Merv gets no respect; bowled himself into the ground, strike rate and average equal to that of McDermott's, carried the attack for a while there.
Big Bruce Reid made it look effortless, the lanky left-armer was all class.

Chris Rogers lucky.

No room for Siddle in an all Victorian Test Team? Max Walker would go close as well if you're discussing the 75-15 period.

.. disappointed you couldn't find room for the feared WA pace combo of Jo Angel and Chris Matthews.
seriously, those two really stunk up their test careers after dominating at shield level consistently for a long time ..

Thomson and Border are from Sydney
Chappell is from Adelaide
Wessels is South African

They all played lots for Queensland though. Also is not Watson originally from Tasmania ?
Also Wessels played for Australia.
Remember his Test debut. 162 from memory.

Watson is from Ipswich.

I picked all my teams based on SOO

No, Watson just moved down there. Played a decent amount for them, though.

I'm sure that Border/Thomson perceive themselves as QLD'ers.

NSW would obviously be favourites, but that WA team is very strong. I don't know how to feel about Queensland - they bat deep, but aren't very potent; they have four quality pace bowlers, but all would miss the best Australian teams, if only by a sliver. Pistol would get a gig ahead of all of the other pace bowlers in that Victorian team, and it's the bowling tha saves that team too. South Australia is a reminder of how far they've fallen and how long they've been down. Tasmania reflects its population.

Maher has to be in the Qld side.

Never played Test cricket.

You are being way to kind to him. He lost us that Test. He was last recognized batsmen in with tailenders. He should have got us home. Other batsmen got us in trouble but there comes a time it is your turn to say, if it is to be, it is up to me. He failed that Test at a time his team and own career needed him to stand up. It is why he was out of team for so long. As I said kudos to him for turning his career around years later but before we got to number one he was not helping us become number one. That is the truth.
The other posts addressed a lot of my feelings, but I would also point out that Martyn was the rookie of the team. All the experienced batsmen failed too, but given they had tenure, it was just easier to drop Martyn. It was about making a statement and Marto was the scapegoat. Given the obvious talent he had and the fact that he had been identified for his skills early, it was a mistake to make him the fall guy for the whole team's failures; we lost quite a few years after that, during which he could have been something special.

Never understood the level of love that Mark Waugh gets. No doubt, a very, very good batsman. And he played some amazing innings in his time. But an average of 42, and a high score of 153* tells the story. He was responsible for some of the softest dismissals you'll ever see. Such a frustrating player.

IMHO, I rate Martyn ahead of him... but I wouldn't put either in my XI.

Hayden
Warner
Ponting
Chappell, G
Border
Waugh, S
Gilchrist
Johnson
Warne
Lillee
McGrath

Not convinced about Johnson... I personally think that Reid and Harris were better bowlers. But since both of them were cruelled by injuries, it's hard to select them against a guy with more than 300 wickets. I reckon Clarke and Hussey are both pretty unlucky... but a middle order of Ponting, Chappell, Border and Waugh is pretty difficult to dispute -- these guys are all legends of Australian cricket.

I agree 100%. Waugh played some good innings but i would have Marto ahead of him comfortably.

Martyn being overrated a bit here. Fleming worked him out. Beautiful player but had some big weaknesses IMO.

Martyn had some nice stroke play but mentally not in these players company. Road the good times at end when Australia had already made number one. Good luck to him. Enjoyed his last couple of years to see him make something of his career. He is not in Mark Waugh company except in the stats arena. Stats do not show you everything but if they are the way you judge your players good luck to you. Some of us can just watch and work it out with our own eyes.

Given the biggest knock on M.Waugh was also mental, demonstrated by his failure to go on and make big scores, I'm not quite sure why it's not a fair comparison.

Martyn was just beautiful to watch. Style over substance, though.

His knock vs South Africa when recalled for Hodge goes underrated.
