If you were to take a more pessimistic view, having our two power forwards with injury concerns and the other go-to forward untried is a bit of a concern.

Vards didn't appear to be hampered by his issues late in the year, so that's encouraging. Let's hope the extended rest is what Hawk needed as he will be more important to our structure than ever before. Kersto has the talent and deserves to be given his time in the sun.
Vards missed the last home and away game of the year because of injury issues. He was still hampered by the hip massively in the finals.

I didn't mean honorable as in doing well against his direct opponent but he was honorable as in he didn't get pushed aside easily like you would expect of a kid 20yrs, 196cm and only 92kg's in weight.

No doubt Brown would be stronger than he looks but I didn't see anything at all in the VFL nor AFL which suggested he's going to be able to beat a forward with genuine strength in a wrestling duel.
He doesn't play that way, not yet at least and he will need to use his reach in order to beat key forwards.
Why do people assume Brown is stronger than he looks? If it looks and smells like a duck then the most probable outcome is that it is a duck.

We are completely buggered if one of our key forwards are injured this year. We have zero back up. Lonergan is possibly the only other key forward on the list as backup. Lucky that Hawkins, Vardy and Kersten aren't injury prone hey

At a push Taylor can go forward, I know it leaves our backline short but we still have Lonergan, Rivers and maybe Brown down there. Hamling may step up.

He just doesn't have as much confidence as we would like. Few people would understand how injuries can affect that.
We saw how Hawkins lacked confidence to back himself in a contest early in his career. And he turned it around. It's not too late for Mitch to do the same.
Mitch does have a private schoolboy look about him though which is what makes people think he's timid (which he isnt).

I work with a guy whose son has played AFL for the last few years. And suffered a shoulder reconstruction at one point. We were talking about injuries for young players (about his son, nothing do to with Geelong) and he said you cannot fully appreciate the toll it takes, especially for guys trying to establish themself.

If Brown was as soft as people around here so confidently assert, there's no way he'd come back from firstly a broken leg (funny how Kelly was excused for years after he did his), then two serious shoulder injuries. If there was an inherent weakness there it would have been winnowed out years ago. Could just be he's made of sterner stuff than people give him credit for. And the club might recognise that too.

Because they wouldn't risk playing him as a key defender in the VFL if he wasn't physically capable of doing the job. Why did Dale Amos on the Geelong website only yesterday say the following:

"Due to the form of our key position guys, he got starved of opportunities in the AFL. But he performed as well as any key defender in the VFL. He finished runner-up in our VFL best and fairest, and I thought he acquitted himself really well in the few AFL games that he did play. He played quite well down here at Simonds Stadium against St Kilda. He's certainly starting to develop an ability to play on much bigger opponents. He did quite a good job on some big forwards in the VFL. If he can get bigger and stronger and build up his confidence over the pre-season, he will get the chance to establish himself a bit more as a regular AFL player."

Thought the bit about him doing “...quite a good job on some forwards....” at VFL level was damning with faint praise.

To be fair, he actually said "...quote a good job on some big forwards...".

As a summary from an assistant coach, it could be a lot worse. Interesting that he mentioned the thought he went well in the seniors this year too.

Lonergan can't play forward. He'll be lucky to get through the season as a defender. Too slow now and he wasn't a strong enough mark the first time around.

To be fair, Kersten hasn't had the injuries that Vardy or Hawkins have. Have to find out sometime what they've got.

How do you know that? Anything to base it on rather than subjective opinion?
I know from my perspective he plays in a timid fashion. Subjective i know but my eyes tell me what my eyes tell me. He needs to be harder when the ball is on the ground, and harder in one-on-one contests at AFL level.

Think the last h & a was precautionary rest and not directly related to his hip issues if I recall Snelling's comments correctly. Didn't think he was "massively" hampered in the finals. And didn't see reports following them to indicate there were massive issues. Just played poorly.

Not sure he played on many small forwards.:D

I get what you mean though and if you combine that remark with the comment he needs "to get bigger and stronger" you can see where Amos is coming from.

Much prefer to see him in the forward half where he can make the play though.

The other aspect of course is that he is still a very inexperienced player. He's only played 20-odd senior games. The expectations of him have been wildly unrealistic.

It's interesting. They could well figure that Walker and Kersten need senior games, and are only forwards, whereas Brown can develop at either end. The thinking could easily be if he plays as a third tall defender and occasionally centre half back next year, he can get 10-15 games at the same time that Vardy gets 20 and Kersten gets 10-15. Certainly logical when you look at it that way.

For mine during his brief opportunities in the ones he's looked far more comfortable in the forward half than the back half. He was recruited as a forward. Played nearly all his football as a forward. Reads the game better as a forward where he can make the play.

Hope he can cut it in the back half as it does seem that's where the powers that be think he offers the most value.

Great points.
Pity your generosity regarding virtually the exact points does not extend to Varcoe- 3 shoulder reconstructions, 2 foot fractures,
and a fracture dislocation of his ankle before he joined us!

I dont think I've ever said any player was soft because , as you have said, they do overcome a heap to play. But overcoming injury is a different hardness to playing tough. His style is not what Id call aggressive or assertive. Anybody that plays footy's no tub of warm butter , anybody that thinks they are is misguided.

Cant say I rate these post season reviews. Its almost like winning the B&F in the VFL then getting delisted.

There will probably be a few who will have minor cleanup surgery over the summer in prep for next year.

True, and most will have already had it done.

Agree with the bolded, how ever IMO his games in the Ones this year probable cost him a spot on someone else's list next year by showing he's not up to the task, had he stayed in the Twos where he preforms well he'd have drawn some interest but not now.Still a long way from getting a regular gig at the Cats too.
Put it this way If Brown gets 18 games next year,we get pick 6 in the 2014 draft.
