Curiousity got the better of me so i ordered one of these.

Under $30 and made from plastic and thin metal. Looks cheap and nasty but just about the best DE shave ive had. So easy to use, technique is nowhere near as important and the shave was a close as my Merkur. Even used a Derby in it which i really dont rate. Very simialr to shaving with a disposable but better.

Got it from himage.com.au , all their stuff seems to be a few bucks cheaper too. I read those reviews as well before i got it and thought they might be too good to be true but was pleasantly surprised.

In my first couple of months of using a DE I was getting a bit of rash on my neck. Even though I thought I was shaving lightly, I was still pushing down on the blade (due to many years of cartridge shaving).

So, probably the biggest lessons for me were finding the right direction of strokes for each pass to suit my face, and not applying any pressure to the blade.

I now actually enjoy finding the time to have a shave.

Anyone got any experience with the old Gillette's? Am now convinced after using the plastic Feather my Merkur razor is too heavy. Like the idea of an adjustable TTO but not for the $200 for a Vision.

i'm a pretty hairy ****er which sucks. fortunately the skin on my face is fairly toughened so i just shave in the shower, don't worry about foam/cream or anything (found too many of them giving me rashes). i think it's a mach 5 i just bought and it works a treat. it's been a long time since i've had a rash from shaving. i've go through about 10-15 razors a year i'd reckon.

just tried out the tabac for the first time and it's a winner that's for sure!

such a smooth, thick and creamy lather.
was incredibly slick and shaved nice and close....much closer than the proraso which seems to have a bit more room for error.
i think i prefer the soap to the creams because on second pass it's just so unbelievably effortless.
also think that soaps are probably best used after you have learned proper technique.

the blade i used was a new personna and it was my first time using that particular blade and i quite liked it.
not sure if i prefer it over the astra but i had a pretty thick beard so i'll try it again with a shorter growth and maybe with the proraso for a better gauge.

i still think the astra is the blade to beat atm though.

Probably a men's only thread this one (unless Aunt Bunny is reading ).

In the past I used to use an electric shaver but I find nothing beats the old-fashioned razor for a closer shave, albeit with Mach 3 technology. Somersets shaving oil is also a great product.

One thing with the Mach 3 Gilettes is that the gel bar seems to run out pretty quickly and I'm frequently replacing razors - and they ain't cheap for a uni student.

With an electric shaver you have to be a patient "shavee". If you want a smooth clean shave you have to shave slow and make sure you use a blow up enlarging mirror or you can miss bits and that looks lousy. I stopped wet shaving about 10 years ago because I kept getting rashes and cuts. It took a while to get used to the electric shaver but after a while your skin becomes used to it, and you improve in how to shave.

Got a couple of new razors over Xmas. One is my birth razor, an adjustable Gillette, quite timid I can use it on a sharper setting and not have any problems, I got it more for the novelty factor than to use, the other a Merkur Vision 2000. The Vision was used so it was about 1/2 the normal price but i wouldnt recommend anyone getting one, the thing is ridiculously massive, the handle is stupid, you cant grip it like you normally grip a razor, the head is much wider and the bottom part of the head on the one i have moves slightly so the blade can sometimes not be straight. The adjuster doesnt click into position so it can easily move to other settings by accident and it has a plasticy feel to it. I cant really fault the shave you get and blades seem to last a bit longer but they just seem to have taken a simple thing and complicated it.

Finding the correct angle of the blade to your skin is pretty important, the handle should be angled out, the youtube video a few pages back is worth watching. If you normally shave against the grain i wouldnt do that for a little while. Try it out at night time or when you have some spare time, nothing worse than nicking yourself if your in a hurry to be somewhere.

Everytime I shave my neck/under chin my skin becomes pretty dry and I get a few in-growns etc. I just use a blade and shaving cream.

Any advice?

I got my first DE razor around christmas time, and the difference in the shave compared to when I was just using a Gilette razor is amazing. Will never go back.

I use the MACH 3 as well.

An electric razor is more efficient at shaving off a layer of skin than facial hair.

Has anyone tried the new Schick titanium?

They must cost an arm and a leg.

Electric is for patient shavers with a light touch. Thats the only way to use them.
Once you get used to them it is clean efficient and no cuts. I,ve been electric for 10 years wet shaved for a lifetime but now its the power point for me.

Used an electric razor til I started working at a Bic factory. Ended up with probably 2 years supply of shavers in my cupboard (Comfort 3 Advance and Hybrid). They aren't the best but they were free and should last me into 2013

I dont shave anymore because I look about 10 when I do. I just use a beard trimmer on the lowest setting so I always have a few days stubble going. Used to prefer normal razors to electric back in the day.

This. Though I trim it ultra fine so as not to give a shadow. Even a little bit of stubble can look unprofessional in a suit.

But the difference of trimming vs shaving is massive for me. Wet shaving gives me hell.
