Teams Seattle Seahawks - The 12th Man

ESPN's Brady Henderson believes it "seems likely" the Seahawks will release mid-season trade acquisition Carlos Dunlap.
It "seems likely" because cutting the soon-to-be 32-year-old would clear $14.037 million in cap space while leaving behind no dead money. Dunlap helped energize the Seahawks' previously woebegone defense following his October arrival, but there is no way they can pay that price in a year where the salary cap is falling. It is quite possible Dunlap is brought back on a more affordable deal.

The Athletic's Michael-Shawn Dugar, Mike Sando and Jayson Jenks report Russell Wilson's camp has broached trade destinations with Seattle to the Dolphins, Jets, Saints and Raiders.
The report also notes that "some people around the league" believe a trade will happen, if not this offseason then sometime in the "near future," and that those close to Wilson feel as though the pillars upon which coach Pete Carroll built his program — namely competition and accountability — are applied selectively, especially as it pertains to himself and his sons. If that truly is the case, Wilson would knowingly waive his no-trade clause to join one of the four teams listed above if only to escape Carroll's reign, which runs through the 2025 season after the organization gifted the 69-year-old an extension late last year. It's still possible this relationship is repaired, but the two sides continue to grow farther apart with every passing day.

Yeah, not quite.

Will be amazed if he's traded considering the teams he named don't have a pick good enough to get a quality young replacement in the draft.

Cowboys tagging and trading Dak probably the only one that makes any sense.

The Athletic's Michael-Shawn Dugar said Will Dissly "may be in position to hold the top spot" on the Seahawks' depth chart in 2021.
It's an unpleasant reminder that Gerald Everett probably didn't become the team's primary pass catching tight end when he signed with Seattle last week. Dugar said Everett, who reunites with former Rams coach and new Seattle offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, "would at worst be the No. 2 tight end behind Dissly to start the season." Waldron praised Everett's pass catching in an interview shortly after Everett signed with the Hawks. "He's got aggressive hands, and he can seem to always find a way to get open versus tight man-to-man coverage," Waldron said, calling Everett's after-the-catch ability "a big asset" to Seattle's offense. Dissly in 2019 emerged as the team's No. 1 tight end, catching 23 of 27 targets for 263 yards and four touchdowns before tearing his Achilles in Week 6. Everett seems unlikely to have the pass-catching role all to himself in 2021.

Seahawks declined RB Rashaad Penny's fifth-year team option for 2022.
Widely first guessed as a 2018 first-round pick, Penny flashed some big-play juice in 2018-19 before suffering a devastating knee injury. He was active for only three games in 2020 and is already 25 years old. Just 17 of Penny's 178 career touches are receptions. He will get one last chance at establishing himself as a dynamic change-of-pace back in 2021 before reaching free agency.

What a first round flop he's been up until now, RBs in the first round should be safe as houses to give a team some form of production.

Seahawks placed WR D'Wayne Eskridge (toe) on the active/PUP list.
Running back Travis Homer joins him on the PUP list. Both players can be taken off the list once given medical clearance. Eskridge initially suffered the injury in rookie camp and Pete Carroll noted that it was unfortunate that Eskridge was missing time to adjust to a new offense. If Eskridge remains sidelined, Freddie Swain will be the next man up to fill Seattle's third receiver role. Swain posted a 13-159-2 line as a rookie in 2020.

Chris Carson: Seattle offense will be balanced, fast paced, unpredictable

Posted by Mike Florio on July 29, 2021, 12:39 PM EDT

The Seattle Seahawks have a new offense. A running back who has been there for the most recent offense approves of what he has seen, so far.
“I think [offensive coordinator] Shane [Waldron] does a great job keeping everything balanced,” Carson told reporters on Thursday. “We aren’t just relying on the run, and we are mixing up different schemes. We are making everything kind of look the same between a run play and a pass play. The defense can’t tell the difference, so I think he is doing a great job with that. Everything is fast paced and it’s a more explosive offense.”

Carson opted not to use the word “predictable” to describe last year’s offense, but his description of last year’s offense suggests that he thinks it was unpredictable.

“I wouldn’t say we got predictable, I would say it was more like the same stuff that we have been doing throughout the whole season,” Carson said. “It wasn’t anything that was different, and defenses caught onto that towards the end of the season. I think Shane has done a good job of changing everything up and making it different. He’s made everything kind of mirror each other so like run plays connect with the pass play. Everything looks the same.”

Keeping the defense from diagnosing the key question of run or pass before the snap is critical the success of an offense. Having running backs who can run and catch helps, too. Carson likes that part of it.

“The versatility that the running backs can be in, there’s a lot more stuff out wide for the running backs to be involved in,” Carson said. “It’s not as complex as last year’s offense, it’s simpler but more fast paced which I kind of like.”

Carson sees opportunities in the passing game both when lined up as a receiver and when coming out of the backfield.

“I think there’s more opportunities for us to get the ball out wide,” Carson said. “I think there’s going to be a lot more opportunities out there. Even in the pass game in the backfield, there’s just a lot more code words, a lot more different schemes and different formations that allows a running back to get the ball out the backfield. It’s going to be interesting.”

Interesting is good. Successful will be even better. Successful will be critical to avoid another offseason of speculation that quarterback Russell Wilson may be looking for a new team.

Rashaad Penny has slimmed down from approximately 230 pounds to 223 and feels "way faster" in Seahawks camp.
You could say Penny is in the best shape of his life. “He looks great," coach Pete Carroll said. "He worked out here all throughout the offseason, and it really paid off. Best he’s looked since we’ve seen him.” If nothing else, it's great news since it means Penny is already recovered from the clean-up knee operation he underwent in June. Still only 25, Penny has never lacked the talent to be an intriguing lightning to Chris Carson's thunder. If he can finally stay healthy, change-of-pace re-draft value awaits.
