Selfishness starting to appear?

I was thinking about this last night/this morning, even Toovey I'd say would be getting paid unders. With what's been reported on Macaffer and Davis you get the feeling his initial contract offer would have been less than what he was on for 2011 in which case you can understand his manager doing something about it (although poorly). I know he's going to get poor press about it but I don't think anyone at the club would be getting paid more than their worth.

Perhaps the club didnt think Davis would have such a good year and the forward planning only budgeted for x amount. Not to mention the increase in salaries for Pendles, Swan, Daisy etc to ward off GWS.

I think a lot of that is right, except perhaps the club thinking he wouldn't have a good year...on last year you'd likely expect he would.

I think in the other thread Bay Pie probably nailed it.

Leon goes back home post season, great climate, surrounded by family and loved ones...then he gets an offer sent through by his manager and it doesn't seem enough to lure him back to Melbourne, leaving the comfort of home behind.

Has a grumble about it to his mate BT, leaks out, that's about where we're at.
He's possibly holding out, waiting if the club makes a better offer, they probably can't bc of salary cap...stalemate.

To be honest with the recruitment of Andrew Krakouer Leons position in the forward line was in jeopardy especially after being dropped for G.F 2.

I dont think many expected him to have such a good year in 2011 playing in the backline and early in the year there were doubts. By late in the year he was a key player running off half back, especially so with Heath Shaws brain fade later in the year.

Hey all this talk about salary cap issues,i just thought gee didn't we turn over 11 players last year some of which were experienced players which would have freed up our salary cap a bit.

Funny that we have got salary cap pressures now?

Even with renewals for Pendles, swan thomas and Dawes all these guys took less than they could in order for the core group to stay together.

Unless we have Cloke, reid, sidey and pendles to re sign next year, but still i reckon these guys may take a little dip to keep the team together don't you reckon ?

What about Swan, Dawes and Cloke who have taken under market value.

Geelong still lost Ablett (unfair example given Geelong or any other team besides GC could offer that much), Mumford, Laidler and Prismall.

They are on normal market value, not new teams entering market value which increased all those players pay significantly for them to stay.

The entering of GC and GWS has screwed the player values at our club and others.

Quite right, market values in 2007-2009 and in 2001 when Geelong and Essendon had cap issues is a lot different to now with the GC and GWS cashed up ready to raid.

What would have kept top players at a club 3 years ago is now about 400-500k less than what they could get at GC or GWS. This means it takes an extra 200k to keep them than it did for the Cats to keep their older players who the franchises probably didn't want as much.

What if Beams/sidebottom for example have a breakout year and kick 50 goals and become another star midfielder. There's absolutely no room to move in paying any current players any more than they're currently getting (Tooves, Davis AA for example). Win a flag and their asking price aint going to go down. If Pendles wins the Brownlow, how high does his price go??

It's unfortunate all of Collingwood's stars are blossoming just as GWS and GC have the cash to splash. Had those two teams started 4 years ago, Geelong would be having similar trouble.

It's selfish to expect a player with a young family to accept significantly less than market value whilst working in a high risk industry.

It's selfish to expect a player to live on the other side of the country when the bulk of their family is over 1,000 ks away for 12 years.

It's wonderful for players like Swan, Dawes et el to accept less than the market rate but NOT selfish for a player to want to set their young family up for life or to want to be with your family over the other side of the continent after 12 years.

Just a little bit of perspective here - put yourself in their positions.

If your boss come to you and offered to keep you on for the next 5 years but only if you signed a wages deal that was 20% less than the market rate and CAPPED at that for the 2 years would any of you accept it if you thought you could get a better offer, especially since you have a monster mortgage, 2 cars and 3 kids in private schools?

I'll bet my left marble you wouldn't.

Same goes for family - what would your reaction be if your boss told you to shift interstate away from your family for 12 years?

Would you be happy?

I bet you wouldn't.[/quote

I would accept if my wages were 350k. and i was asked to accept a 20% less for the next 2 - 5 years. It's not the same saying to some one on 60 - 70k as to someone who is on 350k.

Everythings relative yaz.

Everythings relative yaz.
Correct, everything is relative to the individual concerned.
What one person sees as fair another person might see as unfair.

That is why no one can really offer a valid view of Leon other than himself, everything else is uninformed speculation, or what most posters self righteously say "hey I'm just expressing my opinion man".
As someone else said "walk a mile in my shoes"
