SFNL Div 1 2026

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

They are a better fit for the MPNFL, but as we know they turned their back on that league a while back and the southern peninsula clubs won't entertain the prospect of them ever coming back.

The whole situation has been an A-grade fk-up by all involved ever since the SWGFL joined the MPNFL as a separate division.

Out of curiosity I went down a rabbit hole and did some maths about the average distance and time a trip from each club in Div 1 to Pakenham and Officer would take. This was pretty much just a fun brain project but I thought I’d share it as I found it interesting. Curious to know other people’s thoughts.

As a young bloke living growing up in the sticks, in the late 90s we had to merge leagues. In the first season of the merger we travelled 176km one way to have the oppo FF kick 16 goals. Long trip home.

I think the days of localised football are well and truly over.

Although still pretty localised even the NFNL have a trip from Whittlesea to Northcote in Div 2 , Kinglake to Epping in Div 3

Its the way footy is going

I played against them in West Gippland , stay there
Its ok Bedders your proud Ormond boys don't have to work with us southeast scum, we did a survey 2 years at the club i was at the time based in bayside council only 6 people lived within 15k of the club, and we had people travelling from Pakenham and rye

Who called you scum , what a pathetic post

I highly doubt Pakenham will move their senior sides to southern, would just about kill their netball club - I'd think they would keep pushing to join west gippsland or stick it out in outer east before they move
Narre has done it successfully and there netball play in another league now so it’s possible

A nice inner southern / south east / bayside comp would be fine if it was left to its own devices. The problem is it won’t be as we exist in an environment where all the local leagues see each other as enemies and competition and thus pick away at each other.

The MPFNL were openly trying to poach SFNL clubs when they were on their third division mission (which their own clubs actually didn’t want) and the EFNL has had a good crack at plenty of SFNL clubs too (some they have got, some not).

So as a local league like the SFNL you don’t really have the option just to sit there and run your ideal local league as you’re just going to be attacked from all sides by other leagues.

You have to be on the attack because if you’re not a hunter, you’re dinner. Pretty standard business stuff.

Hence the SFNL need to be proactive in trying to expand which is what has led them to Cranbourne, Narre etc and will lead them to the likes of Pakenham and Officer.

All the local leagues in Melbourne need to be abolished (from an admin and off field structure point of view) and the whole lot managed by one body that can make the best decisions for the game overall. That might get you a nice inner southern / bayside comp as there’d be no rival body trying to steal clubs and they could all just be put in competitions that suit them best.

But good luck with that happening.

They say it was berwick who instigated breaking up from mornington,I know Pakenham were happy there and Cranbourne should Definately be in it now considering how many clubs are within 15 to 20 min of cranny

Heard that Springvale couldn’t field a reserves team on the weekend and had to cancel the practice match
Surprised by that as they seem to have recruited very well.

Any insights from the weekends practice games? Advised that Cheltenham got flogged by a C grade ammos team. Missing a few or is the dynasty in peril?

Some C grade Ammo teams would go well in the SFL

Parkdale were good for their first hit out, Chelt had at least 10 to 12 out due to prior commitments, cricket finals, cricket trips. Looked really slow and fitness seemed an issue.
