Welcome to the home of qootball in Queensland as we kick off the 19th series of Sweet FA State of Origin. The great state of Allies will be taking on Vic Metro in this Round 1 clash and Grand Final rematch as both teams look to start their campaigns on the front foot as well as settle old scores.
The Allies are of course the reigning State of Origin champions having beaten Vic Metro in the Series 18 decider, while the Melburnians last saluted back in Series 15, 4 long years ago. Let's have a look at the recent games between these two proud sides and the form of the players they'll be bringing into the tournament.
LAST TIME THEY MET
This game is of course a Grand Final re-match with the Allies coming out victorious in Tasmania in the Season 18 Grand Final. Captain damicky won best-on-ground honours on the day with 21 disposals while HARPSichord was also many punters' choice for BOG with his 38 disposals and 3 goals. Vic Metro failed to find a goalkicker to wrestle control of the game with two each to gab213, Sun Ra and Marlowe while SR was also his team's leading disposal winner with 27. He is of course unavailable for selection in this rematch. I've also been reliably informed that it has been years since Vic Metro beat the Allies so there'll be plenty of feeling in this one.
S37 SQUAD STATISTICS
The Allies bring a deep squad drawing in players from all over the country and will have 34 players to try and narrow down to a playing squad of 20. Premiership captain damicky will be back leading the team again alongside Dingster and the team boasts three S37 All-SFA players in Mrs Turbo, moginie and tony. ShaunDuggan and The Filth Wizard are two experienced goalkickers that will be relied upon heavily while their best accumulators include SOO rookie DemurePrincess, crazywildhorse and Strigoi.
Vic Metro have revamped their squad with four debutants this series, including EKA and Deestroy Medallist myblueroan, who joins James Colorado and Gralin as the three All-SFA reps from Melbourne. 'Mr 1000' okeydoke7 and Baghdad's gab213 bring strong goalkicking form into the series with okey also acting as one of two deputies to the skipper JC. NaturalDisaster, another vice captain, had a strong season in the ruck and should be able to link up well with the likes of Bovo and Ligma who have been midfield mainstays for their club sides.
Captains, please submit your teamsheets by Friday 28th June at 6pm AEST
