The Stravinsky four-year-old mare Serenade Rose has been retired after finishing ninth in the Group I BMW Caulfield Cup on Saturday co-owner Keith Biggs announced on Sunday.

'She was not injured but we have decided it is best to retire her,' Biggs said.

Serenade Rose, out of the Sadler's Wells mare Rose Of Tralee, and trained by Lee Freedman, was the champion three-year-old filly in 2005/6 season, winning the VRC and AJC Oaks, Wakeful Stakes, Arrowfield Stud Stakes and Edward Manifold Stakes. Her last win was the AJC Oaks at Easter.

She raced 19 time for eight wins and five placings for Biggs and co-owners TJ and JA Hughes, Lord Sam Vesty, A Gurney and bookmaker Michael Sullivan, earning stakes of $1, 773,635.

Why the hell would you retire her? She is only 4 and didn't have a lot of luck in any race this preparation. They are obviously looking at her stud future but if I had her she wouldn't be retired.

A lot of mares at four or five can start to lose interest in racing, obviously there are some freaks like Makybe Diva who can race a long career.
Her four-year-old season has not been the success that people were hoping for.
By putting her around in the autumn it could hurt her chances of becoming a top line performer at stud.
It is still a shame to lose her, I will never forget her three year old season, what a season.

Continues a bad record for Oaks horses beyond there 3 year old season.
I'm of the same belief. It's extremely hard, even for a dominating 3YO filly like Serenade Rose was, to come out and perform well at the top level. I expect even the 'mighty' Miss Finland to struggle at 4 as well.
