Dragons claim first ever SFA premiership

Dragons FFC has claimed its first ever SFA premiership, downing Coney Island Warriors 19.7 (121) to 16.10 (106) in a highly entertaining affair in front of a record crowd of 101,757 at Okey's Outhouse this evening.

Coney Island Warriors entered the game as slight favourites and soon justified that standing in the warm conditions, with Mr_Smooth kicking the opening goal of the game inside the first 47 seconds. The Dragons however dominated the bulk of the first term with goalsneak PVF answering a minute and a half later before goals to jenny61_99 and Pie 4 Life saw the lead extend to 13 points at the six and a half minute mark.

The Dragons dominated further but failed to capitalise on the scoreboard, kicking 2.3 for the remainder of the term whilst the Warriors booted 2.0 to leave the Dragons with a 16 point lead at quarter time.

Similar to the first stanza, Coney Island started the second quarter well with goals to Stronzo and also NetworkNerd reducing the margin to just two points after just six and a half minutes. But again the Dragons answered, first though co-captain The Filth Wizard and then boncer34's second saw the margin push out back to 14 points.

It was then the Warriors who couldn't make the most of their opportunities with two straight forward shots missed before Guardian Hawk goaled for the Dragons to help Dragons FFC to a 19 point lead at the main break.

Once again as per the first two quarters, Coney Island came out firing, slamming on two goals in little over two minutes to push themselves right back into the contest with barely a kick separating the two sides. But Dragons' spearhead boncer34 slotted his third and a second goal to midfielder jenny61_99 saw the margin again ebb out to beyond three goals.

NetworkNerd's second goal saw the Warriors once again slash the margin as it looked like the game's momentum would swing back yet again. However, the Dragons put a stop to that and kicked into gear booting the next three which included a wonderful solo effort from ruckman Hate who kicked two of three goals to blow the deficit out to an even five goals.

But as had been the case all game, the Warriors responded, kicking back-to-back majors before the Dragons kicked two of their own to again push the deficit out to five goals. BigJoeD had a chance after the siren to give the Warriors some momentum heading into the final term but missed which saw the Dragons enter the last change with a 28 point lead.

The last term was a tussle early before LCynic goalled after seven minutes and when boncer34 kicked his fifth goal, the margin had blown out to 39 points with 10 and a half minutes elapsed on the clock.

Coney Island weren't finished yet however and stormed back into contention with goals to Les Norton and Aussie Rocker to reduce the margin before Dragons' youngster Andonis1997 kicked his first to calm the Dragons' nerves.

But the shape of the game changed again as the Warriors rattled up four goals in just two minutes of game time to slash the margin to only nine points with 4:29 to play.

The next centre clearance again went the Warriors' way as they stormed into their forward line once more only to see their advances repelled thanks to several brilliant efforts from Dragons' defender Guardian Hawk. The ball was quickly cleared and finished in boncer34's hands who snapped for goal but missed a fairly straightforward chance directly in front to register a behind only with 2:31 left on the clock.

oogac had the resultant kick out but after playing on to himself he had few options to kick to and was wrapped up by Pie 4 Life in the forward pocket. The ball spilled free with boncer34 getting the crumbs and he ran into an open goal to boot his sixth and ensure the SFA premiership cup would head to Dragon Island for the very first time.

Boncer34 capped off his day by claiming the Deestroy Medal for the best player afield. LCynic (26 disposals, two goals), Hate (22 & 2), jenny61_99 (20 & 2) marshalled the Dragons' midfield while Determinant (16) and roo2macca (19) held things together in defence.

zackah (28 disposals, 2 goals) relished the move from Full Back for the Warriors and was clearly the their best while The Mighty Boosh (28 & 2), alex_is_on_fire (26), Raveneyes (25), El Dubya (24 & 1) and Reginald Perrin (21 & 1) never stopped trying.

In the end though, the Dragons were the better side over the full 100 minutes and ran out winners by 15 points.
