Seen but not Hird

In lieu of training at Freo yesterday they had a truck trundling around the oval spraying a chemical on the grass. Growth hormone?

The court decision with Hird's contemptuous appeal was inevitable. What is more surprising is that Hird is in the USA.

Wouldn't you be there for the decision? Shows a complete lack of respect from Hird. And irrespective of the court case, why the hell isn't he at training in the middle of the pre-season?

I'll still be surprised if players are suspended for any significant length of time, if at all.

The surface looked fantastic yesterday. Freshly mown, watered, no players to spoil the ambience. Groundsman's delight.

There is a coaching conference on until tomorrow too, in Melbourne.

Makes me wonder if the result is known already, they won't be training anybody playing in the 2015 season.

Being reported by a couple of posters (one Essendon and another formerly supporting them) now that a dons player (current or former) has rolled over and confessed... also that records from Essendon financial system confirm delivery and probably payment.

So I'd say we can expect to see Fremantle dismantle the Essendon 'Z' team on May 9th.

Pity we only play them once this year.

Yes. But technically, Hird have already been punished. Can't really punish him twice can they? ;)
That was purely the governance issue of not knowing and recording what was put into their players.

I am hoping the AFL sanctions for doping are more than a first round ban and finals exclusion.

If they have records which show it was a systematic club-endorsed attempt to cheat the system, the club itself could be banned and then they wouldn't be able to field a team of any sort.

Yep, and it means the players lied or withheld information at the interviews. Which means they breached their contract with the AFL. AFL would be able to sack them without any repercussions.

I have a feeling a bunch of teams are going to get a free 4 premiership points more than us with a ton of percentage and the afl won't try to find a fairer solution. Better not come back to bite us at the end of the year. Drafting in some vfl players is a joke they might aswell not bother fielding a side for all the difference it will make. I wonder what they are paying for the spoon..

It's not going to happen but I'd love to see all those players basically stripped of their ability to play. Some of them, and I don't believe all, but some are drinking the Kool Aid for Hird and threatening to boycott the pre-season games. Pssh. It's nothing but it takes some serious gall to cheat, not be found 'not guilty' and then carry on like they've been poorly treated. It would end some careers (guys who are 27 and average, 50/50 calls) which is probably why so many Bombers players are shit scarred of it happening. I wouldn't mind them being paid their existing contracts because that's fair on the players but I would love to see them play VFL.

Not just VFL, but for their VFL side to play for 0 points all season, too.

They've got some decent young players capable of coming up and doing alright (Gleeson is a gun; he and Kayne Turner are probably my two favourite under-15-game players) and guys like Goddard (as much as I hate him – petulant, entitled, a bit of a dog to the Saints) and Chappy (who I love) would be interesting to see carry a team.

They should be allowed to draft as many players as they want in the PSD/National/Rookie from their 2013 picks. I'm sure they could pick up some certified spuds/recent delistees to flesh out the list and look a bit like GWS do in their older brigade. I would not oppose a loan system either – give guys like Ballard a run.

I'm sure there is a way to negate/even out points for teams who have Essendon twice this season. I'm not sure how, but you can't give the competing team 4 points or 0 either... maybe 2 is fair?

I worked for the ACC for years.... and the word I get from people still there is they're expecting life bans for the support staff involved. That indicates trafficking charges.

Surely the penalty will be to play for no points all season. Similar to the Storm? You can't give teams 4 bonus premiership points. Another option is to re schedule the season, but I can't see this happening.

If the games are for nothing then the teams only playing them once are advantaged by four extra points on the table, if the games count but the players are ringins from lower levels with two weeks to get a game plan together then the teams that play them twice get an advantage.

The AFL has to choose whether the scheduled games being played is worth the fallout from the networks if ratings are down compared to the cost of reimbursing the networks for the missing "bye" games.

If we lose players to injury or retirement in the pre season, we don't get the option to replace them. I think it's unfair for the AFL to hypothetically gift the Bombers extra draft picks, or concessions after the drafting period!

What if they were only allowed to pick those who nominated for the draft last year?
It would be building their list from late rookie picks.
