Having finished the SFA season as minor premiers, atop the ladder after the Home & Away season, the Southern Dragons - monikered "Shagons" - were spotted yesterday relaxing at the local cinema in an exercise captain Ljp described as "team bonding".
"We just got the boys together to rekindle the team spirit that was strong throughout the year. We felt it dropped off slightly towards the end - especially in our last round loss to the Mod Squad - so it just needed a bit of a tweak and we'll come out in week two of the finals fit, firing and, most importantly, genial against whoever we're opposing.
"The squad we have assembled is brilliant, and have thoroughly deserved the week off which we will use to sort out some things in our gameplan; the way we have played the last few weeks hasn't been good enough to win a premiership, so we're planning to tweak a few things, maybe change some players around - just generally reshuffle the feel - and we should come out firing" the star wingman said.
Despite believing the team would regain their form within the break they have earned, Ljp stopped short of declaring the premiership a cakewalk: "at our best we'd go close, but who knows? Football's a funny game and has a funny way of doing funny things to teams that get ahead of themselves..."
With a star-studded midfield incorporating Rising Star favourite Timmy_Saints and Petterd in the ruck, on top of the effervescent former Mob. medallist Ljp, their opponents will suffer some sleepless nights upcoming to the penultimate match of the 2009 season.
In exciting news for the competition's top team, emerging wingman cormick has warded off rumours of a potential move to the Fighting Furies, the self proclaimed enigma of the league. "Yeah, no, I doubt I'll be moving. I rate loyalty as one of the most important qualities a person can have. The Shagons' gave me a shot last year which, I would like to think, I repaid. However this year I've been poor to say the least and so I think I owe the club something. Hopefully I can produce in the finals. But even if I do, I highly doubt I'll be moving clubs.
"The Furies made a minor bid for my services last year, but as I said, loyalty is an important characteristic. And I'd love nothing more than to shove it up those guys down at the Furies. Off field I have a good relationship, but when it comes game time, the white line fever kicks in and I'd love to smash them both physically and on the scoreboard."
If the Dragons' management can keep their current list together, they would be hot favourites to win a premiership before too long. But, with their movie still playing, there's nothing more to add. The Shagon wagon keeps on rolling...
