Seriously , do these AFL honchos just sit around dreaming up ways to screw over WA football all day ?

Yes they do. Every day Dillon when driving into work (whilst WA are still sleeping) he is thinking, how can we screw over WA today.

He gets Swanny and Harley on the phone, sometimes Laura Kane too, but that normally causes other problems, and says “how can we screw over WA today”.

“We could exclude them from Opening Round” says one. “Good one” is the reply, “but it doesn’t really go far enough”. “How about West Coast play their first game on a Sunday night on the Gold Coast”

“Brilliant! And if they whinge the can play their second away game at 9:30am WA time.”

What Western Australians don’t understand is that all us Eastern Staters are in on it too. Some say the AFL don’t listen to the fans, but I regularly get calls from AFL execs asking how can we screw over a Sandgroper.

Sorry, but the secret had to come out eventually and after you asked such a direct question, I felt I had to answer truthfully.

The real travesty is creating a rounde zero and extra bye for round zero clubs.
The two clubs that travel ten folds don’t get this bye.

This doesn’t make sense, but it does!
Growth market teams leg up
Vic teams with a chance to bring cup home leg up

Teams that don’t interest them in 2026

What are you talking about?
the only thing they think of
Is new business and a couple strong vic teams to keep vic gov happy

A normal sporting organisation treats all its members pretty similar

I’m happy enough with an honest answer and a promise to stay in vic

WA footy does need more investment, per capita they now have the worst participation of the footy states, games aren't even on the main channel there most times so TV ratings are right down and the talent the state is producing at the draft is really poor.

I think they'd actually do better if the AFL took over, I'm unsure exactly what it is WA football are doing, but the SANFL does a superb job in SA under a similar model, so it might be under funded or incompetence, I'm unsure. Overall though the game needs to invest in WA more to get it ticking along better, participation didn't even grow last year, the only state to have no growth.

WA and SA grassroots and developmental pathways need more funding.

But aren’t Freo and WCE two of the most stable and wealthy clubs in the league. WCE fans always boast about having $100m cash in the bank!

I find the Vic distributions interesting. St Kilda continue to get the largest distributions, even over North. And all the Vic clubs are pumping their membership numbers selling $7 memberships.

The two financially strongest clubs get lower distributions.

Well that's no surprise.

And let's be honest, Eagles have been crap for years now and are still pulling in the dollars and get the lowest AFL distribution. Amazing result off field considering the fans have got very little joy for four seasons now.

Just like all that extra AFL money being poured into Qld and NSW to grow the game. Grow the academies. Improve expansion state teams so they play finals regularly and sell TV rights deals.

What I would like to see is comparing AFL investment in WA junior development to other states. Because the development of WA talent has fallen off a cliff.

Why?

Is it funding or what?

Complaining your club is to financially secure is a new one
WA clubs have to fund the WA talent pathways via dividends to the WAFC. They also get the least distribution.

Meanwhile, clubs like Collingwood get more money, despite next to no travel and the AFL props up talent pathways in Victoria(as well as NSW/QLD).

Watch AFL house freak out if the Bears start out strong and junior participation in WA declines even further.

They're already struggling to produce elite talent. Hell, even the umpires are having issues finding enough people just to be able to play games across all levels.

Bad timing for WCE to be at the bottom of the ladder with the new NRL club coming in.

What do you spend the $100m in the bank on?

Why do WA clubs have to fund development pathways for other states when the AFL does that over East, especially when the Northern clubs get free and unfettered access to it?

I said it needs more funding in the post you replied to, the mines have gotten to you old boy. I’m supportive of the AFL providing more funding for WA and SA talent pathways.

Mines?

I live in Brisbane.

Also, you were the one banging on about the 2 clubs having mucho money in multiple posts, included the one where you said they need more distribution.

I'm merely telling you why they wouldn't waste their money propping other clubs up even further.

As mentioned Freo made 500k profit last year , is that seriously the 2nd best dividend in the league?

Surely not

Besides operating profit what other factors can there be in determining ‘ financial strength’

As expected no one really has a realistic take on why that is on here

Is it politics or what because it doesn’t make much sense to say Freo is a more financially powerful club than big VIC clubs like Collingwood etc
