A warm welcome from PG Enterprises Ltd to all of you astute consumers of quality SFA writing products.

The champions of Qooty are set to take the field, hamstrings are taught and biceps are oiled to perfection. It's Season 30, and this season PG Enterprises Ltd plans to shine the light on our match authors who slave over keyboards each week to bring each match to life for YOU and make YOUR qooty experience one of joy and wonder.

At the close of the home and away, we will be awarding PRIZES (you heard it - PRIZES!) to the best exponents of SFA Qooty Journalism. But, for that, you must check Proper Gander's thread. This one is different. The professionals may get prizes, but we are AMATEURS. We write for the love of writing.

The volunteers that take on this task write a review on one of the 6 matches in a particular round. The effort alone should never be taken for granted, and some of the style and imagination seen during seasons past has truly elevated our league to be a place of sharp intellect and elegant prose.

You can check S29's write-ups here:

Want to have a go as an author? Sweet! There are openings available still for volunteers. For more information, just ask below.

Probably worth pointing out: the review of one teams match for the week isn’t a massive effort - generally something like a one paragraph summary of what went down then list some of the standout players.

We keep having particular posters burned at the end of season awards period so we’re putting together a group to spread the load and get the write-ups done in advance of the traditional panic period two days before awards night. So if you would like to volunteer, you’re very welcome and you needn’t worry about having to spend vast amounts of time.

Gremio is keeping it all organised so if it is a massive cluster* we blame him but if it runs smoothly it’s down to the team :thumbsu:

R1, Roys 13.6:84 defeated Gumbies 12.7:79
by Mooch

Round 1. The first round. The Opener. After bouncing out of finals in straight sets in S29, the Roys were looking to kick off S30 with a confidence-booster against the reigning spooners, Gumbies. The Gumbies were just hoping for something. Anything.

The Roys got off to a solid start, with goals to rookies Supersuns and BLUEALLTHRU and Fred medallist Mooch. The Gumbies hadn’t read the script though, and their own rookie omgfridge and veteran Rodney Dangerfield hit back to keep the game close.

Roys led by 4 points at half time but the Gumbies kicked up a gear in the third stanza, with Barrybran and GWS Goose joining Rodney on the scoreboard, giving the Gumbies a handy lead at the final change. Beandip kicked an important brace either side of the short break, and this turned out to be crucial. Mooch kicked another couple and best on ground JackNah_8 kicked the sealer with 10 or so minutes to go to realign the stars and spare the bookies.

Supersuns and 3KZ is Football made the most of Jacknah’s dominant display in the ruck and around the ground (11 hitouts, 22 disposals, 3 goals), while GWS Goose (14 disposals, 8 tackles and 1.1) and first gamer omgfridge battled hard for the Gumbies but they just fell short in the end.

Roys: 4th, 1-0
Gumbies: 9th, 0-1

S29 couldn't have been better for the Swamprats. They started well (R5, 5-0), before having a mid-season slump. However, the end was close to flawless. In their last 10 matches, including Finals, Sin City won 9. They finished first on the ladder (12-5) and won the GF by a single point against the Demons. Nonetheless, the flags were unveiled before a list quite different from that which had just conquered all.

S29 wasn't a good one for the Royals. After an inconsistent start (R7, 3-4), Gold City found some consistency. It wasn't the right kind of consistency, though. They've lost 7 of their last 10 matches, finishing 10th on the ladder (6-11). Still, the Royals came with practically the same squad from last season.

S30 fixture put both teams head to head right at the beginning. Would Sin City carry its past season's form into the new one? Could the Royals go to the Underground and spoil the Rats' party? With a bounce of the qooty, the answers for those questions began to unfold before the world's eyes.

The match started even, no team was able to do much. After the teams traded goals (SCS 6-7 GCR), the Swamprats took control of the game. In five minutes, the hosts scored 5 times. Four consecutive behinds. When SarahSmiles finally scored a major for the Rats (SCS 16-7 GCR), it looked as if the flag-holders would impose themselves over the visitors.

