Shaving

With the blades, I followed the order that Mens Biz suggested with their sample pack and I went like this:
- 3 Merkur blades to get the hang of shaving.
- 2 Derby's which I found to cut really well but only lasted for 1 good shave.
- 2 Astras which I didn't like at all. The first blade wrecked my face with rashes, bumps and pulling hair out. I thought that it might've been the individual blade so I tried another one and it was just as bad.
- 2 Treets. Fantastic blade. Cuts very well and I get 3 shaves or about 7-8 passes from 1 blade.
- 2 Feathers. Another great blade. So sharp that you don't even feel it cutting the hair. It's not until I washed my face afterwards that I felt how smooth my face was. Shaved very close to the skin in some parts which made my skin a little red but still a good blade.

ahhhh thanks for that

i'm actually a little scared to move onto a sharper blade because i'm finding it hard to believe it's even possible for me to get a better shave with another blade with how perfect my skin looks after a 4 pass shave with the merkers.
not to mention the multiple extremely short/fast strokes which i have found works best and leaves my skin extremely smooth with zero iritation might actually cut me with a sharper blade

and while the merkers are still cheap as compared to the mach 3's i used to use i'd rather find one of the cheaper blades (which others seem to find superior like in your little write up) as my end resulting blade of choice since the merkers seem to be the most expensive of the lot.

maybe i will try the derbys with my next shave and rotate after every couple of blades.

was looking on that site http://www.kineticblue.com.au/

can anyone recommend any product from that site for shaving? or any other sites for that matter

take a look at post #124 in this thread.

that is EXACTLY what i bought and where i bought them from after fairly extensive research.

moderate initial startup price but future savings can simply not be ignored. (not to mention quality of shaves once you get good)

also to HG Pottery the idea sounds pretty good but not interested thanks.

What we would like is for you to STOP ****ING SPAMMING!

You've just joined the forum with the same username as your business and have just posted the same message twice in 10 hours to flog your products.
This is not the place to peddle your own commercial interests.

I understand your sentiments rod stroker, but I think he's simply trying to educate us on an accessory most of us are simply not aware of (whilst of course trying to promote his interests at the same time). In a thread about old school shaving, I think it's fair. He is trying to be helpful. I myself am not interested at this stage, but it certainly is good to know about this for future reference.

Anyway, I think I'm going to take the leap of faith and buy a couple of the products you mentioned RS.

4 passes  so is that about a 20 minute shave? i did two for a while but each time i rinsed the blade on the second pass there was nothing in it so i dont bother anymore.

Well worth trying some others, I find Treet and Red Personna's pretty close to be as sharp as Feathers, but Feathers are about twice the price. Some have differnt coatings and i think the ones that are sharper tend to flex more so the angle of the blade is finer. I tend to cut myself with a Merkur or a Derby blade rather than the others for some reason, they dont seem to glide over my face as well as the others.

mensbiz.com.au, himage.com.au, there is another which name escapes me.

It depends on what you want to spend, some of the sites have starter kits which vary in price but you can get a razor, shave soap/cream and blades all together or you can pick and choose what you want. All i have is a razor and a soap bowl and blades and that does me fine but you may get hooked on the free samples they send and end up buying those as well, i havent stopped using Trumper skin food since i first tried it.

yeh it's a pretty long process but for my thick growth i've found that it gives me the best/closest results.

i shave only once a week as well so i don't mind taking my time.

if i shaved daily i'd likely only need one against the grain pass for that perfect smootheness but after a week it takes a little more for perfection :o

Thanks for that, i checked it out. I will have to look around some more.

I currently use the gillete fusion, i got a pretty hairy face haha i shaved today and i will have hair growing tomorrow no doubt.
So my question to you is, what's the difference between the ones you showed me and what i use? much of an improvement?

Its slightly better mainly because when you start you have to actually get your technique right which results in better shaves. Then the fact that you get blades for around $0.30 as opposed to $3 or $4 is just awesome.

Bought the Merkur 1904 and a sample pack of blades from the himage and mensbiz site. Ordered on the same day, arrived at the same time just a couple of days later. Himage threw in a free gift and hand-written letter which was nice.

Just had my first shave today using a merkur blade.

A few things of note:

1. Inevitably cut myself a few times.

2. Got a very smooth shave but only after going against the grain. Found that the shave against the grain has given me a smoother shave compared to the previous 'gilette mach whatever it was' against the grain.

3. Maybe it's coz my facial hair was a couple days longer than usual today, but I found that the first stroke with the grain didn't shave the hair as closely as I'd like. A number of things may have contributed to this though:

- The type of blade
- Rinsing the blade after stroking (with the gilette I can give a few strokes and a quick rinse and all the hair will be gone, but at the end of my shave today I found that I had completely clogged up both sides of the blade so that could've interfered with how close the shave was). Looks like I've got to be more vigilent and rinse the blade more often.
- I found that the angle you orientate the razor/blade to the face really makes a difference, unlike with the gilette which automatically does it for you as the head conforms to the face. Looks like technique is also a factor, so hopefully this improves with practice.

Pretty much all of what you said here is correct. Took me a good week to get some kind of technique without cutting myself to shreds. Ive found some blades clog up a lot easier than others, must be to do with the coating on it.

JC have you tried the Sharks blades yet? Im out of feathers to compare one with but i thought the sharks were sharper than feathers

From what you've mentioned above about not getting a close shave, etc, I'd say it's more to do with your blade angle. I had a similar experience as well when I first started, but after a few more shaves you'll work it out. And maybe try with a less aggressive blade to start with, to avoid so many cuts.

Stick at it, and congrats on finally taking the plunge!

High praise indeed.

I've only shaved once with a Shark but it seemed fairly sharp. On par with the Red Personnas IMO. Still havn't tried Feathers yet so can't comment on that.

i personally think there's a monstrous improvement.
the single blade you get is just so sharp and it cuts the hairs like they are nothing.

i'm in the same boat that my facial hair just grows back so quickly.
with the mach 3 the next day i always had visible growth but with
the DE blades i get at least a full day clean face with the second day still quite nice with small growth coming out.....it's actually pretty crazy.

technique is a huge part of it all....you'd likely find that with your first 2 or 3 shaves it isn't absolutely fantastic and you might have trouble getting certain areas but over time it becomes second nature.
i've changed my style from medium/long strokes with the mach 3 to tiny little strokes with the DE and the end resulting shave is basically perfection.
like has been said multiple times it's all about hair reduction in multiple passes rather than trying to get it all off in one stroke/lather of the face.

with a mach 3 or whatever i'm not even sure it's possibly to get as close as you do with a DE regardless of amount of passes.

Question for all:

With a DE, how necessary do you find going against the grain is in order to get the closest shave possible?

personally i like to do it on the final pass just because i have spent all that time going for the perfect shave and the final against the grain pass is just that finishing touch that makes the shave last longer.

the final against the grain shave makes it so there truly is nothing but extremely smooth skin so i say very necessary.

however if you're not really a perfectionist (i am) then it may not be essential.

like i've said previously the super small quick strokes really do make the shaving very easy and i never have any irritation afterwards.

How often do you rinse the blade whilst shaving?

How often do you rinse the blade whilst shaving?

well on first pass fairly regularly....i can't put a number figure on it because it's all a matter of feel really.

on the next passes where there is less and less hair not so much but i like working with a clean looking blade.
