Shane Edwards has improved out of sight, what will become of him as a player?

I'm still used to seeing him run around aimlessly giving off terrible handballs to space or to the opposition. he now has an awesome run and carry and seems to blend right in to our running midfield when going forward. even at training he is looking like he has real flow and knows what he is doing.

Just wondering how everyone thinks the kid will end up in future years?

Still worried about his disposal and decision making. Has been good with running through the middle lately though. Looks much better than he did on half back at the start of the year. Really needs to improve the above short comings though to ensure he doesn't become a depth player.

Have liked him quite a bit over the past month or so.
Where the hell is he actually lining up nowadays? Wing? Tagging onballers?

Wherever it is, the fact he is getting it more around the centre gives him some more space to operate in which is a good thing.

He actually has a penetrating kick when he goes long too... :thumbsu:

He's lining up on the wing when Jackson has been in, otherwise he took on the 1# tagging role.

It seems Dimma's game plane and structure is assisting a few of our players that used too not have a clue, I guess when you know where teammates are going to be and where they're going to run to it makes decision making a lot easier.

TW couldn't put together a worthwhile plan and structure in 5 years, while Dimma has solid beginnings in place in his first season, it's probably saved a few of these blokes careers.

Well Dimma just gave him a huge wrap on AW. Said his ability to find the ball and place it forward to the right option was fantastic. So much for those who say his decision making is ordinary. Also Leigh Mathews backed him by saying he is a terrific and much improved player.

Defensive winger/defender seems his go for now, he's done well in that role, was never going to be a consistent enough goalsneak.

Suspect he and Connors will help form the core of our 2nd/3rd midfield rotations longer term.

Have always liked this one, but I was desperately worried that he would lose heart under Wallace. Has bounced back very nicely (starting with the Rawlings catetaker period) and looks well suited to a run-with role or outside mid role. But I still think he has plenty to offer on the HFF as well.

with lids, newy and connors in the back half, we can push edwards into the mid as an outside player..he has some great qualities with his pace and agility, quite evasive through heavy traffic, handles the ball clean and wins plenty of possies on a consistent basis...needs to continue to hone his disposal but well on the way to becoming a good player

Was always going to struggle as a small defender, not accountable enough and to small.

on the wing however hes excelling, hes great in traffic and is one of our really only viable outside players with Lids at half back and tambling often struggling.

Im seeing a permeant spot on our wing for him in the future, just needs work on disposal, what i have liked is his increase in defensive pressure.

I always thought it was just a matter of maturing for shane edwards. Has shown promise throughout his career but always seemed to look too weak for AFL. This year when he rocked up with some added muscle i thought he might be a little better and has been a lot better. I think as he gets bigger and more experience, he will be a gun for the club.

thats good because we may not be able to draft all these guns with GC and GWS in the drafts so players like him and Connors standing up is a real bonus.

Interesting. Chooses to smother than go for a tackle. That shows some guts. Given his size (even tho he has beefed up) maybe thats not a bad thing to smother.
For us he is 5th/equal 2nd for tackles.
Jack, Tuck, Jackson and Tambo all on 49 and Edwards on 48

1st for running bounces
1st for Smothers
4th for contested possessions.
6th for 1%ers
5th inside 50s,

No wonder Dimma was singing his praises yesterday.

Bottom line is neither Edwards nor Ward were better when the board was demanding 'finals or else.'

It annoys me that the same bloke who put the acid on a list full of pensioner veterans and green kids with not much in between is still our president and has come out of the whole era smelling like roses according to an overwheming number of supporters, while our coaching and recruiting staff from that era cop all the blame for his board's delusions and demands.

Lay the blame for these things at the feet of the man whose fault it was far more than any other - Gary March and his merry bunch of flip-flop stooges.

I think a year or two ago, players like Newman and Lids stood out because they were terrific kicks. Now that we've really focused on that area in recruiting last few years, players with sub-standard kicking skills stand out more against the likes of Lids, Newy, Tambo, Cotch, Martin, even Whitey and Jacko when they get onto one. For mine Edwards stands out a bit because of his constant hospital balls into half forward. If he can work in his long kicking we'll have a player on our hands for sure.
