I'm not going to pretend that I'm not a Westhoff fan, but wow, you're wrong. How's Boak going by the way?
...
It's Mr CT Sellar Boak to you sir.

Hahah I love that shit. At least there is a record kept on here of drunken behaviour. Sometimes I wish real life was similar.
Well get married then and you'll soon have your wish. :)

Full-forward for bright new star

COLLINGWOOD'S eighth debutant this season is also the youngest player on any AFL list. Ben Reid, 18, will turn out for the Magpies on Sunday in front of a full house at Telstra Dome in the all-Victorian match of the round against Hawthorn.

Picked up at No. 8 with the club's first-round selection in last year's national draft, the teenager from Bright is the son of Bruce Reid, who played 119 games with Footscray and Carlton between 1977 and 1985.

The suspension of Anthony Rocca this week opened the door for Reid — the 196-centimetre left-footer having kicked eight goals in his past three games with Williamstown — along the way convincing selectors to start him at full-forward in his first game in black and white.

"Ben Reid will play full-forward. He'll be named full-forward and he'll play full-forward," coach Mick Malthouse said yesterday, barely concealing his excitement.

Several times this year Malthouse has commented that players on the sidelines are no good to him.

Wearing the No. 20 guernsey, Reid will join fellow Magpie debutants Martin Clarke, Shannon Cox, Brad Dick, Tyson Goldsack, Daniel Nicholls, Danny Stanley and Alan Toovey.

"Ben Reid's form has been terrific," Malthouse said. "He'll come into the side and play full-forward, he'll play half-forward, he'll play centre half-forward and he'll do some ruck work in the forward line."

Reflecting on the form of his eight debutants this season, Malthouse said he would be "very surprised" if they weren't all still at the club next year.

"Ben's got to come in and play at that level, but all the rest of them, none of them have let us down," he said. "He (Reid) is ready to play and he'll attract some good opponents.

"Hawthorn will drop back in front of him and take his space, but that might leave some opportunities open for players further afield to get some kicks."

That could include Dale Thomas or Scott Pendlebury, who yesterday signed new contracts that tie them to the club for two and three years respectively.

Running defender Heath Shaw has also signed a new two-year contract, which Malthouse said helps keep "the foundation stones" of the club's future in place.

"It's fantastic, a vote of confidence in the club and terrific for the boys to want to be a part of it."

look i'm not having a crack - as this guy went before Sellar - but is obviously comparatable due to age - and playing position.
18 yrold getting his first crack already, doing good things in the Collingwood reserves....

I was a big Ben Reid fan pre-draft, but he's playing far too early IMO, regardless of form.

He's a rake.

Its far too early for Reid to be playing...a joke really.

He has kicked 8 goals in his last 3 games.

Sellar has kicked 5 goals in his last 2 games.

Sellar should be better than Reid...who went a lot higher than most expected.

It is known that we don't throw our draftees in the deep end when they are not ready and this could backfire on Collingwood, who knows?

We always wait so long to play our draftees.

I'm not having a go, because Sellar and Tippett aren't ready, but it's just annoying to see other clubs fans get excited over their 18/19 year old's while we always have to wait so long.

Although in saying that Gumbleton hasn't made his debut, neither has Thorp but he's getting closer by the week, and Hansen has only played 1 or 2 games but struggled. But for once it would be nice to get a sneak peak of our youngsters a little earlier.

I agree - but hopefully the wisdom of AFC avoid injuries in the future for some of these guys (OP, soft tissue injuries)

Gumbleton has been tempered by injuries, but I wouldn't have expected to see him for a little while anyway given his height. But when he is unleashed, I think I'll be so excited I'll forget he's wearing black & red.

I agree its a joke that Reid is playing, but I expect its only because Rocca has gone down. Expect to see Reid back at Williamstown shortly.

Yeah I know what you mean Drummond. If we do throw them in the deep end they may surprise and excel...who knows Sellar could play this year, you never know.

If it wasn't for Gill, I really don't think its that far from possibility. Sure, he needs a lot more development than most, but gosh there is just so much going for him that he could be worth throwing in the deep end.

Also remember, he has considerable number of senior SANFL games under his belt.

I still think if Sellar kicks a few bags in the next few weeks he will get a game or 2. Hes pretty well built as it is so i dont think it will be a problem form that aspect.

People don't get that Sellar is learning how to play as a key forward. He won't be fronting up for Adelaide anytime soon.

He's a natural ruckman, being developed into a forward. He'll take time.

It would be nice to get a look at 'em in the big stuff. The higher draft picks are the more likely to surprise and excel so I really would like to just see the likes of Meesen and Sellar given a crack, see how they go. Our talls haven't been brilliant this season so I personally don't see how we could lose that much by giving them a crack.

I realise this may come across in a way I dont intend but...

but why would we (or do we ) recruit players to "develop" them into certain types of players - if we were looking for forward WTF wouldn't we recruit a forward ??

For one, he has the potential to become a CHF. No doubt.

He's strong, agile and quick. He's got a great leap and a very nice kick.

He's heads and shoulders above the KPP taken below him IMO. Also a local product.

I thought he looked very good as a CHF in the two times ive seen him play the position. One being at the under 18s when he was supposedly half dead. He just went missing in patches

At the present time his best position is in the ruck.

However, he wasn't recruited to be a ruckman, he was recruited to be a key forward.

He plays about half a game there for Glenelg, and while he doesnt excel just yet, he more than holds his own.

What does their pick number have to do with their ability to surprise. Griffin came off the rookie list, Stiffy was a late pick - if anything, these bargain picks are more of a surprise than an earlier pick.

Be thankful we've developed a list that has depth and strength all of the way through it.
