When would reputations ever mean nothing when selecting?

You can’t change a lot of players week to week unless you have injuries and you certainly don’t change the tall/small/run structure of the team unless forced by injury and/or form.

A gun will get more chances to return to form over a rookie due to their ceiling, it’s how it always is and you need to get the guns firing to win flags.

Amiss, Switta or Darcy aren’t in the best form atm but not many are banging down the door that “selection integrity” is at risk. Darcy probably closest but giving a Doig medalist one more game over a new recruit when we just won by 8 goals isn’t a huge leap.

Darcy hasn’t been good for 18 months. I know he has had his injuries but that is precisely why fitness should factor into selection

Here are some questions related to team selection this year.

• Does Darcy stay in the team (if not performing)?
• Does Amiss stay in the team (if not performing)?
• Does JOM come straight back into the team? (At the expense of someone performing)?
• Does Freddy come straight back into the team (at the expense of someone performing)?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes then we are not a ruthless enough footy team.

We are all chips in at this point.

Reputations should mean nothing. Draft order should mean nothing. Contracts should mean nothing and even experience (to a lesser extent) should mean nothing. If JL and the decision makers at Freo have any integrity they should make decisions based on 2 metrics.

2 Fitness.

The uncomfortable truth is Sonny and Fyfe should not have been automatic selections in 24/25 (like they were) and we need to be ruthless if we want to achieve something that has never happened in the history of our club.

I’m still not convinced JL is bold enough to make the unpopular calls at this point.

I would be absolutely devasted if Scerri was dropped.

He plays exactly the role we need. If he can keep up that form, then he should not be dropped for anyone.

If Frederick, Young, JOM, Sturt were all available this week, Scerri would hold his spot in my opinion and other people would be dropped or they would play WAFL.

1st test failed IMO. O’Driscoll has been very good with his defensive chase on the wing. JOM is no world beater, and to drop NOD to bring back JOM off a 4 week hammy with no games at Peel fails the integrity test IMO.

You can make the case that NOD is unlucky to be dropped but I think it is a stretch to argue that it is a failure of integrity. NOD has not made himself unstoppable by any means.

Good thread. There’s been none of it this year so far. 0/3 for the 3 weeks so far.

Already cost ourselves 4 points at the selection table and we’ve played 2 games.

Straight up shooting ourselves in the foot picking favourites and underdone players over those in form and performing.

I’m of the opinion that we are playing better without Freddy
NOD is a smarter footballer and does a lot more 1% stuff , his disposal lets him down at times though

It's amazing what being a below average public speaker can do to your public perception. Sam Mitchell is a genius who has outperformed Freo slightly during his tenure, everything that goes right is on him, everything that goes wrong is because they are missing Will Day.

JL stutters a few times and he's a conservative idiot who won't take us to the promised land. Despite the fact that he's had to contend with more struggles than any other club (opening round oppo 3 times in a row, most travel in the comp, media having a hate boner for him, etc.) Even when we win it's because of everyone but him.

I thought our slow starts were because he and Pearce are boring people. Does that mean the fix has been that they've got some new hobbies? I'm not sure but I haven't heard anyone mention that.

I enjoy a back and forth discussion about the merits of the players/coach and the team but the constant desire to shit on JL for literally everything is an unfortunate stain on what can be a pretty interesting board.

I've never heard the 'boring people' take. I've heard the 'we need more mongrel in leadership' take - from me and others.

It's impossible to prove, there are too many variables, but maybe the likes of Treacy/Serong/Voss are contributing more to the leadership this year and that helps team focus/aggression and therefore better starts.

It could also be that we have over-corrected to avoid the dreaded slow start and are burning too much fuel in Q1 and then we don't have enough in the tank to sustain through to Q4. Leadership/experience will fix this.

I love footy, Freo, and talking about footy and Freo, like everyone else here.

I advocate certain things to ensure the board functions as it is supposed to, as a place for dialogue and discussion, because I care. And I'm not afraid to have conflict with people who take the board in other directions. Of course you can argue I am wrong, that's your prerogative, but you have to simply ask yourself the question what should the board look like and what rules should govern the board?

We can all agree that unmoderated boards are junk.

I've been on this board for close to 20 years, so I have some experience with its ups and downs. Many of us are 80s kids too.

Some simple stuff:

• don't repetitively whinge about the same stuff
• don't post new threads to air a personal grievance where a topical thread already exists
• respect fellow posters

Etc. And yes I go directly at people sometimes, but usually it's because they're breaking one of the first two items above.

This thread combines both of the above. A thread that is not needed and needlessly whinging about some fictitious self driven standard. Who decides what selection integrity is? What a joke of a concept that posters can decide what that is. We have access to a pittance of the inside information that goes into selection. People are naive to think they know better from the outside. Club coaches are just as passionate and competitive as we are.

Question selection 100% but for **** sake stop whinging when the club selects the player that you think is ranked 23rd over the player that's ranked 22nd. The differences between JOM and NOD are miniscule and everyone knows why JOM is preferred, it's because NOD has below AFL level kicking and has no right foot.

We aim not to be gatekeeper for people's opinions, but we will step in if multiple threads are being used to push the same view otherwise it becomes repetitive.

Advocate away, but attacking other posters is usually a pretty ineffective way to 'moderate', it doesn't change people's minds or change behaviours.


We've made it known that if this thread continues to just devolve into complaining about the latest selections we'll point people to the relevant thread and close this one.
There was some reasonable discussion on broader themes, and what people think selection integrity means, if it continues along those lines great, if not we move on.
