Delisted Shane Savage

I'm loving the Sav right now. Looks a long term replacement for Joey.

He struggled big time playing small fwd - but lets be honest - small fwd is a specialist position and many struggle there. Best left for guys like Templeton.

Should get 100 games for the Saints from Sav from now on.

If you want some good reading head on over to the hawks board and read the McEvoy trade thread.

There's a couple of people that seem realistic in that we are probably gonna win this trade, but then there are some idiots including one guy who said Hartung had showed just as much as Dunstan this year. I tried pointing out a few things but gave up after a couple of people said Dunstans only doing well because we are s**t and he gets cheap possies off half back.

Absolutely loving Savages' last month, that boot on him is insane. Him and Dunstan were clearly in our best on the weekend and if that continues I'll be stoked with the trade.

Yep, that's why Dunstan is going to win the Rising Star... because he's getting cheap possies off half back...

Vs Richmond: 26 disposals @80%, 2 clangers, 7 marks, 2 tackles
Vs Carlton: 25 disposals @80%, 1 clanger, 1 mark, 4 tackles, 2 goals

Thats elite stats. Well done sav

Savage is starting to become one of those players where when you see them get the football you just know some quality is going to come out of it. Whether he runs and carries it 50metres+ or a really piercing kick into the 50 you can bet its going to be advantageous.

Like a more accurate Grammy. He's a player we missed jason Gram. A bit like Collingwood with out Shaw we are struggling to get as much run and carry happening from deep in the backline. Gilbert and Roberton are both capable but are injured and Goddard and dal could both play out of the backline to set up. Savage and Fisher really helped make us a more clean team on Saturday. Savage and Shenton both seem happy to be attacking backmen and run a certain amount of dangerously creative play. I like the way we played last week. It was like pre Lyon days.

Since he came back in round 14, in the last 5 games he's had 120+ possessions including 23 inside 50's - from the HBF - when did we last have anyone with numbers like that. Great pick up if he can stay at anywhere near that level.

Plus he seems to make the right decisions when delivering into the F50. Either a pass to a free player and if that doesn't exist, its wide to a contest on the boundary line. Not turnovers in the middle of the ground

Gram was one of my greatest disappointments ever in a RWB jumper. The night that Goose broke his leg, Grammy went head to head against Judd, who was at the absolute peak of his powers. In my memory it was a fantastic battle, with Gram hurting Judd as much as vice versa. I walked away from that game thinking that we had an absolute jet on our hands.... sadly he only rarely reached that standard again & yes one of those days was on the biggest stage of all.

Having said that, Gram frustrated more than excited & IMO is another in the long line of players who didn't play to their potential.

I have great hope that Savage will be a much more consistent, determined & overall a better player than Gram. His disposal is already a massive upgrade on Grammy's floaters.

I like Sav. I like him a lot.

Very much looking forward to seeing the tracer-bullet boys, Webster & Savage, in action off half-back together next year.

Lace out perfection for Roo, Stanley & McCartin... :D ... My only concern is for the health of the webbing on their hands ;)

"including 23 inside 50's"

The amazing thing about that figure is that Webster, Gwilt and Shenton between them have had just over 30+ I50's for the whole season (about 30+ games in total)

Shows how badly we lack run from the backline.

I liked what I saw from Hartung when he played this year, but seriously?

Dunstan? Cheap possessions?? Off half back??? As opposed to Hartung's stand out game so far which came in a 145 point win????

Geez some people are stupid

Would he even have one handball receive to his name all year? He lives on the bottom of packs!

He's our version of Selwood and Wines through their first seasons and the stat comparisons back that up. Hopefully he becomes as good as Selwood is now.

I ventured over to the Hawks thread only to see someone say he was "a slower version of Daniel Rich" before I needed to slowly back out. It's amazing the opinions people form without truly watching the game.

Anyway, Savage. I was pretty disappointed by his efforts earlier in the year but his form turnaround has been fantastic. Even though I had him out of the best 22 I still had the trade as a win/win so with him firing it's making me a very happy man!

I think it's just sanity preservation. You always try to find the positive in your trade and the negative the other way. When hartung ran amok I was still trying to justify how much better off we were. I did it with Ball leaving too. I thought Armo would take up the slack when Ball was leaving. I know Hawks fans that are seriously disappointed in their end of the trade so far but another is still trying to bag out Savage even though he told me at the time savage would become a gun at the Saints.

Last round Savage named in the best on,
Dunstan been at it all year.
Mcevoy struggling to get a game for the hawks.

Pardon herald sun?
What disastrous trade?

Savage is playing much better quality of footy. This week he was also able to play further up the ground since our pressure was so good, so it was almost as though he got to play a little time on the wing.

I am however a little concerned that Richo talked about him early season as having been recruited to play small forward and offer run into midfield (basically as Watters thought TDL would offer). Then Savage himself said he wanted to play MF and that was part of his wanting to leave Hawks - more MF opportunity.
Now I'm sure having a sit-down from the playing/leading group might have changed Savage's own attitude, making him appreciate any best 22 position rather than wish for a specific slot.

But it concerns me that we thought Savage was a forward solution, we're actually playing him down back, and now have a hope he ends up where he wanted to be after all (wing). That means we still have a gap for a Fwd/Wing that we thought we had filled.
Same with Bruce - recruited as a defender, plays possibly his best game as a forward. Are we actually now then still looking for a new CHB?

Feel a little like we're recruiting good talent, then making mistakes in assessing them or misunderstanding their best avenues to help the team.

He's been good

Much easier playing HB than Wing....

Are we looking at how his opponent performs?

Played on Jack Martin - 1.1 from 17 possessions, 2 marks, 1 tackle (DT 60; SC 94)

Savage - 26 possessions, 7 marks, 0 tackles (our highest possession gatherer of the night) (DT 86; SC 104)

richo has made mention of how his opponent has performed. apparently done well in that regard. i'd say thats the key difference between him and others who have played half back

Absolutely stoked with the way he's turned his form around, he was looking like a dud recruit for a while but is now one of our best players.

Our McEvoy trade was a success anyway due to us getting Dunstan and Acres with the draft picks we got but with Savage coming good we're now massive winners from that trade.
