SFL DIV3 2014

That's good to hear not having a go at your club at all, that's good you can get those ex juniors back all i want to see as a sustainable SFL comp without sides coming in and going out when it all goes pear shape.Good luck to CPL for the year.

I would akin our position to that of Skye when they started. Strong junior club already in place it just takes a bit of time to get the transition going between the 2 clubs. But with good recruiting in the initial stages it only took Skye 3-4 years from start up to win the flag and go up to Div 2. Now their junior to senior transition is in full swing and they dont look like coming back down anytime soon.

As for my prediction

Top 3
CPL - Same reasons stated by others
Dandenong - Were fairly strong last year and would be at similar strength this year
Mt Waverley - Always up there, when they don't have injuries they can be very difficult to beat.

3-7
Sandown - Much was expected from them last year, but they had a number of games in which they lost by just 2-3 goals which they probably had every chance to win. I would expect more of those close games to go in their favour this year.
South Yarra - I know you have to give teams coming down respect, but the form of teams coming down hasn't been great in recent years (Caulfield & Ashwood). The fact that Caulfield finished 6th in div 3 in 2012 and went up to div 2 and beat South Yarra by 10 goals on both occasions in 2013 leads me to believe that they may have a bit of work to do to push for a top 3 spot in div 3. Who knows, this work may have already happened in the off season.
Black Rock - Riddled with injuries first half last year and turned it around towards the end but it was just too late in the season. 5th-6th my prediction
Ashwood - Finished 5th for the last 2 years, not many ins, will probably finish 5th-6th again.

8-10
Hallam - Looks like they have bolstered their numbers quite well in the off season and may push higher then where I have put them right now. Interesting to see how they go in their praccy games.
Lyndale - It was said before, exceeded everyones expectations last year but I think Black Rock will be stronger this year and finish above them.
Endeavour Hills - This club has alot of potential, they play on the same ground as a junior club and have the chance to be fed with juniors from that club going forward. I dont think they will be any stronger this year but i hope they keep pesisting and build that relationship with the junior club. If so, then things may turn around for them in the future.

So how did everyone everyone go in their praccy games this weekend?

Carrum def. Skye by 2 goals - Lions looked very fit, hit the packs hard and in numbers. Skye looked like they had the wood on us at the start but CPL took control after the first quarter keeping Skye goalless for 2 quarters. A very promising start to the year.

News from other games?

You left out the bit about your courageous coach and his dispicable behind the play incident which left Skye's coach knocked out and with many stitches in his face. Pretty sure this won't be the last that is heard of this.

I watched half of the game, after going to another earlier.

Skye were never going to stand a chance imo, they might be one of the favorites for Div 2, but Carrum has some genuine Div 1 guns in their side, and could of smashed Skye in the last with the wind but looked to take their foot off the throat.

Moor, Barr and Mouritz is a bloody good trio to bring into any club and destroyed them. I was pretty impressed with Hatsis and one of their half forwards also. Going to be very very hard to topple this year for Div 3 sides.

I can't really comment on the incident as I didn't see it (All i saw was the Skye coach being helped off the ground).

It is quite a strange situation as from what I understand both coaches are good mates off the field.

This does not take anything away from the fact that Ben did not look in a good way at all coming off the field. I do hope he pulls up ok and has a swift recovery.

Lyndale exceeded expectations once again and defeated Powerhouse by 7 goals

I could never understand why players who are Div 1 standard would play Div 3 it doesn't make sense all it does is lop sides the comp.
Are they looking for another flag or want to exert there superiority not sure, clubs aren't patient especially new clubs they want to be successful yesterday they want a flag now these clubs generally fall by the wayside a strong club is a long term goal instant success can lead to disaster very quickly.

Totally agree, a lot probably do return to play with mates but you can't really tell until the team wins a flag and go up a division and then who stays and who goes!
For CPL, Be interesting to see if some of the quality players from last season/recruits this year can get games in the 1's! If there good enough, as they say they are, not all can fit in one side, can't see that they would want to play division 3 seconds football!

If this did happen, it's a very low act, considering as well it was only a 'practice match'!!!!

In other praccy games I see that Sandown got over Richmond Centrals. I've played Richmond Centrals before about 3 years ago and they would of been quite competitive in SFL div 3 back then. They have since gone up a div in the ammos after winning a flag so some good signs early for the Cobras.

I also see that they will be taking on Hallam at home next week in a praccy match.
Is it just me or does it seem a bit strange to be playing a team in your own division in a praccy match?

