SUNS EYE HAWKS DUO
Gold Coast is circling a pair of Hawks champions, with Shaun Burgoyne and Jarryd Roughead in the Suns’ sights, reports the Herald Sun.

Roughead, a four-time premiership Hawks forward, on Tuesday announced he’d retire at season’s end, with a farewell game locked in against the Suns, coincidentally, in Round 22.

Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew has previously admitted he attempted to coax former Hawks teammate Roughead north, without success, for 2019 in a similar player-mentor role.

But the Herald Sun revealed on Tuesday night the Suns had been in “direct contact” with Roughead about a potential off-field role that would focus on mentoring the club’s young guns.

A two-time All-Australian, Coleman Medallist and former club captain, Roughead has also attracted interest from St Kilda in a similar off-field role that would include list management duties.

The Suns’ interest in Roughead comes weeks after they officially declared their desire to recruit Burgoyne, who remains out of contract beyond this season, in a playing capacity.

Hawthorn would be happy for Burgoyne to keep playing at the club, but the Suns are hoping their offer — reportedly long-term that would include an off-field role — will tempt him.

The Hawks and Burgoyne are set to discuss the latter’s playing future at the club at season’s end.
Looks like we're still chasing Burgoyne as a player and Roughead for a coaching role. It's very likely we're going to be given Darwin as a part of our academy zone later this year and I think that would appeal to Burgoyne as he was born in Darwin and is passionate about giving back to his community.

Shocked if he leaves. Hawthorn through and through and would and would back himself to get another year in 2021. His kids are a bit older now and oldest in secondary school....bigger ask to move them at this time.

Footy comp for teenagers can't be strong up there so better he stays (no bias) 😄

I think he's more likely to stay at Hawthorn than leave but there are certainly some benefits to joining the Suns. He would have the security of knowing he'll have ongoing employment for at least four years and can move into a new career path, will probably be paid quite a bit more to come here and can get involved in the developmental side of things in his hometown of Darwin.

As for his kids, the pathway for juniors in QLD and NSW has changed a fair bit over the last few years. Not only would his children have access to the Suns academy from the age of 13, but these days the academies play quite a few games in the NAB League (formerly TAC Cup) as well as games against other northern academies/Tassie/NT and the Allies representative program in the Div 1 National Championships. They also train and play senior footy in the NEAFL for the Suns reserves from a much younger age than most juniors do in VIC/SA/WA.

The point is - if his kids can play footy, it won't matter if they are living in QLD. The cream always rises to the top ala Nick Riewoldt playing local QLD footy for Southport in 2000.

JUST CALL HIM SUNSILK
Hawthorn veteran Shaun Burgoyne is close to sealing a move to the Gold Coast Suns for the next three years.

The Herald Sun’s Sam Edmund reports the 36-year-old will soon be formally announced as a Sun for 2020, while he will eventually move into a coaching role at the club.

“I’m hearing Shaun Burgoyne is very, very close to being formalised as a recruit at the Gold Coast Suns,” Edmund told SEN Breakfast.

“I’ve been told it’s a three-year deal to join the Suns and reunite with the CEO Mark Evans. There would be a coaching component involved in that as well.

“It would be a great get for the Gold Coast Suns, that’s no secret. I think it’s really, really close.”

Burgoyne broke the games record for Indigenous players during this past season, finishing on 376 matches across Hawthorn and Port Adelaide.

He played 18 games in 2019 and averaged 16.2 disposals.

Yes.. but what does his wife do? The wife is the deal breaker these days... and if she is deeply set in work and friends, etc in Melbourne then they won't be going anywhere. Also... Regarding his skids, Melbourne has better schools, not just for footy but all round education.. so regarding the kids, Wesley or Scotch college from a parents point of view... nothing on the Gold Coast could compare to these places.. they are world class schools. This is nothing against the Gold Coast.......... but people in China want to send their kids to Wesley.. any parent with the money to spend on private school fees would be choosing one of these schools.

All valid points and these are the factors Silk will have to weigh up when deciding if he wants to head north. He definitely made it clear last night that he and his family were settled in Melbourne so it's going to take a bloody good offer to entice him up here. Although, he also said he is great mates with Stewy Dew from back in the old Port Adelaide and perhaps that helps our case.

As of right now, the media seem to be suggesting he's more likely to come to us than not. Should be interesting to see how it plays out from here.

That’s underselling his wife if you don’t think she’s capable of moving and making new friends. Newsflash - lots of people move for work and make it happen. What is her line of work?

I went to a large private boarding school on the Gold Coast and we had plenty of kids sent there by international families. People in their Melbourne bubble don’t always look too far outside it but the coast is a fantastic place to grow up?
