Shane Watson- Australia's Highest Paid Cricketer

Watson needs to piss off. Complete waste of space, nobody in their right mind would think that this ******* is one of the 11 best players in australia.

the reason why australia won't win this comp is because our batting is stacked with streaky, hit or miss guys like warner, watto and maxwell.

I'd say India (apart from Kohli) and NZ (Williamson) have similar. McCullum is amazing but he is still relatively hit and miss.

Australia probably will win the world cup, mostly due to our bowling attack.

However, Watto/Warner/Maxwell are probably our best 3 ODI batsmen.

Probably not fair to single Watson out for criticism when the entire batting effort was terrible.

Watson's dismissal annoyed me the most, what was he trying to do there? hit it for six, then maybe try and hit it harder/higher. It went straight to the bloke in the deep.

Others like Finch (went for one too many but we know what he was trying to do), maxwell & Marsh (both played on hanging the bat out but that can happen early) smith werent great shots but watson was set and then plays a dumb shot (maybe pressure of not keeping the scoring going got to him, but again another score in the 20-40 mark)

no chance of us winning the world cup. yes, bowling looks good on paper, but ODIs are a batsman's game...if you don't get enough runs, you don't win. our batting lineup doesn't look as good, its all-or-nothing with these guys.

watto looks hopeless batting at 3 . warner has never been a consistent opener, there is a reason why he averages 32. finch is in decent form, we can bank on him but our top order just isn't getting it done, which doesn't bode well for the knockouts...when the batting lineup is under twice as much pressure. hopefully our top 3 can get some big scores in upcoming games.

what irritates me is that we're doing this even tho we have the ability to make changes. if watto is playing like shit, we don't need to carry him. u could easily bat smith at 3 and the team wouldn't miss a beat, but this team doesn't look like it wants to make any changes, which is frustrating.

smith is australia's best batsman, he could have won us the world cup if he batted at 3

Faulkner has to come back remember. He will most likely take Watson or Marsh's spot. If it's Watson, Smith will likely move up to 3.

It was extremely frustrating the way Watson got himself out after doing the hard work.

faulkner would replace mitch marsh. we definitely miss his batting.

if it was upto me, i'd play:

Finch
Warner
Smith
Clarke
Maxwell
Haddin
Faulkner
Johnson
Starc
Cummins
Hazlewood

this batting lineup doesn't inspire confidence (maxwell is a number 8 batting at 5 here), but smith and clarke at 3/4 could bat most of those middle overs and set it up for the big hitters like maxwell and faulkner. with smith playing 3, at least we have 2 reliable top 3 batsmen.

and 4 fast bowlers gives us a chance of winning even if the batting fails

Smith has played 2 horrendous innings this World Cup.

The shot Watson played to get out was poorly executed, and he hit it high on the bat. He was perfectly entitled to be trying to hit a rare long hop from Vetorri for 6, given the match situation at the time. We were 1-80 off 1o odd overs and Watson had looked completely untroubled, you can't blame him for the middle orders inability to consolidate an excellent start.

I'm in no way blaming any individual for that innings. And I don't think Watson should be dropped for one innings. Unfortunately his last 18 months have been poor and he needs to make runs ASAP if he should keep his spot.

He had a big opportunity to make those runs on Saturday but threw his wicket away. And he seems to get caught in the deep fairly often playing similar shots.

he has got out thwat way at Test level far too many times and its unforgivable.

Getting out that way in an ODI is par for the course.

I'm not so sure why people are surprised that Watson is our highest paid cricketer, and more to the point why they care given that half of the money comes from his IPL contract so it's not Australian supporters who are (indirectly) coughing up the money for most of his contract.

His IPL contract was always going to be huge because he is still a good short form player, although he is well out of form in ODI's. He is also one of the biggest names in world cricket which is a huge component when a players worth to the IPL is decided.

He is holding on to his spot for dear life in both test and ODI's (don't know about T20's, and don't really care) but the facts are he is in all three international teams, and that when these contracts were signed his position was a lot more secure than it is now. On that alone it should be no surprise that he is one of the highest paid on CA's books too.

Agree. I am not surprised at all. 'Highest paid' is not synonymous with 'best' or 'currently most in form'.