It couldn't be further from the truth. The visitors responded with brahj, which promptly opened the flood gates. The Royals scored more three goals, before the Rats could set themselves again. There were 8' before HT, and Gold City led by 23 points (SCS 23-46 GCR). From that point on, the game became a see-saw. Every time the hosts reacted, the Royals would come and answer it right a way.

The Sinners were able to cut the deficit to 10 points four times, twice in each half. That was the difference at 3QT, after the best stretch of the game for the hosts. During Q3, the Golden Boys had managed to be 29 points in front (SCS 37-66 GCR). Still, it wasn't enough to put the game away. Three consecutive goals brought hope back into the hearts of the Rats' faithful (SCS 57-67 GCR).

The last quarter, however, saw more of the same. The hosts couldn't keep their momentum. The Royals started on top, just to see their difference cut down to 10 once again (SCS 72-82 GCR). With 10' remaining on the clock, the Rats had a shot at the comeback. It wasn't their day, though. Gold City stepped up again, finished the game strong, and were the rightful winners of the Golden Rat Cup (SCS 78-100 GCR).

Swamprats: 12th, 0-1
Royals: 1st, 1-0

R1, Bombers 10.5:65 were defeated by Furies 11.3:69
by Elton Johns Wig

Well, this was a match with plenty of spice coming from the build up during the week.

The Bombers, fresh from absolutely stinking it up last season, vs the Furies, determined that a PF slot wasn't enough, and hell bent on taking it further in S30.

One club, just hungry for a win having lost eleventy in a row, one determined to start in the right fashion.

It was an interesting match thread, with Norma Lee Ava having crossed from the Bombers in the off season, getting stuck in, and getting stuck into. Good times.

And so we got to the game. Rioli8217 put a sausage on the board after only 36 sec for the Furies, but the Bombers bounced straight back through Pugsley after 2 minutes. From there, even though it was an arm wrestle, the Furies slowly edged away to take a 19pt quarter time lead.

More of the same followed in the second quarter, with the Furies looking to break away on numerous occasions, but the Bombers doing just enough to stay in touch. The Furies kicked one more though, and the half time lead was 25pts.

In the third quarter, the Bombers really dug in, but they just couldn't seem to make any headway on the scoreboard. They won the quarter by a point, and trailed by 4 straight kicks at the last change.

The tide had really turned, and the Furies were under siege. Wave after wave of Bomber attacks hit the Furies defence, and some were getting through.

They drew to within 4 points at the 12 minute mark of the last quarter with a fine goal to CALL ME SNAKE , and seemed to be steamrolling the opposition. Incredibly, that was the last score of the match, as the Furies held on grimly to win a thriller.

In what turned into a shootout that was deserving of an Ennio Morricone soundtrack, this opening round clash between last season’s two losing Semi Finalists saw the Dragons lead from start to finish to escape the Colosseum with the chocolates. This was despite the affirmation noises of the baying Wonders crowd and the subsequently-influenced umpires, whose 20-12 free kick count ensured that they also left the Colosseum with something. Their lives, probably.

The week itself was highlighted by the gladiatorial bloodbath between the travelling phalanx of Drag rookies and hometown antagonist SSwans2011. They may not have hated, but sure as eggs they didn’t fear. It wasn’t pretty, in case you were wondering.

As for the qooty itself, the earlier banter seemed to spur on first-gamer VandoHawk who debuted in style with a 31 disposal/9 mark/1 goal performance which caught the eye of the Rising Star committee. He was well supported by captain-in-waiting serial_thrilla (25 touches/7 tackles), A Swallow (24 touches/1 goal) and veteran bazooka-holder Ljp86 (23 touches/5 marks/1 goal). Up front it was the double act of Hatchy1992 with his six-pack of snags and sophomore Maylandsman chiming in with 3 goals that did the damage.

For the hosts, the on-field standouts were ‘Cuddles’ ClarkeM (21 touches/9 tackles/2 goals/4 frees for) in an umpire-approving display, ruck cat Bonz (24 touches/16 hitouts/4 tackles/1 avatar bet victory), SweetD (24 touches), jezzajay (22 touches/8 marks/1 goal) and JT_the_Man (8 tackles/2 goals/6 frees for). The main avenue to goal for the hosts was perennial-scorer Sab22 who helped himself to 5 majors.

