having been to a number of st.kilda games and watching all the remaining games with my St.kilda family, i hope you guys dont mind if i make some observations.

-your list has too many single position players. by this i mean guys who can play on a flank and are an in between size, but for various reasons aren't flexible enough to say, be thrown onto the ball or swapped to the other end of the ground. e.g. voss + gilbert even gram among others. goddard was changing to an onballer before the knee injury.

-heavy bodied midfielders, one or 2 more mids to take the clearance load off lenny. wce have kerr, cousins, priddis and stenglein. saints i see have lenny and luke ball on one leg.

-erratic form out of fraser. dont know what you can do about this. collingwood has the same problem with rocca. maybe put in a quick leader from a pocket like tim boyle/sean rusling to take the pressure off.

-midfield depth. this is probably exacerbated by the lack of flexibility but if you could throw gilbert in for 5 minutes a quarter or milney. i dont mean those guys specifically but the person who plays in that position. the fact that you cant means the guys who play in the guts get worn down by the end of a game and season.

this isnt meant to be inflamatory, i see a lot of positives in the saints and have had a soft spot for them driven into me.

Good post. A lot of blame has to go the recruiting department for our serious lack of midfield depth. Bally and Lenny aside, we need serious help as you pointed out. Milney and Gilbert won't cut it there but i think i know who will, Maguire.... Seriously .. :)

In fairness to Lyon, he didn't have time to hone the list over the off-season like a Ratten, Harvey would be able to this year. That's why blokes like Milne survived the cut. Hopefully in the next couple of years Lyon addresses our list deficiencies and we can eventually challenge for the top 4 again.

I think it's fair to say Milne certainly had a better year this year than last. I like how Ross played him more up forward on the flank because I think he is at his best when delivering into the forward line. Having said that he still needs to rid his game of the 'spur of the moment' type decisions that have cost us goals...

Season over though:(

Now that there is nothing to play for (one could say that the pressure is now on Richmond to avoid the wooden spoon... :)), let's hope for a good, fast and high scoring game to finish the season in style.

Still no word from Harvey if he will play again next year - it will be interesting to see his reaction and body language after the game !

Gosh, I hope that he'll play another year (or two) !

(the same applies for Gehrig, too)

I suppose to go from 4-7 at the halfway point to missing the finals on the last weekend showed that once we got things going we weren't too far away from the mark. Potentially we could have stolen a win or two finals as well but there were better teams than us going around and we have to acknowlege that.

I don't really buy into those it was the season we had to have scenarios that some may choose to paint but by the same token it's not as if our so-called premiership window is closed either.
