I know if won't happen, however imagine (despite all the shit I put on him) Hurley down back with Rance and Josh "Leroy" Jenkins up forward with Riewoldt. That would be nice.

Yes we have been there before, a few times... And yet here we are again.

It's gonna keep happening if nothing changes!!!

Perhaps this is an unpopular opinion, but I still think our best season after 2013 was 2012 despite missing finals (if not the best season under Hardwick).

Our midfield looked great (maybe even among the best in the league). Our forward line kicked over 100 points regularly. Our backline was still suspect, but our biggest loss was 44 points to Carlton in Round 1. The next worst of the losses were a 21-point loss to Collingwood in Round 2 and a 22-point loss to Fremantle in Domain Stadium.

We comfortably beat teams regularly.

Had we have actually closed the games off against Gold Coast (lost by 2), Carlton (lost by 4), North Melbourne (lost by 4) and Port Adelaide (draw), we would have made finals instead of North Melbourne at a record of 14-8 and a percentage better than the one we finished with (111.6%).

I think we could have defeated Geelong that year in the finals. We lost by only 10 points to them at Simonds stadium that year and would be a good chance of beating them at the MCG.

Ah, them days huh
Agree , but the plodders all arrived.

Yer that would be great but you're right it wont happen. We'll re-sign underperforming C graders that have been on the list far too long instead.

The first person that needs to be traded out is Rance.

Thats a no brainer, he is our best player clearly. Rance is our mVP and is keeping us above water. RFC needs to drown and taste that shit so it can revive again like a phoenix. It has to take the fear out of the culture , touch wood and go beyond thunder dome. RFC needs to leave the nanny state behind and grow some ******* balls!!! Once Rance gets traded out reality sets in and people know where we are at and only the brave and strong stick around renewing the leadership team!! Like any quality business on field driven by the will of the people RFC needs to go bankrupt and clean the crap out!!

Rance to GWS for J Kelly throw in Tomlinson..

Then absolutely smash the 2017 draft after doing our best with the 2016 draft and see what happens.

RFC needs to stop acting like soft cocks and start focusing on winning premierships being player focused and taking no ******* short cuts finally!!!!
stopped reading after this.

Why indeed
Shall we see ourselves out ?

I don't pretend to tell you what to do!

I don't play the man, so I will not engage you. In fact, on good faith I will put you on ignore as a tagger.

I have interests in the Melbourne/Hawks match and Blues/Bris match so my current focus is on that

Doing an overnight shift.
Having a look at the list.
We need something. I dunno. Sick of not being good enough, consistently never good enough...

Mock 22 for 2017

B: Dylan Grimes - SOMEONE (Chaplin) - SOMEONE (Batchelor)

HB:
Chris Yarran - Alex Rance - SOMEONE (Houli)

C:
Brett Deledio - Nick Vlastuin - Trent Cotchin

HF:
Ben Lennon - SOMEONE (Vickery) - SOMEONE (Lloyd... still not entirely sold and want Lennon to be the first choice come 2017)

F:
Daniel Rioli - Jack Riewoldt - SOMEONE (......)

R: SOMEONE
- Dustin Martin - Reece Conca

Int:
Anthony Miles - Shane Edwards - Shaun Grigg - Corey Ellis

Then there's Menadue, Markov, McIntosh, Drummond......and maybe Chol and Callum Moore.

Dunno what to do with B. Ellis, Griffiths, Lambert, Morris nor McBean. I don't believe any of them will take us far, but dunno that we can get much for them as trades.

Anyone else I haven't mentioned, I don't have any faith in whatsoever.

So we have some very good players and some good ones, and where I put SOMEONE and then a name in brackets, I still think those players can do well for us in 2017, but would prefer some upgrades if we can.

A lot of people hate Chaplin, but he is easily our next best after Rance.
Astbury isn't good enough. So until we find a genuine player here, we MUST keep Chaplin or we will fall to bits.

I dunno that we will keep Conca, but I really hope we do, is a gun at his best with other good players around him and WILL tackle.

I have filled the whole midfield above... but it's still lacking.... let's be honest... A lot (even Cotchin) could be upgraded. Most of them aren't real strong two-way runners, none of them are the new-style (is it even new?) tall, rangy midfielder.. and they don't often take control of games as a group.
We see flashes of individual brilliance, but they don't hunt together and overwhelm teams, and really never look like they are dominant and in control of matches.
I think Brendon Lade MUST GO as midfield coach... So should the forward coach. And whoever the coach is that teaches us how to set up in defensive stoppages. And whoever coaches us on NOT letting the ball get out the back for easy goals to blokes with no one on them. F**k.

So what do we need?? (how the f*** are ever gonna fix this?!)

- I may have filled the midfield, but we need some more. At least ONE more absolute gun. And one more that is at least the level of Conca or Vlastuin.

