Opinion Second half fadeouts: Problem or Ploy?

Whats the point of thrashing teams off a 6 day break! Increase the chance of injury and less energy next week.

I quite like the idea of stepping off the pedal. You could tell by the players moving position and slowing the game down it was deliberate action.

If the dogs did what we did they would have won against the saints.

Clearly a ploy but we are not executing it well yet. The few times we have gone into "fade mode" we have opportunities to convert goals and stop momentum except we have butchered the ball and missed shots.

I've got no problem using it at all. It's really smart and should put us in good stead for the finals BUT we need to remain sharp and execute the basics while doing it.

Correct. Pav misses a gimme, Danyle shanks one on the run, Sonny kicks iver Pav's head when Pav is 10 meters in the clear. Execute a touch better and we kick 2-3 goals at the end

After the game against Norf we have a pretty easy run of home games for the rest of the season.. Hard to see us even drop one really, might be in for some pretty boring fourth quarters at Subiaco if they decide to continue with the tactic.

If that means we go 11-0 at home or 12-0 including the away derby, I am more than happy to take 1 qtr of boring footy after watching some bloody average footy for 15 years at home. It's all about top 2 and keeping players fresh for the season.

After 5 years of injury decimation this strategy doesnt surprise me. Do we really want to be 2 games to finals with half our squad compromised and the other half playing through the pain barrier?

Touch wood.. Im not used to us finishing games without 2-3 guys going down at a time. I like this strategy.

Probably a Ploy, given the lead.. I don't think we are executing it though.. It looked like half the team had "the rubber legs" in the end.

I wonder if Part B of the PLOY plan will involve Crowley, if he gets back.

Part B = Crowley = the Sub. The STOPPER. Maybe he can come on fresh in the 4th and stop one of the guns that are getting a run on??? I don't think Clancy or Matt D. are as good at the 100% tagger/stopper role as Crowley is.. And Maybe only 1 quarter is required with the other 3 for attack..

It's happening to often in a calculated manner to be a problem. IS it something the team can 100% control - not sure?

We can all see how it could backfire.. but it hasn't - and that's against the best opponents. On the other hand we also put our foot down on the Demons throats last week as well.

Ross could be the first senior coach to troll the league in history through strategy.

We didn't do it last week against the Dees so I wonder if part of the ploy is to keep steamrolling the lesser teams but back off late in the game against sides that will take more out of us physically. It's somewhat dangerous in any case, if it is deliberate, as it's a way of conditioning the team that might backfire during finals. I hope that once or twice during the lead up to september, we go balls out against another finals aspirant just to shake off any complacency.

If you watch Lyon's press conference from last night, in response to a question about whether the fade out was about saving energy he was quoted as saying "we were in a position to takes some liberties and we took them" in regards to rotating some players but that it left us with some structural issues.

Disrespectful to your opposition, and arrogant as ****.

I guess you are allowed to be when you're as good as Lyon is though.
Who gives a f about the opposition? I don't, Freo don't, want respect, challenge us, then they'll play four quarters.of football. Only Port have come close this season.
It's pretty clear they have their minds absolutely set on making it all the way this year, and they don't give two shits about what anyone thinks on how they get there. A season is a marathon, and they are pacing themselves brilliantly. Freo have suffered no major injuries, so somehow the player management strategy they are implementing is working perfectly to this point.

The last thing Freo want is a repeat of last year, playing catch up all season, and running out of gas come finals time.

If they go on and lock in top 2, they should almost be certainties for a grand final. From there it's Ross needs to just take that one extra step.

Sandilands and Fyfe are being saved by playing forward. Still Clarke should be doing better in the ruck, and the secondary midfield can't complete with others teams primary midfield atm.

Definitely a ploy. Go 110% first half, get an un reachable lead then coast.
I would love to know what our percentage is at, after the first 2 qtrs, of each game played so far

Actually don't think it can be classed as disrespectful, letting other sides get a few junk time goals rather than grinding them into the dirt lets the opposition keep a little bit of self respect

I actually agree with you. But then, we kept getting reminded earlier on that many of our best players are over 30.
If its a calculated risk so that those players don't overextend themselves early in the season, I'll take it. I'll like to have Pav, Sandiland, McPharlin, Johnson fit and available come September/October.
I'll even accept that there will be one game later on that we'll end up losing taking the foot off the pedal after a 40-50 points lead. I'm just hoping its not against your mob. It'll probably be St Kilda, again.

Yes and no i think. Switching off at any point and toying with or allowing even 50% effort is immensely disrespectful to th opposition as it cheapens anything they do well in that time and doesn't allow other coaches an accurate read of how we play.

But at the same time, considering the motivation behind it with mental scarring of Murphys Law working it's cruel magic in your last 3 seasons when all has looked well, it's easy to see why one would do it. In a myopic and glass half full kind of way it's actually a bit respectful to your next opponent and others you haven't faced yet

We all know that RTB saves his best footy for the second half of the season. We should be stoked that we're playing good enough footy to be winning and be undefeated so far. We are winning and there's plenty of room for improvement eg: playing four quarters, getting more out of Walters and Ballantyne etc. I'm not concerned at all.

Of course it's a ploy. And it's also no wonder our midfield's not as strong as others when you take Sandi, Mundy & Fyfe out of it. Taking Tabs off isn't great, but keeping Pav on means we've got a good structure ready for if we start to get overrun. I noticed last night after the bombers got a couple of easy goals in the 4th, we put Fyfe back in mid for a bit just to calm them down.
So I'm not too concerned about getting overrun in the 4th of any game, cos we can just as easily throw everyone back into their normal positions (minus the sub)

They were knackered by the mid point of the last quarter; completely spent. I think we did pull back but they were so poor we were almost walking it in between the big sticks anyway.

As stress-inducing as it's been, we're hardly flying solo.

Hawthorn (albeit without a fair chuck of their A-team) barely got out of second gear and were mugged as a result, Port and Sydney have been lacklustre for long stretches. Certainly rather the footy we're playing.