I do know that most teams in A section amateurs do it, for example de la salle are playing old scotch in a practise match then playing them the week after in round 1.

How do people think black rock will go this year?

If it were me I would like to play a team slightly above the standard that I play in, rather than play someone within your own division. IMO a team can learn so much more from a team of a higher standard, rather than show your hand to someone you'll play against later on that year

I know it's not uncommon, imo i would of thought it should be avoided if possible. Happened to our Under 19s last year, played Hampton in a praccy match then played them round 1 the very next week. That was a bit different though as the seniors happened to be in different divisions.

How do people think black rock will go this year?

I think Black Rock will go alright this year. As is what is being said with South Yarra, Black Rock came down from Div 2 last year and should be respected. They didn't finish last when they came down either, they came down due to administrative issues. Injuries hit them hard first half of the season, i was speaking to one of their officials when they played Carrum and he said they had 19 players out to injury, most of which were starting seniors. All you need to do is compare results against particular clubs last season to see how much of an impact injuries made to this side in the first half of the season.

First half of the season
Round 5 - Lost to Dovton by 97 points
Round 6 - Lost to Sandown by 161 points
Round 7 - Lost to Carrum by 77 points
Round 8 - Lost to Ashwood by 8 points
Accumulative Margin: -343

Second half of the season
Round 14 - Lost to Dovton by 52 points
Round 15 - Defeated Sandown by 5 points
Round 16 - Lost to Carrum by 16 points
Round 17 - Defeated Ashwood by 63 points
Accumulative Margin: 0

If they have a similar list, bolstered by a couple new recruits and don't have the same injury spell as they did early on in the season last year, I reckon they will be quite a strong contender this season.

I can help with this one. De La & Scotch have a long-standing arrangement that they play each other every year in practice games. Good relationship between the clubs and all their teams (1s, 2s, 3s and U19s) are in the premier division so we get a competitive hit out for all our teams. Certainly not ideal that we play then play them a week later in Rd 1 but practice games being what they are I think the line-ups will be very different when the real stuff starts.

Additionally some ammo clubs – especially ones from the top grades, are a bit reluctant to display their talent in practice games to “paying” leagues. A few unscrupulous clubs after seeing certain players in action have thrown $ at them to lure them across. With the coin being offered in some country and suburban leagues it is getting harder and harder to get talented blokes to stick around and play for nothing. As such VAFA clubs tend to play VAFA clubs in the pre-season.

I always thought top grade teams in VAFA have some sort of non-cash incentives that keeps players, ie: scholarships for their children and stuff to keep the players.

Another urban myth SB. VAFA clubs bust their hump like everyone else to retain players and keep the doors open. We face similar challengers to all other clubs – the obvious difference being we don’t have to worry about player budgets but we lose don’t get revenue from grog sales during the senior game. Swings and roundabouts. A great comp but not for everyone.

Anyway did not come on here to pump up the merits of the ammos – just top respond to the above post. Good luck to SFL clubs this year. Reckon your comps traveling nicely at the moment.

Div 3 Review

CPL - New club. Not enough material to go on. Making the Grand Final in first years speaks for itself.

Dandenong - Off-field basketcase. Showing signs on field.

Mt Waverley - Another off-field basketcase. Can't perform when it counts.

Sandown - Best run club in Div 3. Can't perform when it counts.

South Yarra - Just come down from Div 2 where they've struggled the last few years. Have the worst ground in the SFL.

Black Rock - Went broke chasing a Div 2 flag. Still paying the price. Years away from being competitive.

Ashwood - Have off-field support. With Sandown, most likely to hang around in Div 2.

Hallam - New club. Not enough material to go on. Playing stocks are weak.

Lyndale - Basketcase off-field. Years away from a flag.
Endeavour Hills - New club. Not enough material to go on. Playing stocks are weak as well.

THey are run very well and I think you'll find that is because they employ Brett Phillips (host on 1116SEN) as the club's General Manager.

I don't think any other team in the division employs anyone to execute the clubs objectives...i could be wrong.

Looking forward to Buddylove to come down to Lyndale and show their committee how it's done. Flog of the highest order you are.

How were everyones praccy matches?

Carrum def. Caulfield by about 4 goals after being down all day and only getting up in the last quarter. Pre season training looks like it has paid off with Carrum simply looking like they had more in the tank in the last quarter.

Any other scores or news? I am interested to see how Sandown v Hallam went