- To cover the 'SOMEONEs', we need:
> A new key position defender
> Medium/Small defender
> Rebounding defender who still defends (that said, we may love the pairing of Yarran and Houli next year IF we see it)
> Key position forward who can ruck
> Tall or medium forward
> Gun midfielder
> Ruckman

They are in no particular order but I reckon we could drastically improve for 2017 by adding a gun Ruck, a gun Mid, and drafting a good kid that is ready.

So, Round 1 2017 might look like this:

B: Grimes - Chaplin - Batchelor/McIntosh
HB: Yarran - Rance - Houli
C: Deledio - Vlastuin - Cotchin
HF: Lennon - Vickery - Lloyd/New kid
F: Rioli - Riewoldt - Edwards
R: NEW RUCK - Martin - Conca
Int: NEW MID - Miles - Grigg - C Ellis

emg: Menadue - Drummond - Markov

Is that side gonna be enough?
Hard to say.....

Is Prestia really the one who would make that midfield group elite?
Could Brad Crouch be the one that has enough of what we need and enough point of difference?
Or is there someone else we can throw big money at?
I actually have a feeling Drummond will be best 22 next year.

If we do get those 2 to 4 guns in the next two off-seasons, and draft REALLY well in that the new kids are good enough to step straight in, then we might be okay, as we do have some absolute superstars and a solid core.

I am just worried that we just won't get it together whilst Deledio, Riewoldt, Rance and Edwards are in the side. What a waste, particularly the first 3. Absolute guns.
And then when they retire, we could be really far back again and rebuilding, and then suddenly Cotchin and Dusty are on their last legs and we're even further back...

F**k... The cycle is endless. Sorry for the post becoming so lengthy guys.

I'm doing my own head in. And it tells me that, no matter who you have at the helm, it is a f*****g tough business to be a part of and you need a heap of luck to win premierships, no matter how well you think you are drafting, players turn out to be spuds, peak early and never really go another step, the group doesn't gel, the age dynamic is off, you get injuries.. it goes on and on.

So I guess, all you can do is stick tough. Keep barracking. Hope that we're the next team that happens to be smart (and lucky) enough to click everything into place at the same (and right) time, and.... try to not care TOO much in the meantime.

But one thing's for sure:
> We need good picks. We HAVE to write this season off.
> Try some things.
> Try Vickery as No.1 Ruck.
> Give Markov games now.
> Friggen play McBean.
> At least give Butler a game or two.
> It's midyear, upgrade Chol or Callum Moore (betcha they upgrade Marcon...)

Anyway. Have a good weekend fellas. Don't dwell on it as much as I am, you'll go bloody crazy.
Grimes has to go to injury prone. We need players who can play 20- 22 games a year. Dylan cannot do this time to set him free

Im not sure that the players have stopped playing for him, I think they are playing his game to the letter and sadly thats the problem

I said it in another post on a different thread, for me the players look over coached and any natural thought or isntinct is totally stifled.

Most other teams seem quicker in foot and mind, which makes us look slow and ponderous, predictable and the players dont appear relaxed or comfortable in possession, which leads to displays like tonight re our entries into the forward 50 and our ability to miss very kickable goals.

Add to that the lack of quality in depth we have, our shocking ruck stocks and where we are now, shouldnt really be a surprise.
Imo its the reverse of over coached. Other clubs know where they have to be and when and not just rely on natural skill.

First off the club should come out and say EVERYONE is under review regardless of contracts and Friday nights game was not acceptable by the players or the coaching staff.

Then the coach should come out and say boys don't forget your mouth guards at training as it's clear as mud we can't handle pressure so from now on every training session will be done under extreme pressure so we get used to it by round 1 next year.

Then the coach needs to announce players by name, TV and Ellis your effort is unacceptable regardless of goals or possessions and your in the 2s for 3 weeks until you consistently meet the standards regardless of who we have fit or how it impacts our structure if you show 3 games at that level you can come back for 1 in the AFL and if it remains high you stay week by week, Grigg, Edwards and others are on notice.

Finally we are to play man on man contested footy and play on at all costs, play the corridor, players that go backwards, sideways or pause and hesitate will be playing with TV and Ellis.

New rules new standards, the past is history so anyone in the side lose all previous credits and anyone not currently in the side lose all demerits, back to square one and all positions are up for grabs.

Dimma stop being a pussy and trying to be liked, your not that smart, you either get ruthless or get out, you have half a season to turn the tide.

That's not how the tackle stat works. They were three genuine tackles.

Also I disagree, Titch was pretty good, one of the least of our worries.
Edwards was very ordinary. He sums up our predicament. Most of his touches were junk time. Missed tackles and inability to hit targets. His form mirrors the team. Looks great when we are winning but putrid when the heats on. He's not Robinson Crusoe though.