Both teams wanted to leave the disappointing S29 behind them, and, at least in the opening round, they did. The players have given their all. Those present at Van Cortlandt Park received a treat. This was probably the best match of the round.

After an even start between both sides, the Warriors stepped up and took a lead of 37 points at the beginning of Q2. The VCP was shaking. One could hardly hear his own voice due the noise coming out of the stands. From that point on, however, it was the East Side midfield who controlled the actions.

Red mist, coming from the bench, played like a freak in the center. Chipmunk was everywhere. The tandem The Jesus and Agent93 looked as if they could read minds – not only each other's, but Smoooothy's too. They were all unstoppable.

With Loonerty's sole major near the end of Q3, the difference had been cut down to only 5 points. When all seemed to be pointing towards a comeback for the ages from the visitors, the Warriors stood up once again and, for a brief moment, responded. Goals from NaturalDisaster, FootyGuy13, and Tonga Bob restored a bit of the difference. In the early minutes of Q4, Coney Island was leading by 24.

The Hawks didn't surrender and scored two majors, but it was the hosts' three consecutive behinds that left the game wide open in the last minutes. East Side kept pushing forward, but ultimately fell short. Papa Juggs' save at the goal line, denying TY24's third major, was huge. It should be the "Play of the Match."

R1, Demons 17.8:110 were defeated by Bears 18.10:118
by MWPP

After an eventful offseason for both teams, the reinvigorated Bears (elimination finalists in S29) took on the highly rated S29 runners up, the Mt Buller Demons on a perfect day for qooty. It was an active match thread with a great mix of light hearted banter, general discussion and qooty-related bets and threats.

In a high scoring rollercoaster of a game, the Bears began strongly with a 6-goal first quarter to take a 15-point lead at the first break. The Demons bounced back with a dominant 8-goal-to-2 second term and held a commanding 4-goal advantage at half time. The Bears managed to regroup in the main break, trimming their deficit back to 3 goals by the third change before storming home on the way to a memorable 8-point win to launch their season.

Reigning Deestroy medallist DemonJim was Best On Ground with 11 tackles and 108 DT points, with support from Van_Dyke (game-high 27 disposals). Tarkyn_24 was beaten one-on-one by frenemy MWPP, but won the FF shootout (and avatar bet) against opposing FF Metalcrusher with a 5 goal bag; whilst teammate Thetrader15 joined the famous list of players who have kicked a sausageroll.

Ultimately, the Bears had too many even contributors across the ground, including Matera92 (21 disposals, 3 goals), talented rookie/second gamer guero (23 disposals, 2 goals off HFF), and skipper Test Tickle (7 tackles). This proved to be the difference.

Demons: 10th, 0-1

R2, Furies 21.11:137 defeated Swamprats 15.10:100
by Mooch

Round 2. Coming off a hard fought win over the Bombers in round 1, the Furies were buoyed with a level of confidence not seen since the heady days of (checks notes)... moving on. While the Rats had started their premiership defence with a shock loss at the hands of the Royals - at home. Surely they will come out all guns blazing in this game?

This game was one for the ages. It was a fast, high possession, high risk game by both sides, resulting in lots of goals and crazy Dream Team scores. The Rats got out of the blocks early, with first quarter multiple goals to ant555 and Power Raid. The second term was a much closer affair, with Sterge and GotTheGoodes going toe to toe in the middle, and each snagging a goal to boot.

The Sweet FA has launched an investigation into what the Furies are putting in their Powerade bottles because after half time JackBero (37 disposals, 8 tackles and a goal) and Sterge (40 - yes FOUR-ZERO - disposals, 2 goals) ran riot in the middle. Both are currently being attended by the medicos for leather poisoning. ant555 (32 disposals, 8 tackles, 3.2 goals) and GotTheGoodes (33 disposals) battled hard but were overrun for long spells.

