Shannon Byrnes

He was very good in 2009/2010,but before that he was a frustrating player who just couldn't quite execute what he needed to do. In 2009 and 2010 he really pulled the finger out and did the requisite work. This enabled him to have more energy, which in turn meant that he could make the most of his modest skills. All credit to him for doing that. Unfortunately now his series of injury issues have prevented that same level of work being executed and subsequently his form has dipped. Will be at best a marginal fringe player this year, but maybe if he can dodge injuries and put in a massive effort can have one last roll of the dice. Somehow though given that he is starting to age, and the improved general level of fitness of competitors, I think he is unlikely to ever capture those heights again.

I thought Byrnes would be a good fill in player for us this year - a transition year. Thought he would get over the injuries and play ok this year.

Cannot see him replacing Smedts or Guthrie - the two newest members of the team.

In a year when we needed depth he unfortunately has not been able to provide this for the club. Shame for him and the club.

The team has introduced many new players this year, which is great for their maturity.

Byrnes is running into form and deserves to be upgraded.
He has a mature head and provides run which we sadly miss.

He could replace Motlop has been great but appears to be tiring.

played his best game that i recall at Subi against freo kicking a bag of 4 i think it was and tore it up. If he does get let go, i will always appreciate his efforts in the final quarter of the 09 GF. Big part of getting us over the line that day.

Nothing against Shannon but there comes a time when you are either a mature main stay or older player who could can play a fringe role but also prevent getting games into your future players.

For around two season he really did play a good role for us , the 09 GF is something a lot of much better players than he would love to have on their CV but now due to our state of rebuild we have to be tactical in who gets games. It may cost you short term , in some eyes its tanking but to me its the same logic that kept Arrnott , Mench etc in the two when playing well.

He would have to present better value than the likes of McDonald & Power. I hope he gets a lucrative offer form them and finishes his career with some dollars in the pocket.

Completely agree... seems a bit odd ripping into him. Sure we have probably seen his best, sure he wasn't the most important player in those seasons but the man is a dual premiership player for the Cats show some respect.

Clearly he's done with us, which makes me a bit sad as I was always a Byrnes fan. That said, you have to give CS credit, we all want him to, and recognise for our future that he needs to back the kids, well he's obviously doing it if a clubman of Byrnesy's calibre is in the 2's.

Hopefully he has a good vfl finals series and can find another club, he'll only be 29 next year and I definitely think he can still play at the level. GWS could do a lot worse to replace Brogan Power etc.

Mostly everyone had something to say about Byrnes, but, he has tried hard and I am sure if given the chance of 100 games and a premiership, we'd all jump at it.
I really hope he gets a new club where he can get a chance at the big league, as I think he won't get much more of an opportunity with the Cats. They need to
push for youth to bridge some gaps in the next few years.
