Might be on his last legs at Geelong though....still....two premiership medals isn't too shabby

He was very good in the last quarter but it was a cameo, not a headline performance.

With a glut of small forwards who can play a bit of midfield as well (even considering Varcoe and Menzel's absence), Byrnes' form hasn't warranted selection so far.....

And that is the big problem for Byrnes as I see it. The greatest amount of competition for positions on the ground at Geelong is in the area of small forwards.
And Chris Scott may wish to try a new recruit like Shredder or the like in the future ahead of Byrnes

Byrnes will be lost

Spot on,being proficient on both sides of your body can be the difference between playing and watching from the stands,the lack of such may see Byrnes time at the Cats come earlier than otherwise may have been the case.Certainly does nothing for his cause.

Maybe, but I never rated him. I've always put him in the "justifiably maligned" category, a bit like Blake, and Playfair

His always been a pretty average player to me, has never really done anything. Meant to have "zip" but I dont think its ever been on display that much or maybe i just dont like him.

Couldn't agree more.

Apart from a handful of good games Shagga has always had poor disposal and non-existent right foot.

I'm grateful for all he has achieved at Geelong but he can consider himself lucky to have been at the club for as long as he has.

Stuffed up an easy mark 20m out then gets a free and misses an easy goal from 15m out.

I'd have preferred to see Horlin-Smith out there, learning the game, than Byrnes' embarrassing comedy reel.

Ah, the anti-Byrnes brigade.... ho hum.

Every AFL team has its fringe-players, even the best teams. Byrnes has been one of our fringe-players for years now. As far as fringe-players go he has been very good for us.

He has had to adapt to a couple of different roles, often holding a position for a short time while a better player is out injured. Outside of 2009, he has been given stop-start chances at AFL level, so not a massive chance to develop form. Still, he has offered something when given the chance.

And by any standards, his entire 2009 season was very good. His last quarter in the 2009 GF was massive in our victory.

He has looked ordinary this season when given his chances. Injuries over the last year haven't helped his plight much. He should not be in the starting 22, and i'd say on current form some younger players have moved past him on 'the fringe'.

But the bagging he gets by keyboard warriors on here is pretty sad and unjustified.

Missed a shot big deal - he used to do that sometimes when his confidence was down and he was always getting dropped. Then in 2010 he was rated third most efficient shot on goal in the league when he kicked something like 35 goals 11 behinds. He's clearly being affected by getting ten minutes here and ten minutes there, vfl one week, sub the next and so on.

So he missed one because he's not confident - crucify him for that. I think a few others kicked points today too.

Try comparing his stats for one quarter to some of the others who played a full game.

Yes, we had virtually no shining lights today, but unfortunately when you're a fringe player and Shannon is, you need to be taking your opportunities.

I used to think he was a bit of a scapegoat but come on he needs some time back in the reserves to find some form and confidence. With the heat out of the game yesterday he made some big mistakes. Mistakes that even a first or second year player shouldn't really make.

wow, motlop no peripheral vision. i guess you're not tuning in when shannon isnt playing.

they were BOTH hungry for the goal and didnt talk. it was one of a few plays that summed up the game for us.

that's how I saw it too....but did Motlop call?

Nevertheless it was an example of where we are at right now....pretty awful.