Edmund hunt kicked 5 straight for the Furies. GremioPower snagged 4 of his own for the Swampies, but the Furies 13 individual goal scorers laid the foundations for a 37-point victory in a cracking 36-goal game.

Furies: 2nd, 2-0
Swamprats: 11th, 0-2

little roy.jpg

In the first of two Roy-al Rumbles for season 30 [see what I did there??], it was Little Roy who celebrated Marlowe ’s 200th in style with a resounding 36-point victory over Old Roy.

In a classic case of leading your opponents into a false sense of security, a week of conviviality in the match thread gave way to the home team flying out of the blocks on game day, kicking 9 of the first 10 goals on their way to a 54-point lead early in the second quarter. Thankfully for the Monkey Men, however, they averted what was looming as the SFA equivalent of the Anglo-Zanzibar War and kicked the next three goals to stem the tide. They even outscored the Royals in the second half, but the damage had well and truly been done by then.

The load for the hosts was shared around, with The acurate one (21 disposals/9 marks/3 goals) probably having the biggest claim for BOG, while brahj (22 disposals/1 goal), milestoner Marlowe (18 disposals/8 tackles) and HawkPatrol (3 goals from 3 kicks) also contributed. Ultimately though, it was the Royal bookends who were the difference – up front The Filth Wizard slotted six majors, while down back Blacky held reigning Fredalist Mooch to 2 goals.

For the handball-happy Roys, the engine room of Runk (24 touches/4 marks), S29 Rising Star winner PurpleGreenRed (24 touches/2 goals), rookie RobR (23 touches/6 tackles/1 goal), JackNah_8 (19 touches/13 hitouts/4 tackles/1 goal), & Dingster (19 touches/11 marks) were who made the most of their opportunities.

Royals: 1st, 0-2
Roys: 8th, 1-1

Wind.jpg

It was cloudy and windy at Ljp86’s Lair, home of the Dragons, for the entire game. The homers were able to take advantage of the conditions and are still undefeated in S30, while the visitors have only their lack of accuracy in the first quarter to blame for their first loss in the season.

The Warriors started with the wind in their favor. However, the Dragons managed to hold them. Midway Q1, and the game looked as if it would be a really low-score affair. (DRA 0-7 CIW) Then, three quick goals put the home side on top. (DRA 18-7 CIW) It was only what the Dragons would do for the rest of the period.

Coney Island took back control of the action and pushed the homers towards the goal. However, they could only score behinds – 4 in a row. NaturalDisaster kicked a goal after siren, making the score a bit better for the visitors. (DRA 18-17 CIW)

The Warriors made it six scores in a row when their FF kicked a major at the beginning of Q2; which put them ahead on the scoreboard (DRA 18-23 CIW) Still, the wind was favoring the home team; and they made it count.

The Dragons would be leading 10’ in in Q2, if not for a “handy goal” from harry000, which kept Coney Island on top. (DRA 25-29 CIW) This soon was erased. The Dragons scored the last 4 majors of the quarter, reaching HT with a 19-point lead. (DRA 49-30 CIW)

Q3 was practically a reenactment of Q1. The Warriors, with the wind on their backs, started better than the Dragons. Randomizor goaled twice, cutting the difference to 1 goal. (DRA 49-43 CIW) Once again, however, they couldn’t hold momentum.

The midsection of the quarter belonged to the home side, who scored four times (2.2) against a sole major by the visitors. (DRA 63-49 CIW) The main difference to the first period is that Coney Island managed to kick straight. They scored 4 goals against one of the homers, getting into 3QT with a small lead. (DRA 70-73 CIW)

The Dragons knew that the game was ripe for them to harvest. The visitors managed to hold their lead for 6 minutes. After that, the home side simply ran over them mercilessly. In 10 minutes, the Dragons scored 5 unanswered goals, putting the game away for good. (DRA 106-80 CIW) The locals, then, entered into cruising control.

The Warriors did not give up, but they couldn’t finish the game strong to pull a comeback. The Dragons, lead by serial_thrilla, a sophomore, and Bradesmaen, a rookie, ultimately were the better side and won comfortably. (DRA 120-98 CIW)

R2, Hawks 18.18:126 defeated Bombers 12.9:81
by Proper Gander

Both teams came into the match off a loss, and both began with a grim determination to show their opponents some steel. With a hefty 92 pages of posting during the lead up, the questions in everyone's head were: who would prevail? and who would fail?

