I have been using standard clippers for a couple of years now to cut my hair usually a number 1 and to just trim my facial fair. haven't had an actual shave in years.

Is there anything I can use besides standard clippers to do the job? I am not really into having a completely shaved head.

then in all likelihood what you're using now is probably your best bet....
body hair trimmers (without the guard) may get closer on your face but using that to do your head would take too long.

i'm assuming you still don't want to shave your face to smooth with a razor and you still want to keep your hair at a shaved #1?

Yeah, I actually tried using a body hair trimmer, but it took forever on the head. I like a bit of stubble with the short hair, I don't see myself deviating from that for a while!

Thanks Rod.

Took the advice about 2 months ago and big thumbs up. Mekur 1904, Men's Biz Super Badger brush and Proraso Cream. Have just tried the free sample Geo. F. Trumper shaving cream and would probably consider purchasing in future. Also found the Personna blades pretty good.

Like Rod, I just put the cream straight on the brush after shaking a bit of water out and get a great lather every time.

I haven't watched any of the videos, and although I had a few nicks on my first shave, have pretty much had none since. I find that 2 passes give a very smooth finish. Tried a third shave against the grain a couple of times but still end up with a rash and really find it unneccessary.

What I am wondering, and to take it to the next level, has anyone considered or already have, one of those shaving mirrors that clip to the side of your bathroom mirror?

I can see how they would really assist in a clean shave and would appreciate any feedback.

so what do you find yourself shaving with more vendrell....the cream or the soap?

i still havn't gotten a soap yet but i always have a look to see if that tabac stuff comes in stock but it just doesn't happen! :|
i know i could look elsewhere but it's not the biggest concern tbh.

which do you think gives the best lather/smoothest/most razor glided shave?

also regarding blades....what have you found giving the best results?

i still havn't tried anything but the merkers....still got like 3 or so blades left in the pack!
think the next they recommend trying is derby but i'll probs just let the merkers run out first......
finishing these blades will take a LONNNNNNNGGGGGG time and by the time i'm though with them all i'll have likely saved over a hundred dollars including the initial startup with the expensive merker hd razor!

crazy savings and far superior shaves ftw!

How many men, that use a straight razor for shaving, use a shaving bowl or scuttle along with a shaving brush, to lather their face? Would anyone out there like to try a scuttle?

Would you like to try one?

The shaver uses a scuttle to produce a hot/warm or cool lather with a shaving brush.
In recent months I have been investigating how to make a good shaving scuttle, locally here in Melbourne. After a few hits and a lot of misses, so far I have produced 3, the HG Double Walled Scuttle (with a spout or with a plugged hole), HG Brush Scuttle (this is a single walled scuttle) and an HG Bowl Scuttle (either double walled or single).

The picture shows my HG Double Walled Scuttle. The inner bowl has ridges to help produce a rich lather with your brush. The outer bowl is filled with hot/warm or cool water to get a tempature just right for lathering. The spout is large enough to put under the hot water tap or to be filled from the kettle. The handle is large and can be gripped like a cup of coffee or cupped into the palm of the hand with the thumb inside the handle for a comfortable grip.

My website shows these types, www.hgpottery.yolasite.com

I've found the TOBS soap to create a better lather and is much smoother than the Proraso cream. However, I use the Proraso more only because it just squeezes into a mug which saves about 1 minute . It's probably 2 shaves Proraso to 1 shave TOBS soap.

I also want to try Tabac. Mens Biz sell out of quickly but I find myself checking their site everyday for new stuff anyway. I plan on going overseas early next year for between 4-12 months so I should really hold back on buying too many products I won't use (it's tough).

With the blades, I followed the order that Mens Biz suggested with their sample pack and I went like this:
- 3 Merkur blades to get the hang of shaving.
- 2 Derby's which I found to cut really well but only lasted for 1 good shave.
- 2 Astras which I didn't like at all. The first blade wrecked my face with rashes, bumps and pulling hair out. I thought that it might've been the individual blade so I tried another one and it was just as bad.
- 2 Treets. Fantastic blade. Cuts very well and I get 3 shaves or about 7-8 passes from 1 blade.
- 2 Feathers. Another great blade. So sharp that you don't even feel it cutting the hair. It's not until I washed my face afterwards that I felt how smooth my face was. Shaved very close to the skin in some parts which made my skin a little red but still a good blade.

Right now I'm using the remaining Treet blades. I'm going to order a sample Personna pack to give them a try before ordering a big packet of blades.

Found another site that has a good selction of blades and everything else, yet to order from there but so cant offer any kind of recomendation regarding postage times or free samples they give.

I just ordered a blade sample pack from there the other day as you can mix and match what you want=:thumbsu:

took about 2 business days to arrive.

Interesting thread.

I am in my mid-20s and have been looking for a satisfactory shaving system for my entire adult life. I used to use an electric razor but found I was too prone to razor burn/bumps. I have been using a two blade safety razor for many years but it's not ideal - the razor clogs too frequently, and getting an even shave is difficult.

I've been toying with the idea of a straight razor for a while, I'm just turned off by the inconvenience and maintenance required.

I dont think i could ever use an electric again, would rather go caveman. I thought this whole DE shaver thing was a waste of money for the first week or 2 but now i love it. They say it takes your skin a little while to get used to, so you have to to give it a chance to see if it suits.
