SFNL Division 1 2024 discussion

2 down has been the word around for sometime. Not against it but there’s not a lot between the 2 battling for 8th - the x2 Demons.

If the 12 team division did eventuate, Mordialloc relegated is a foregone conclusion but the 2 promotions from
Lower division - having watched the top 3 play one another ..Murrumbeena vs Doveton and Murrumbeena v East Malvern I dont think there is an awful amount between the 3 of them…Beena with the top end but battling points and best 22 under 46pts cap will be a battle - either way all 3 are a long way off where East Brighton was positioned 12 months ago and will need to all add 4/5 Real top enders in addition to holding their current top 12-14 to keep afloat in the top flight if the challenge is accepted.

The Narre coup - The head honcho should sit back pat himself and SFNL board team on the back and enjoy a glass of Pinot - this club like what Cranbourne did on arrival will sharpen up this competition…. Make no mistake. the standard has improved but get ready folks the professionalism and stakes are about to rise again.

Narre, Cranbourne, Cheltenham, St Paul’s, Dingley, Port Colts, Springvale, East Brighton is the basis of a very strong comp and there’s a little bit of depth below. The league is finally getting back to where it should be, the geographic area is enormous and it should be a very big league, which it will be when it’s not being picked for parts by the EFNL, MPNFL, VAFA and others.

Berwick and Beaconsfield would be great gets too.

Shame there’s no Noble or Beaumaris.

No chance paky will be allowed in . Pushing the boundaries too far .

Berwick and beacy are watching with interest but that is as far as the league will look .

Won’t get the 2 District club’s Oakleigh or South as both are happy where they are maybe try a get a Glen Eira to join.
But overall Southern is getting better but remember the aim should be to make all grades great not just Div 1 and 2 and here’s any idea for you Bedford or Mr Southern Bayside Football how about renaming Division 1 premier grade might give it a bit of polish.

Bomber it’s saying back mate….great concept just need someone with the insight to get it up and running. Unfortunately Ammo clubs too stubborn to move across and the rest of us too lazy or not enough ‘balls’ to envisage starting it up. Cricket seem to have got it right!

Oakleigh’s issue is juniors, to their credit they want juniors and have kicked it off.

The SMJFL would not admit them. So they had to enter the EFNL, who required them to bring their seniors over.

Get them a SMJFL side and I think they’d happily play in the SFNL.

Once you start stretching out to Pakenham, Officer and even Berwick then you lose the essence of the competition. The SFL has been down this path before and it ended in tears in the 90's when they absorbed the Churches competition, and blew out to 5 Divisions. They gave up their strong junior competition and then stood by and watched as clubs folded year on year. Eventually they lost Bentleigh, Beaumaris, South Districts, Noble Park and Balwyn. The SFL need to look in their own backyard. The biggest threat to the competition are the number of teams with no juniors. These clubs can quickly disintegrate when one or two major backers retire or pass on. Look at what happened to Doveton who won promotion and then nearly folded. Yes move on and grow the competition, but also pause and have a look at the mistakes previous administrations made and make sure they do not repeat them.

Considering East Malvern shares its ground/facilties with one of the biggest junior clubs in the state and still doesn't have a relationship with the junior football club, I'd imagine it's not that easy at club or organisation/competition level.

Can't see Beaumaris leaving the VAFA anytime soon.

Better off focusing on Oakleigh and possibly Elsternwick (who are on the up of late, albeit in the lower grades)

Port Melbourne to Pakenham is under an hour (just) so okay but probably on the limit of what you want in a local league.

The EFNL has also become too big and bloated. The mission was 50 clubs but that isn’t going to happen now - they’re back to 47 with Glen Waverley folding and they have clubs struggling for numbers. Berwick and Norwood have regularly put out 15 or 16 players in reserves games this year. In Premier Div, it’s embarrassing.

I think a proper review would probably show that the entire area covered by the EFNL and SFNL would be better served by three leagues rather than two. 85 clubs in the two leagues, plus some coming in from the Outer East and the northern MPNFL clubs - you’d be getting toward 100 senior clubs.

But it won’t happen, too many individual empires to build and no interest from above in leading change.

Sfnl just announced the Div 1 gf will be played on the Sunday due to the AFLW.

They had issues last year and are kicked off their home ground again.

Not sure what their contract with Moorabbin is but this is another embarrassment for the ceo
