Our midfield just now has to smash them. If we can win more inside 50's then it won't matter too much missing Egan.

Agreed - you'll have to make sure the guys are prepared to handball to Gaz just to make sure he doesn't have any little tantrums and stays focused.

WTF are you on about?

As for selection, Varcoe must go. I can't stress this enough, I'm starting to get annoyed at how he is staying in the team despite being a complete passenger. With Egan out I think it should be

Outs: Varcoe, Egan,
In: Bartel, D.Johnson

Is Rooke ready to play AFL again? If he plays then Byrnes obviously goes out. But given last weekends performance in the VFL I am not sure. DJ should come in. WHY THE HELL WAS HE DROPPED ANYWAY? Kangaroos play contested footy, just another reason to drop Varcoe and bring in DJ who is tight, accountable and loves the hard stuff.

Nablett was mediocre again on the weekend, which begs the question, do we think outside the square and play the Tommahawk. I'm half tempted, but no. Conservative approach, stick to what you know and what had worked, if it doesn't work this week Hawkins may get a chance.

Confident about this game, even with the loss of Egan. If Egan is out for the season though we are in trouble. Nervous times.

You may be onto something there Cheshire.

Possible...

Out: Egan, Varcoe, Byrnes
In: Bartel, Rooke, DJ

If Harley moves to CHB, then that means we could bring in DJ for the vacant small defender, then insert Rooke and Bartel into the midfield/forward rotation in place of Byrnes and Varcoe.

Thoughts?

Well the Egan scans have put to rest the too many defensive options argument. Very unfortunate, but it is early stages and we really don't know if we'll see him again or not this year. I don't think they'll risk Egan with painkilling this week so he's obviously out. But you know what, our team has covered guys absences amazingly well this year and when one door closes for one, it opens for another. I do like the D. Johnson idea, as well as Rooke. But don't know which one I rather or how we'll cover Egan so i'm going to stop trying. I'm going to sit back and just let the coaching staff do what they do best.

I, also. Would love to see Hawkins there this weekend, but am too, weary of messing with a settled team.

The problem is that the Roos have a very tall forward line and having DJ play may not be the best option. Egans loss is a real blow to our structure.

I've got no idea how they're going to go now. Bartel will come back, Rooke maybe. Egan looks like being out, and Varcoe has to be dropped. Really wondering if they'll bring in Hawkins. He looked a million bucks yesterday, albeit at a lower level. North haven't got a plethora of tall defenders themselves, and as we've said they may have to reshuffle Brown or someone to the backline. Be interesting.

Out: Egan (inj), Varcoe
In: Rooke, Bartel

As much as I don't want Byrnes in there, I just think Byrnes showed a bit more than Varcoe Sat night (he even kicked 2 goals from set shots - amazing)!
Backline to all step up in Egans absence as there simply isn't any quality replacements ie. Playfair showed he wasnt up to it, S.Hunt not, Lonergan looked the most impressive yesterday but they won't take that type of risk I reckon! Hawkins looked good but he doesn't solve any backline problems as can't afford to move Mooney to backline. And Nablett is safe for time being. King looked good but Blake was very good for once Sat night so no change there now.

in rooke bartel king
out egan byrnes varcoe

An extra tall in king may be useful now that matty is out!

So is Egan def out?

If so:
OUT: Egan, Varcoe, Byrnes
IN: Rooke, Bartel, Hawkins/?

Dasha can play tall. Not sure what the weather will be like, but if its wet, their tall forward line will mean two thirds of **** all.

That's the other option as I see it. Bring in Hawkins, have three talls up forward, which means that they will need to stack up down back by taking one or two talls away from their attack.
Or they may take the shootout option and keep their talls up forward and allow us to play ours up forward. If it gets to a shootout, I'm confident our boys will kick more than them.

I'm coming more and more around to the need for King to be in now that Egan is out. It provides us with greater flexibility depending on how the game is panning out. With Blake in, he can really only fill one role, where King has the multi-facets to his game which could provide helpful.
e.g. if the Kangas tall forwards are really proving too much to handle, King floating into the hole is a better option than relying on Blakey to do it imo.

I would rather Blake than King at the moment. Once again King dominated the VFL, but AFL is a step up and he showed a while ago that he cannot step up. Finals footy is another step up from that.

Plus even Charlie Gardiner looks good in the VFL.

Cat in Sydney - what's in that little red pipe you been smokin?? You sure are saying some funny things.

What's wrong with what I've said?

None of these are the preferred option, however, with Egan out, our well balanced backline is now needing to restructure, and I think that King knowing when to drop into the backline hole to prevent opposition forwards marking may well be more beneficial than Blakes slightly better tap work.

That's all. It's not the most stupid post I've ever made! :p

with the likes of Mackie, Milburn, Harley, Scarlett and Rooke who are all only 4 or 5 centimeteres shorter than most of the Roos forwards we should have the quality and quantity to help each other out and make sure none of their talls kick any big bags

In- Bartel, Rooke
Out- Varcoe, Egan inj

Emerg D Johnson, King, Hawkins/Gardiner.
The thing is i we get another tall defender inj who would come up??????

Is Egan definetly out?

If so:
In:King, Bartel, Rooke, DJ
Out:Blake, Egan, Varcoe, Byrnes (unfortunately, ill get nailed for this but i reckon he played well on saturday and doesnt deserve to be dropped)
