Did James McDonald of Melbourne have a brother who played a few games for us in the 90's?
I remember a McDonald from that era but not much about him.
Wikipedia was no help:(

Yes, his name was Alex McDonald, he was number 1 draft pick at Hawthorn then traded to Collingwood a few years later.

Yeah alex pretty certain they are all brothers, good player.

Hard nut remeber him kicking one of the winning goals at the G one day, against st.kilda? was a long time ago.

But yes good hard player

Definitely brothers.

In fact Alex who played for us was actually draft with the first pick overall in 1988 to Hawthorn.

There was also another brother named Anthony:confused: I think.

Yes - I forgot about him. Also played for Melbourne, so 3 brothers in all.

From memory Alex was also married to a hot bimbo who was on TV (sports reporter or travel presenter, something like that). However, once his footy career ended prematurely, she dumped him and married some other higher profile person. Can't remember any of their names though.

There was a younger brother who was reputedly the most talented of the lot! His only drawback was that he had oversized feet. From memory his name was Ronald.

Her name was Frances Murphy.

Being from Ballarat, i do know of the McDonalds , who actually come from Waubra (About 20 minutes away).

There are 4 brothers. Alex, Anthony, James and Phil. My Dad coached Phil at under 18 level, and he was actually the most talented of the lot. Just didnt have the passion or heart that all of his older brothers did. But Alex was definitely a handy player for us in the mid - late 90's. He retired and became an accountant/player manager.

Yep, see him around quite a bit and is a complete tosser

Thats 100% correct. Wasn't ever good enough to live up to #1 draft pick, but apart from that, he was servicable at his best. A hip injury (or something like that) ended his career.

Back then there were hardly any expectations for #1 picks. #1 meant sod all.

Yes. Banick (something like that) is one who springs to mind - taken #1 by Richmond in the 2nd edition of the draft I think. Didn't we get McCartney at #1 or 2 in the 1990 draft? Can't remember how - must've been a trade I suppose. I think another duffer named James Cook (taken by Carlton) was vying with him for #1 spot.

Of course, by 1992 it all changed courtesy of a certain #1 pick who went to Brisbane for one season only. I've a feeling Rocca might have gone #1 in 1994 as well (to Sydney).

yes, McCartney and cook were taken in the same draft but neither Buckley or Rocca were No1 picks by any stretch.

Jeff White was No 1 pick in the 1994 draft...

IIRC we picked up Alex McDonald before the 96 season along with scotty crow from hawthorn

Are you sure? As I recall, Buckley was the hottest property going and every club in the country was desperate to get him. He wanted to come to us but Brisbane picked him up before we had the chance. If it wasn't #1, it was a priority pick or something very close. Rocca was similar in that he was also hot property and very keen to come to us.

From the CFC website - Rocca:

Draft history:
1994 AFL Draft priority selection (Sydney) No. 2 overall; 1996 AFL Draft traded by Sydney for Ben Wilson, Mark Orchard, No. 14 (Brett O'Farrell) and No. 33 (Will Sangster).

I hope Optimax is dangling the bait calling Alex McDonald a "good hard player".

He was a f'n showpony!

Think you'll find Brisbane pounced on Bucks with a Zoning Concession pick of some sort due to him being considered a NT player as he lived there when he was 14.

McCartney was pick 4 in 1990, James Cook was pick 2. Can't think for the life of me who went #1.

#1 was Stephen Hooper for Geelong
