SEN - Cornes

Sounds like there's a real opportunity out there for some content creators to get real and make a name for themselves. For far too long we've had these shock jock "reporters" out there doorstepping AFL folk or chasing the "scan" operators for juicy info. They claim to be following in the footsteps of Lou, Jack and Bob.....but they're so far from the comedy stuff that made those old gentlemen true entertainers that they're basically TROLLS operating from a media landscape. Kaneo isn't funny, he's a blunt instrument....a tagger on and off the field, never good enough to make the play himself. He requires gossip (like Caro did) to fuel his commentary and his vendetta's are so blatant that his victims must smile every time he attempts new material.

We were once blessed with the likes of Alf Brown, Ron Casey, Patrick Smith and Stephen Phillips. Even Scot Palmer and Mike Sheahan were respected for their knowledge. However since the last true football caller (Dennis Commetti) retired we've been plastered with incompetents who revert too quickly to the easiest way to make a $$$ (gutter rumours and inuendo) that "entertain" the masses.

There are enough Trolls on the internet (and certainly on BF) without having to be subjected to them on supposed "reporting" media. If you can't find or create enough interest in the sport itself and need to constantly fall back on the lowest common denominator then perhaps journalism isn't for you. Cornes and his ilk are demonstrating society's lack of discrimination and it's preponderance to accept mediocre (or less) where once they had exceptional.
He is essentially Hutchinson’s plaything.
Prop in place to generate controversy and antagonism, with very little regard for criticism. Ratings over rationale is the mantra sadly.

I understand the set formula: Populism...lowest common denominator, short attention span, divide and make $$$. I see it for what it is. Low paid hacks generating clicks, it certainly costs less to report from your armchair than it does to actually employ researchers, writers, editors and the like.

I just don't understand why real journalism can't at least compete with it (except for the price). Are there simply so few of us left that simply want the facts reported on, without embellishment or poorly constructed opinion, without the blatant bias or intentional want to antagonise?

We can ignore it (and do and have done) or we can see to its demise by actively denying it air.

We are an easy target for the media.

The glass half full side of me says we were 2 goals up at half time in a Prelim against the eventual Premiers - that included zero from Pendles, no Bobby, no McStay and Checkers on one leg.

The brand we play in finals more than stacks up.

We just need to develop a few more soldiers during the regular season.

If we can get -
All Australia Houston cooking then that would be massive.
Develop Steene in the Ruck
We upgrade on Ned Long
Bring on Saxena and Harrison

Exactly. The sky is falling apparently buy we were balls deep in a prelim with the premiers who we've also smoked on their own deck the past 2 years

My problem isn't only with Kane Cornes, it's with "Shock Jocks" in general. They lack nuance with most of the opinions they give out, and the opinions which have it don't get heard because they don't create eye catching headlines. It also makes it difficult to distinguish which is which, because you don't know whether they're being genuine.

Their success gives rise to others trying to build up a persona based more on content than substance. It also takes away from the decent analysis coming from commentators, because the organisations they work for will for the most part priotise the shock jock content over others in the articles they release.

I now tend to only listen to anything with Cornes if he's interviewing/conversing with someone that will provide actual analysis, and I'm happy doing that. Same that I only listen/read anything from Hutchy or Damien Barrett if it's about something to do with trade/FA or something in regards to inside info, because despite what I think of their footy opinions they're usually pretty accurate.

As people have said, it's best to just ignore him and just listen to something else if you don't like him.
