Seven's AFL coverage in 1997

I was looking through some old TV guides from 1997 this morning and thought it might be interesting to look at the level of coverage Channel Seven was giving to AFL ten years ago.

Here's Seven's schedule from a few random rounds...

ROUND 8

5:00 Around The Grounds.
5:30 Seven News.
6:00 AFL Winners. AFL news and highlights from today's games: Melbourne v Geelong, North Melbourne v Port Adelaide.
8:30 AFL Football: Round 8. Adelaide v Sydney. Live from Football Park.

SUNDAY May 18

ROUND 12

FRIDAY June 13
7:30 AFL Football: Round 12. Sydney v Richmond. Live from the SCG.

SATURDAY June 14
4:00 Interfooty.
4:30 Rex Hunt's Fishing Adventures.
5:00 Around The Grounds.
5:30 Seven News.
6:00 AFL Winners. AFL news and highlights from today's games: Western Bulldogs v Port Adelaide, Collingwood v West Coast, Geelong v Hawthorn.

SUNDAY June 15
9:00am Sportsworld. Live.
11:00 Footy Panel with Rex Hunt. Live.
12pm AFL Gameday. Live.
2:00 AFL Football: Round 12. Fremantle v Essendon. Live from Subiaco, followed by Adelaide v North Melbourne. Live from Football Park.
10:40 AFL Football: Round 12. St Kilda v Carlton. Replay of today's match of the day from Waverley Park.

As you can see, Seven only ever aired three or four games per round in full, with many games only being allocated up to an hour in highlights packages.
those were the good days, didnt rex have a show, im rex hunt and your not?
if you watched the C9 sunday footy show, it had david ryse jones and Mark jacko Jackson and Lou Richards on the panel

I'd love a winners show/weekly highlights on a Sunday night on fta. Would watch it far more frequently than i would house rules, or the voice.

Even if I had already watched 5-7 games already (as I usually like to in a weekend) & Even if it was hosted by luke darcy!

I miss the 90s...

If only we kicked straight in the last quarter of that prelim and shut down McLeod, Jarman and Kane Johnson :(

That was great the live score updates "look away now". Half the time those games were on delay late in the night and the old man would want to watch it later and told me not to tell him, I always looked at the score.

Only way you found out the scores was to chuck the radio on and flip between 3AW, 774, Magic, Triple M, K Rock etc

This is the one I remember the most, aside from Greg Champion's "thing about football" tune (which I own the cd single of :D). It's more cringworthy than I remember it being at the time though haha.

Blatant rip off of the NFL's Monday Night Football intro back when it was on ABC (as in the US ABC).

NFL's version... intro starts at 1:45

That was also only Melbourne. Nowhere near that kind of coverage north of the Murray.

Sydney and Brisbane always got the 2pm Saturday "Match of the Round" LIVE from Victoria.
That way at least there was always some some kind of audience watching the game LIVE as it happened (Melbourne showing nothing until the evening replay/highlights, while Adelaide and Perth only showed Crows and Eagles games respectively).

Sydney and Brisbane would get the Swans and Bears if they were playing at home, but their away games were never guaranteed to be shown back into their respective markets, unlike today.

For a long while, Friday night games in Sydney and Brisbane were shown late night after midnight, similar to how the NRL was being showing in Melbourne late at night.

Sigh ... bogans will forever think their generations crap music is better than the next generations crap music. its all crap.
More meant most of the young people on BF would of never experienced the "look away now" thing when channels would show other games scores, giving you the chance of watching a replay later and not having the results. Nothing to do with things being better in the ol' days.

did we seem to get more Friday night interstate games back then, compared to now? Or it is roughly the same number?

I'd say it's about the same, although you had less non Victorian sides back then to work with.
If you include the Thursday night games this season, there's probably even more.
