Round 1 saw the Championship get off to a fiery start at the MCG, with intra-state rivals Vic Metro and defending-defending champions Vic Country facing off. Metro controlled most of the game but kicked 4.0 to Country’s wasteful 1.9 and stumbled over the line, giving Country the worst start to the carnival they could imagine. Beez starred with possibly the most obvious 3-vote game of the tournament: 29 disposals, 7 marks, 5.0. Deddy, Spudregus, St Fly and drd23 should fight over the scraps of the votes for Metro along with Ninty and Gibbsy. from Country.

At the Adelaide Oval, SA were thumped by The Allies in what turned out to be a fairly omen of things to come for the rest of the competition. LionCub16, IMS, Marklar and A Flying Pube all starred for The Allies while Dagless played somewhat of a lone hand for SA.

In the wet and wild SCG, NSW&ACT took a victory on debut to shock the star-studded WA team. In a sign of things to come from the Western Australians, they lacked the consistency to put away the youthfully exuberant NSW&ACT team. In what was a very even contribution from the winners, only Ljp and larrikin really stood out.

Well already there’s controversy with the sim not deeming beez’s extraordinary game against Vic Country worthy of the full points. The first of the minor awards will now be unveiled: The Official Leading Goalkicker Award.

In a stunning display of overcoming hardship, Jobe3votes was dumped by Vic Metro and repaid The Allies’ faith by kicking more goals than any other player in the competition, leading The Allies’ forwardline to ultimate glory in the process. His haul of 17 goals in 5 games was two more than any other player managed and his accuracy rate was significantly more impressive than those around him on the goalkicking table. Jobe3Votes has fully earned the right to be declared the Leading Goalkicker of the Competition!

On to Round 2 of the count and WA’s woes continued as Vic Metro skipped out to a 9 goals to 2 lead at halftime. Once again Metro faded towards the end of the game but held on to win by 21 points. Shadow Man, peterss and Ljp86 were impressive for the Black Swans, while Metro was once again led by beez, with Deddy and St Fly chipping in along with impressive half-forward Gilbert_Hodge.

Vic Country got their title defence off the mark against The Allies it what was a tight arm wrestle at Kardinia Park. EagleOz83 took a Leo Barry special in the last second of the match to save Vic Country’s bacon and secure the win that would spark their campaign. Big Bad Buddy and BILC were good for Country while Reardo dominated the ruck and RUL and LC 16 again played important roles for The Allies.

South Australia and NSW&ACT fought out the battle of the youngsters, with the form-lines reversing for both teams. SA were easy winners in a high-scoring shoot out, with the 132-112 scores flattering the Sky Blues. The Doctor11 led from the front with 5 goals while Coopers, Rhodesy_Blues and WAG were all solid through the midfield. For NSW&ACT pantskyle was sensational in the ruck, while LandOfTheGiants was superb with 32 disposals.

Shifty Deddy robbed Beez of 3 votes in RD1 but I'm okay with that because he didn't rob me.

Go Deddy, win a SoO MVP for Vic Metro.

Midfield youngsters Deddy and drew23 are out front with ruckmen Reardo and St Fly breathing down their necks. We’ll return to the count shortly but now it’s time for the next of the minor awards.

The Marklar Medal is to be awarded to the player with the most Marklar-esque qualities of being a good player and a poster everyone knows but no one really rates highly enough. The player most deserving of the accolade of Most Underrated for SoO#9 is… Dagless. Dagless was by far the most important, prolific and enjoyable poster for SA while being their mainstay in the ruck and runaway leader of the Hitouts from start to finish. Congratulations Dagless!

On to Round 3 of the Boncer Medal and we’re at the halfway point of tonight’s count. It is still literally anyone’s medal, with a good back end of the championship enough to claim the award from here.

It was the upset of the tournament when South Australia defeated the previously undefeated Vic Metro at home to make the tournament much more interesting. A very slow start by Metro left them 5 goals behind at the quarter time break. They fought back to lead by three points going into the last break but once again faded badly to allow the young South Australians a 25 point victory. Jonts, Coopers and Loopy_cam were great for SA, as was that man Dagless in a great battle against St Fly. He was good for Metro, but not as good as beez who had his third blinder in a row (and surely his first 3 vote performance) while Eth finally shook off his post-Mobbs Medal blues to record a great game.

Western Australia at home came up against a revitalised Vic Country outfit and were bested to the tune of 10 goals. Mr Eagle played somewhat of a lone hand for WA as they were comprehensively outplayed by Country, who had 4 players crack a DT ton: croweater41, fighting fury88 and BILC were excellent in the midfield, royboy2 made a surprising but extremely impressive move into the ruck while Gentlemen kicked 5 goals 1 to put WA out of the game.

The Round finished off with NSW&ACT hosting The Allies and they competed well for the first half. After that it was a rout with The Allies comfortably romping to a 46 point win. Pantskyle and Flaps combined well in the midfield for NSW&ACT while tim_saints, PVF, IMS, Marklar and Reardo all acquitted themselves well. On the other hand, full forward and co-captain Gee Dub had 2 touches for 2 behinds for the Sky Blues.

Our third minor award for the night is the Most Promising n00b Award. This award recognises the contributions made to the State of Origin competition by those who have had no experience in the qootiverse. There were a number of criteria used to assess the impact and potential of both the posting and playing aspects of the large number of rookies who took part in the carnival. In the end, a shortlist of six players was drawn up. These players were: A Flying Pube (TA), Coopers (SA), Prospect Vale’s Finest (TA), PooMonkey (VM), IllBeTheJudge (NSW) and pantskyle (NSW). Due to his exceptional work both on and off the field, pantskyle is awarded the Most Promising n00b Award. Congratulations pantskyle!

On to Round 4 of the Boncer Medal count and we are still yet to see a leader emerge from the pack. Could Deddy, St Fly and Drew23 share the award on just 5 points?

Vic Metro were off to Canberra to take on NSW&ACT and after a slow start managed to come out on top thanks once again to inaccuracy by their opponents in the last quarter. A 5.2 to 4.9 final term sealed a 26 point win for Metro to keep them in the hunt for the title. The hero for Metro was the unstoppable doggies ftw, with 6 hitouts, 15 kicks and 6 goals 6 behinds to single-handedly put NSW&ACT to the sword. Eth and Speck shared 17 tackles between them while DemonJim and Gilbert_Hodge were fantastic on the half-forward flank. For NSW&ACT Flaps, saintkildaman and IllBeTheJudge were all serviceable, while Gee Dub continued a poor run by kicking 1.9 for the match.

Vic Country travelled to AAMI stadium for their clash with SA and made their way back past Horsham 7 goal victors. SA had few real contributors, with Coopers and Dagless able to hold their heads up somewhat. Vic Country had a similarly even effort from their players, with Claypigeon, Fred and BBB all on top of their game.

The Allies hosted WA at the ‘Gabba and wiped them out with an 11 goal shellacking. They were never challenged by a WA outfit which seemed incapable of stringing together any good passages of play. A Flying Pube dominated the game with able contributions from Prospect Vale’s Finest, Reardo and 5.7 from Jobe3Votes. larrikin and HawkPatrol combined well in the middle but will struggle to push their way into the votes.
