Gary Lyon showed some footage on FootyClassified of Kersten in the middle of the ground with SIX Melbourne players near him goal side of him. 10 seconds later, Kersten runs into an open goal with Gary wondering where the other six were.
Gary also echoed what Dan Menzel had said. Gaz said he thinks Kersten doesn't know how good he is. That he looks like he doesn't want to get in Tommy's way, and perhaps Selwood could take him aside and tell him to be as good as he can be.

Not if he doesn't do the defensive acts which are one of his strengths it won't. A solid pre-season in 2015 and we will see a much better more rounded player. Just 2 goals a game won't cut it this year either.
2 goals a game absolutely cuts it as the second key forward behind Hawkins.

Another solid week , and chance for a RS nom? Another award biased towards mids?
Nine possessions and 2 goals isn't RS worthy surely.

Have 9 possessions and keep Buddy to 15. Sure.
Have 9 and kick 5, sure. (Just)

It took Hawkins a good year or three to break out- I remember coaches and teammates saying how good he was at training but just didn't have the confidence to use his body during the games as much as they knew he could. I have a feeling that Kersten won't take as long as Tom - his improvement will just sneak up on us :)

I understand he is out of contract at the end of year, why is it taking so long for the cats to re-sign him?

Would love him at Freo.
No idea what's going on behind closed doors.
He got a one year deal at the end of last year.

was it against the Doggies or Lions?
There was one against the Dogs at Whitten oval where he just went up 50 inches mid-air, hung up there for a second and had enough time to kiss the football before landing back down to earth.

Not sure Bobby , but I'd sure like to see it !!;)

My guess, and it is a guess, is that he was waiting to get a go this year. With Pods gone the spot was there for the taking and then he was out for 10 weeks with the knee ( which is fully recovered by the way). He signed the 1 yr extension to see what happened this year. He wanted to play ( fair enough but was not ready). Now he is fit and has done the work we are all seeing the results.

My guess is that he and his agent will wait to see how the year pans out ( which should be quite well for him) and then go back to the club and ask what is going on ( if the club does not get on the front foot first). I expect him to wait until seasons end as quite frankly his numbers go up every week he plays so why lock something in early and leave money and time on the table.. which makes sense to me.

As for going back to WA, there is still a bit resentment there that both WC and Freo bypassed him in the draft, more than once I believe. Not saying that is never to be gotten over but right now I'd say he is here and happy.

And with all that said and all due respect, piss off he is ours :D

West Coast over looked him twice and Freemantle three times. If that's not a vote of no confidence I don't know what is.

Exactly. So when all their fans come sniffing now wanting him back I know for a fact he is not a fan of going back. Now that could change as all things do but if Geelong put a solid offer multi year (say 3 yr) deal in front of him saying you we want you and Hawk to be targets #1 and #2 I see no reason for him not to like it… and like it a lot.

It was smart by Shane to sign a one year deal last year just to make sure if he spent another year toiling as the best in the VFL, he had options.
If it wasn't for his injury he probably would have been playing AFL all season, and both Shane and the club can see he has a future in our seniors team, and I would suspect they would be well into talks now.

If Shane was homesick he could have arranged to leave last year. He stayed for a year just to make sure he was going to have an opportunity.

At the time he said:

"I'm keen to stay here and I love Geelong. I'm Victorian-born. We moved to WA when I was about five, so I've got a lot of family here.
"I'm very keen to stay here and have a good career."

I suspect the decision to move Pods on was primarily to give Vardy the CHF possie . Probably though they also saw the need to find room for Kersten who was ready (except for injury) at the start of this year.

Yeah I think they have always wanted a three pronged attack where Tom stays closer to goal, Vardy roams and someone like Kersten can go in between/do both.

Stymied somewhat, but I think it's easy to see how that forward line would work ... and then if Menzel gets back ...

:)

it's amazing that after all these years (nearly 2 decades) since his retirement, he is still viewed as one of the most exciting footballers of them all. Seems as though his highlights reel never grow old.
You just wonder why the AFL don't try everything in their power to get him to agree on an exclusive 2 hour documentary as it would gather incredible TV ratings.
I'll check the computer and see which mark your eliding to.

I remember I rang McGuire on mmm when I was bored on a good Friday back in about 98.
And I said to him. I don't care there is no good Friday game, but why can't we have specials on past players, great marks etc. to fill the void.

And he said "you are correct, we don't respect our past champions enough, and we don't show enough footage of them"
It would be fair to say he's nothing to change that. Even with a media company he has run for 25 years.

I've read a lot of posts on here about Kersten and the VFL watchers giving him plenty of tickets.

And wow, what a great talent we have unearthed.

Its so good to have a proper option other than Hawkins.

Look forward to seeing this guy running around in the hoops and kicking bags for a long time.

VC , for a start its Rising Star , not rising ball winner or whatever. What would Hawkins average? Not sure but to me , for a key forward , possessions are not key. He as kicked multiple goals in each game ... for a young forward thats "potential" rising star" stuff because its not just one game they take into account

If that ever happened... :drunk: OMG

Yeah I know it's changed a bit.
Used to really be focussed on a standout game. So if he kicks 4 or 5 this week you may get your wish.

But really, we don't want an RS nom. His contract price will go up :p

Yes , but I think thats going up anyway.
And I think its more standout game at the start of the year , and the year gets on a player who has been good but missed may get nominated in a makeup week. Menzel went weeks of good performance before getting picked.

Shane Kersten - at an average of 2.2 goals per game - is ranked 14th in the competition.
Not bad for a bloke that is not big or fast enough to play as a forward for us…

And he's just getting started….

Oh, and Balmey…. just nod, say yes and get it signed.

Go Kersto!

sorry to quote you again daz but just on that, he's got a rather unique physique doesn't he.
Very compact and broad with strong legs. Podsiadly had a similar shape but a little taller and we have seen Kersten catch a few defenders off guard already with his body strength but speed in the open space.

quote away mate….:D

His core and balance seems really good too and we all know the last bloke that played up forward for us that had great core strength, balance and good hips.
There is miles between shane and him, but its a great start.

You could really see the balance in one of his goals he got against the Dogs I think when he was running back to the ball after it got goalside running with the defender and Kersto was at full stretch and pace and off balance as the Dogs defender went down but Shane stayed up, got the pill and kick it.

Was great and to see the body hold up also a fantastic thing. I can also see him doing a lot better at the one on one marking thing when he will be able to use his body strength to hold out defenders and protect the drop zone to take the mark.

Go Catters

A bizarre move that could cost us the premiership. Even if the strategy was to move to Vardy, Hawkins and Kersten as the main 3, given that all three are injury prone with two carrying major injury concerns into the offseason you would think they would want a back up key forward in the team in Pods. One of the dumbest list management moves made in a long time.
