Does anybody else think 07 has shades of the 1992 season. Young players we have introduced have stepped up to the mark and performed immediately ala Sav Rocca and we are flying early on. Hope the season doesn't tail off like 92 however haha.

More like 1988. We walked in to that season with some fresh faces and some kids from the previous year who won the U-19 Premiership. Ended up with the double chance that year, and while we went out in straight sets, at least the foundation was laid for our Premiership assualt in 1990.

In fact 1988-1994 was quite an era for the Pies. We could have and should have achieved more success in that time, especially in 92 and 93. Without Millane, however, we lost our way.

Yer true very good point, well if your right by 2009 we should have the flag rapped up :p

Agree with this whole-heartedly.

I think people often overlook how significant a loss like that can be to a playing group - It's not as though any other premiership teams in recent times have had to endure a similar tragedy.

It would be like if someone like Heath Shaw or Dale Thomas were lost... That infectious personality, respect of and from teammates, and incredible ability on the field... God damn that was a tragedy - It still gets me upset to think about. :(

I Think there a similarities with our small men when it comes to the 89 and 90 team ie Brown,Francis,Russell,Millane with Pendelebury,Thomas,The Shaw brothers,L Davis maybe there not similar running players, but i think they have the potential to be just as good if not better then the 90 batch of running players, considering we have players like Dick,Stanley,Cook comming up also its exiting times.
Potentially if you compare the back line and forward line with the 90 team its also looking good. ie Morwood,Christian,Crosisca with Brazilian magic,Maxwell and the silent assasin Presti. its also looking good.
If we get Rusling healthy with Cloke Davis Egan pontentially its also looking good.

We had many of the building blocks but LM knew full well where our deficiencies were and made damn sure we filled those holes. We got a few players aver the next 2 years but the big move that lead to the flag was getting Russel and Francis from SA. I think Francis had a longish contract at the time that we had to negotiate him out of and Russell wasn’t setting the world on fire. I seem to recall issues with his coach.

Agree. 1991 was a massive hangover and I suspect LM learnt a lot from that which he used at Brisbane. 1992 was a lost opportunity. No doubt losing Millane hit hard. I remember Daicos saying after the final v St. Kilda that when the siren went he felt relief that the season was over because it had been such emotional drain. 1994 we lost a close one to the eventual premiers in WA. But for a McGuane dropped mark what might have been.

i have no doubt that our season will taper off. you cant expect the youngins to continue to play at the level they are.

Tarks is in blistering form, as too Maxy. Add in Clement, Presti, Bucks, Holland, Didak, Lonie and Licuria to our best 22...

I wouldn't say we don't have some very strong pleayers for the end of the year.

yeah fair call presti, clement, tarks and holland.but you cant assume didak will be at 2006 best, you cant assume that lica will find pace and skill. Lonie has OP so prob wont have much of an impact this year, cant really count on buckley either.

is it fair to expect the likes of Thomas, Pendles, Shaws, Obrien, Fraser, Cloke, toovey, cox, goldsack... to maintain there great early form probably not. most senior players cant do that, there are very few 18,19,21,21 yo buckleys running around in the AFL world they some will taper off at some point. Im just offering the other side of the arguement, am not being negative and wanting the side to faulter. I just dont want ppl to get hung up when the odds are stacked against us at the minute. thats what i think anyway. give them a few preseasons and i think a premiership will beckon!

Think people are forgeting just how good our midfielders were in 90

T.Shaw, Wright, Millane, McGuane, Francis, Russel all of these guys were AA at some stage, think all bar Francis were the equivalent of AA in 90.........our midfield was our strength in 90

We also had a good ruck in monkhorst

Up forward two club legends playing at their peak, Daicos and G.Brown

At the minute we dont compare to that, but u dont need to have as good a list anymore to win flags

How did that season tail off?

Collingwood finished equal first (3rd) with 16 wins after 22 matches, and the rules of the finals at the time meant there wasn't a second chance for the 3rd placed team if they lost in the first week. In that first final at Waverley, Collingwood played a very capable St.Kilda (6th) that included Lockett, Harvey, Leowe, Winmar and Burke, and they had just had a bye the previous week as well because there were 15 teams in the AFL at the time.

Lockett kicked 5 goals, Leowe kicked 2 goals from 27 possessions and 13 marks, and Harvey had 34 possessions which was the difference in an 8 point loss. Coliingwood were still a better team than St.Kilda, but they were always going to be very hard to beat in that first final, particularly after they had the previous week off, and the AFL changed the rules of the finals after this due to the unfairness toward the 3rd placed team.

This loss meant that 4th placed West Coast went straight through to play Geelong in the Second Semi Final at the MCG, and they beat them by 38 points to make the Grand Final. It's fair to say that Collingwood would also have beaten Geelong in this match had they beaten St.Kilda the previous week. West Coast then went on to beat Geelong again in the Grand Final.

Agree completely. Our rovers in 88 and 89 were Shaw and Kerrison, playing completely negative tagging roles. In 1990 we found some offensive weapons in the midfield in Russell and Francis that we did not have before.

Kelly doing his knee in 92 hurt us. We should have won another flag in that time most of the players were in their early 20s.
