Frodo does not exist outside of Tolkien's imagination

I think it is a very good question...don't know the answer as I am not Victorian.

However, I do think that religion is actually at the seat of rivalry in football, not location. Location did not play a part after the early 20th century and location was primarily linked to religion and social standing anyway.

My mother still talks about fights between the catholics and protestants in the 1950's so it was very strong.

I thought Richmond were the cotholics (along with Essendon...not South) ???

But I'm sure Essendon was traditionally a Protestant club. Like Melbourne.

Richmond and Collingwood were staunchly Catholic.

But those sectarian divisions are completely irrelevent ever since the Catholic Church lost its identity as a result of Vatican II and Australians generally stopped giving a stuff about religion. Before that, there was a kind of spiritual apartheid which was felt strongly in football culture.

I blame T.V.

Alf Andrews is correct - Essendon is traditionally a protestant club. The Catholic clubs as far as I know are Collingwood, Richmond and North Melbourne. So to answer the topic - the 3 don't go together.

The leadership of Essendon were tradionally Freemasons. I dont know that this is the case now. We all know the masonic attitude to catholics. Although Ive met Masons who were Catholics.

I hate religion in sports. But how many other coaches do you know the religion off? Also how many times does Sheedy tell is he is a good catholic boy or one of his players is.It would be good to know how many catholics on Essendon's team compared to others.Don't worry i'm not saying it's a recruiting policy.Like Melbourne won't recruit a Jew with Gutnik in charge. But i'm pretty sure Essendon do have the most Italian origin players then any others.Maybe i read into things too much.