Warm conditions at The Eyrie suited the Hawks and PMBangers, who took first opportunity to bang it on the boot for a goal. Nothing came easily for either team after that... both adding no less than 3 behinds apiece before TY24 broke the drought with another for the Hawks. The first quarter saw 4 individual goal-kickers for the Hawks, with Kilroy the only major for the Bombers.

A very strong first half in the ruck by The Jesus saw the Hawks get comfortable, their midfield had it on a platter and moved the ball with urgency. Only inaccurate goal kicking prevented a blow-out at this point, the half time score saw the Hawks on 8.11:59 and Bombers on 4.7:31.

The third quarter saw the Jesus add another quality goal to his tally of two. miggs, Antonio BlueVein, and Pugsley booted one apiece to keep the Bombers in it, but the Hawks had settled in for some champagne football - forwards sharing it around to go into the fourth quarter more than comfortable 31-point lead.

But the fourth saw more of the same. While miggs and MITS showed some polish, it was otherwise qooty chaos from the uncoordinated Bombers; who failed to trouble the Hawks defenders in any meaningful way.

SIREN SOUNDS FOR THE END OF QUARTER 4
East Side Hawks, 18.18:126
Baghdad Bombers, 12.9:81

Hawks: 5th, 1-1
Bombers: 12th, 0-2

R2, Bears 15.7:97 defeated Wonders 13.8:86
by MWPP

The Bears hosted the Wonders on a warm Sunday afternoon. This S29 Elimination final rematch was a highly anticipated matchup in multiple ways. Offield, both the Bears and the Dragons sported new look outfits after busy offseasons. In a purely qooty sense, the Bears were looking to avenge their S29 finals exit and build on their round 1 win against the classy Demons, whilst the Wonders were hoping to get their season back on track after a loss to the S28 premiers, the Dragons.

The Wonders notched the first goal of the game within the first couple of minutes but the Bears kicked the only other 3 goals for that quarter to take a 16 point lead at the first change. The half time margin was identical (with 4 goals apiece in the second quarter) before a real low scoring arm wrestle in the second half. In the end, the Bears held on and secured a 11 point victory over the Wonders.

MWPP cameo'd at RR and was Best on Ground with a game high 92 DT points and 21 kicks/30 disposals, but was well supported by the evergreen kane249 (4 goals, 87 DT points) and classy FF Metalcrusher (6 goals). Returning player xenxen amassed 23 disposals after starting from then bench whilst promising rookie tony notched an impressive 21 disposals/ 8 marks in his second game.

For the Wonders, skipper Sab22 kicked a crucial 3 goals and could've had a bag of 6 if it wasn't for inaccuracy, whilst experienced players Jack The Godfather (7 tackles) , SSwans2011 (22 disposals), ClarkeM (17 disposals, 2 goals) and @wojinski (9 marks) battled all day with little support.

Bears: 4th, 2-0
Wonders: 10th, 0-2

R2, Gumbies 12.17:89 were defeated by Demons 14.17:101
by Barrybran

Mount Buller Demons travelled to the House of Gumby after both teams opened season 30 with a loss: Gumbies FFC, by five points to Roys FFC; and the Demons, by eight points to the Las Vegas Bears.

The Demons started well, kicking five goals to three in the first term behind two goals from _Cayz_. Inaccurate kicking by the Gumbies in the second quarter saw them kick six behinds, which cost them a chance at a lead. The Demons went into half time leading by 11 points.

The Gumbies kicked four goals in the third term to trim the Demons’ lead to one goal at three-quarter time. However, the Demons held the Gumbies off, kicking four goals to three in the final quarter to run out 12-point winners.

Dero was best afield for the Demons with 30 disposals and eight tackles, while Riviat picked up 33 disposals and three goals for the Gumbies. _Cayz_ was solid up front for the Demons, kicking five goals from a forward pocket.
