Among the many joys of being a passionate footy fanatic is the weekly ritual of ‘Selection Night’.
You know what I mean.
You have already dissected last weeks’ game with fellow Catters, lauded the many highlights and you may even have cast a silent thought into the not too distant future.
You have all but gloated with any of your mates that are unfortunate enough to barrack for some other team.
Last week’s game is now done and dusted.
Talk of who could be dropped out of the team has been bandied about all week, but it’s about to stop.
It will be replaced by talk about the actual changes.
Now for the good part.
We know better than the selectors!
We pontificate over their decisions.
We state with authority where they have got it right or wrong.
We sometimes wonder how in hell they chopped one of our favourites from the team. Are they stupid or what?
And how could they possibly justify bringing in some hack from the twos that we just don’t rate?
I mean, we have watched the game. The replays too.
We’ve listened to all the sport shows and read every newspaper article that is even remotely connected to Catland. Toss in the time we have spent online and any “whispers” we may have picked up over the past week and it becomes painfully obvious that we are far better credentialed to make team selections than the boffins down at the Club.
I personally have been waiting for the telephone to ring but, you know Bomber, he’s a stubborn bugger.
Speaking of Bomber, there are many wise fans who are capable of identifying every misdemeanor he makes, but that’s another story.
If you go through the BigFooty Boards you will find very little praise for the selectors at any of the clubs.
In a rare moment of deference I have decided to salute the current Geelong selection panel for the job they have done thus far in 2007. I know that they have had a healthy playing list to date but wins speak louder than losses and their score is on the board.
May their good form continue.
Perhaps they have been reading BigFooty and accessing our ideas !!!
