If anyone can accurately predict the Round 1 lineup they should seriously get a prize. Going to be so tough to pick the spots.

And that is what will make next season so interesting. At least for some of us.

VC said: I think Walker is basically a bigger bodied Kingsley. I didn't mind Kent, but I don't think he'd get in our side.

Leads like Kent, runs like Kent.
Moves sideways like Kent, lacks lateral vision like Kent, and has the turning circle of the queen mary just like......you guessed it........Kent.

So good luck to him for getting elevated, I hope he goes on to develop into a player.

Interesting comparison. Kent Kingsley played over 100 games for an average of just over 2 goals per game. Walker will be doing well to match that!

I always regarded KK as a lead and mark forward and very good at that, in his earlier years.
Walker is a bit different I reckon and the differences I see give me some hope for the kid.
Walker has a big tank and ability to hit packs hard, I don't remember KK showing those traits/abilities.

There are no guarantees about Walker but if he just matches the game tally of KK he will be a very valuable list member.

Gets really good in about 4 years, dont worry. Perfect age gap, trust me.

41 goals in 2013. Highest goalkicking accuracy of any AFL/VFL player to kick more than 20. (78.8%)

Chris Scott: "We're hoping that Shane can be a permanent member of our AFL forward line."

I so wish he would be that third tall forward that would be so useful to us.

I am not so convinced as others. Sure he has had injuries that have derailed his chances of playing seniors - but from the games I have seen he does not have the intensity he needs to be a player yet in the seniors.

Lovely kick, seems quick enough for his size but hasn't sold me yet. That VFL GF loss made me think there were a few players I had hopes for that I now question. Any player or team can have a bad day and we did that day - nut some players did not show a whimper when it mattered most. Throw yourself at the ball, crash a pack, do a hard tackle - do something. For me Walker did this and GHS never stopped trying although beaten - but Kersten like many others seemed to give up without a whimper. I am sure he was trying but you just have to do something different - have a real go even if it fails. That's what concerned me.

Hope I am wrong and he gets fitter and adds and edge to his game.

Being a bit harsh on him I feel Jon, If your opinion of him is based solely on the VFL grand final given he injured his knee early on and was hobbling for the rest of the game.
Was impressed with his skill and goal kicking in the few games I have seen him play.

I was disappointed in Kersto in the GF too. We can all have bad days but effort is a non negotiable and I thought he lacked in that area on the day. However, it has been suggested here he was injured. If so, that goes some way to accounting for his poor form. He had plenty who were also disappointing when it counted and when it counted as well

Just wish some here would back off a bit. Kersto has talent but it hasn't been tested at AFL level yet. So don't let us get ahead of ourselves. And don't load him up with unnecessary pressure.

Did not realise he was injured - if so I wonder how bad it was. Perhaps that minimised his impact.

Still if on the field in a GF you just have to go 100 % - and if you cannot then sometimes better off not being on the field and better off having a 100 % fit player on the field instead. But I do not know what choices we had on the day. It just didn't look that good.

Returning to a quote from the original article... "Kersten booted 41 goals in 13 VFL games this season, but his progress was hindered by hip, pelvis and hamstring injuries."

Decent output from a young bloke over an injury interrupted season. Would love to see him get a clear run at it, and revisit the topic after he's strung a few senior games together.

Take you point on board. However, if I accept that, you have to accept that it was one game and in that game he hurt his knee early and played the rest of the game out impaired as a result of it.

Given he gets selected, Im sure he will have his ups and downs. I just hope that he is given the consistency in selection to be able to build confidence and get acceptance that he is good enough ( form permitting of course). He won't win the Coleman or kick 30 goals this year ( as nice as it would be). Hawkins took a long time and I see no reason why Shane will be too different. Instant gratification is a wonderful thing however sadly inappropriate.
Give him time, he be very good for us.

All I'll say JD, is if you wrote off every player because of one bad game we would have an empty list. People have very short memories. Every single player in the senior team, every single premiership player current and retired, has had absolute stinkers at some point (the 2008 Grand Final comes screaming to mind, or the 2012 Elimination Final, or the 2013 Qualifying Final). They weren't written off. I'm betting that most would look the other way and refuse to acknowledge them. Only these young upstarts have bad games - Jimmy and Kel and Boris never did that. Sorry but yes they did. Kelly came back from his broken leg in 2005 and had 2 full seasons of good to average football before being told to respect the game more. Enright was solid and unobtrusive for a long, long time before 2007. Bartel played reserves in 2003 after debuting in the seniors and winning a Rising Star nomination.

For me Kersten is like Walker and Brown and Caddy and Smedts and Murdoch and every other player under 50 games - it is far too soon to tell. With Kersten even moreso as he's yet to play a senior game.

We won 3 premierships because the club had patience. We as supporters unfortunately have none.

"Shane is still a week or so away with a sore knee... Will be ok for Melb in Alice .."

Glad to see he is close, but disappointed he is not ready. Would have lived to have seen him Wed….

Get well Kersto!

Hamling or perhaps Brown to play forward instead?

Prior to about a month ago I would have said no way. But given that we know Brown was working with Taylor at training........as a forward.......hard to say. I guess it would show how keen they are to have a third tall forward, if Brown does that in the pre-season before Kersten is available.

Find out soon enough I guess.

Few photos see him tussling with Hawk - as a back; multi-skilled is Brown

I think you may have missed my main point about Kersten Partridge. I am not writing him off after one game. What I tried to say is that in the most important game of his career he just did not look that interested or hard enough at the contest for me. In other words his attitude when he really needed to be tough, hard and do something he did not. Now this may have been partially attributable to his injury - which I was not aware of.

But take Walker that day. He lifted when it mattered. He smashed packs, took grabs and kicked goals. Guys who perform when the team most needs them are gold. Easy to play well in a really good team that nearly wins all its games and heavily scores against teams. The fact that Kersten kicked so many goals is that he had a heap of opportunities because the ball was down there so often.

Now he may turn out to be a really good player - I cannot predict the future. But what I saw on that big day did not thrill me. You can have all the skill in the world but you have to the right attitude - to will yourself into the contest. That is why we love Selwood so much.

And when I see a player drop their head rather than get angry and go harder to make up for a poor effort - that concerns me. Effort and attitude are key essentials for a player at elite level - even on a bad day - especially on a bad day.

I repeat here what I wrote - he did not show the intensity I would expect of a player that is playing a GF. Not that he would not make it - not that I have written him off - but this fact concerned me.

I think that is fair enough.

Take you point on Walker as an example of effort. He does not stop trying in any position where he can make it to the contest.

However, Kersten, on THAT day, was hurt and kept playing thru it as best he could. So yes, on THAT day, next to Walker who was doing his thing, Kersten looked down.

It's kind of like having you type your posts one handed and comparing your speed to a legal stenographer and us criticizing you for being slow.

Makes no sense.

I didn't like the lack of intensity either, but I put it down to injury as the explanation was given, he's not a Pods replacement imo, Vardy's that, I see his role as the third tall/med that can apply tackle pressure and provide a marking target, heck he can kick em from 60+ so he's definitely got the potential.
Time to put potentials to rest and see what he's really got, another year bigger and stronger so it's his time to shine.

Although not playing this week, Jordan Murdoch, I see him as a serious contender for that same role, he's one that's also a big lump of a boy, fast and as big as Kersten, ready to permanently move into senior ranks.
