Coaching Staff Former Coach James Hird

Do you think Hird should coach Essendon again?

Personally I agree, would love nothing more than Hirdy to return under Woosha with an eye to takeover when John retires. Be fascinated to see how he'd go with a decent apprenticeship under his belt and a clean run at it without a mentor that was passed his used by date.

Imagine the last day in September and Hirdy lifting the cup with a WE ARE ESSENDON chant being belted out by thousands of screaming Essendon fans. Gives me chills.

As much as most of us have forgiven Hirdy for his part in the disastrous
####up that nearly saw the destruction of our great club, I think that ship has sailed long time ago.

Him returning as head coach would divide the fans in opinion and just wouldn’t be a good vibe.

I’m just grateful we have Worsfold steering the ship at the moment and I think he’s going to be there for at least the next five years.

Sheeds has a million ideas. Not all of them are good ones.

I'd like to see him take over from Woosha eventually. Realistically I can't see any other club taking him since the hate for him from non-Essendon fans is still overwhelming (thanks mainly to media bias). However I'm not sure that Xavier etc will ever take him back in an official sense.

Mmmm, interesting one to put out there boncer34 ;)

We are talking about a job where the media scrutiny was so intense that the last time he undertook the role, it almost cost him his life.

I just want him well in body and mind. He owes the club nothing in my opinion.

Clearly tongue in cheek post, however, let me pretend I have ASD and reply seriously. The problem with Hird as a coach is that he is as much an Essendon supporter as any of us. He wont go anywhere else and in this age of prifessionism that is a little weird. Furthermore, a big part of coaching is assuming authority. He went through the wringer last time and after a suicide attempt he clearly has lost the nerve to do so.

Believe in his ability and that he will have learned from his mistakes. But for his sake and the club's, he needs about ten years as an assistant somewhere, anywhere - not Essendon.

I like Sheedy and he’s done plenty for the club and the game in general- but he’s way off the mark on this occasion. I just don’t think after all that’s happened having James as a senior coach at Essendon ever again is a good idea for him or the club. Assistant or specialist at another club - no problem- but not at Essendon after all that has happened

I rated him as a coach and liked his style of play. Will never be back at Essendon in a coaching role but would be great if he got another chance at a club like ST Kilda. Hird would be hell bent on doing things right and redeeming himself. He just needs a club that takes a chance and can ride out the initial backlash and he could be a great get for a team like the Saints.

I know and respect that everyone is just having fun here, but it saddens me to realise that possibly the greatest Essendon player in recent history Can never have the chance to prove himself as a coach. Not everyone gets a second chance, much is the pity.
