Roast Selection Blunders

If the current match committee all got a good case of gastro before the next few games' selection times and they had to bring in new people to do the selecting, I would be really, really, really okay with that.

I say lets let Big footy pick the side this week :thumbsu: i'll make the call to Woosh

As soon as we were knocked out last year in the finals he said we needed speed in the team and we went and got Cripps and Wellingham. I don't think Woosh is ignorant of the deficiencies in our team and of most of the players on the list, but I hardly expect him to spill it to the media, it's just not how he works.

We didn't go and target those to two anyway, both players wanted out and nominated west coast.
West coast never goes after anybody these day.
Bit of an issue in itself, we should be targeting A grade mids, because our current crop sucks.

The club has hedged all their bets on the current crop of young mids and they just haven't turned out to be all we expected, yet. I still think there is still plenty of improvement to be had. Lets hope we can supplement players like Shuey, Gaff and Masten with some exciting young kids then I think we will be on the right track to win one in a few years (Wellers should be our General, not Ploddus). I excluded Selwood because I think he will turn out to be a Crowley type for us, a lock down player, allowing the others to tear teams apart.

I would say that it rarely happens that a player says "I want out" and selects a club without there having been prior conversations with that club. As to who initiated the conversation between the club and Cripps/Wellingham, I doubt we'll really ever find out.

The club may well have targeted other players too, but if the player didn't want out, why would the offer be made public?

That's a good point. Certainly plausible

GC and GWS entering have hurt us, we ended up with the players we have, due to being the best of what is left in the draft the last few years.

Which A grade mids could we have got from other clubs ?

What did we have to offer other teams in return, not a lot. Clubs are a lot smarter with trades now, you won't get a gold nugget for a polished turd.

One example would be if it wasn't for GC we would have directly gotten H.Bennell instead of Gaff.

Ignoring the fact that Swallow was rated as one of the best juniors in ages and seemed ready made... top 3 in the VFL b&f when he was 17.

Fair call. I haven't really kept track of GC this year.. I know Swallow has been injured for parts of the year, but otherwise how has he been tracking?

Bennell looks to have far greater potential of the two. Swallow, when not injured has been playing of the hbf a bit this year I think. He's been playing his role, but there are a few that are ahead of him in terms of getting time on ball (Bennell, Gazz, O'Meara, and Prestia at the very least). Others will be better informed than me though, but I'd say he hasn't come on as thought so far. That's probably more a reflection of pre draft hype though.

Chance for a trade in a year or two?
