Look, I really rate Nelson, was hoping he'd slip to 32 and draft him there, so I'm stoked we have him, but he's yet to complete a full year - surely there's no rush to sign him?! Barrass and Sheed were and the end of their 2 year contracts and thus expected, so we should expect to here about RoPo, Karps, Main, Newman. Curious to see what happens with Maginness.
Who says we rushed on Nelson? It seems to have been common practice this year that clubs have re-signed promising first year players for a third year. Here are some examples:

I vaguely remember reading an article that suggested first round draft picks should be given automatic 3 year contracts anyway to protect clubs from the go home factor (not that it mattered much in the Boyd case).

Signing up Nelson early seems smart to me, he has shown enough to suggest a third year was guaranteed and now he can just focus on his football. We have locked in a promising and required young player for another year, and probably got him cheaper than if we waited another 12 months when other clubs might have got in his ear. Bring on the Lamb and Duggan extension.

I don't see an issue with extending a first year player's contract at all. It's when we start doing it for players who have reached their ceiling and still aren't much chop that it gets risky

That's ironic, because those three have been giving me extensions all year.

In relation to Sheed and Barrass I would suggest it's because Nelson is an interstater and has played and played well in his first season at AFL level having been a lower draft pick. If he hadn't played or was only on the cusp i don't think we would have pushed for the extra year already but in the current climate of player managers and other clubs doing the dodgy during the season I think it's a smart move.

Brisbane whinges about so many players leaving due to homesickness but SA clubs and in particular Port are notorious for getting in the ear of players during the season and all bar signing them up while they are string contracted to another club.
