hello all not sure if this subject has been covered but sheedy has brought up an interesting idea about a 3 day cooling off period after the draft so clubs can on trade players they have drafted from interstate back to the a home state afl club for a player from the same draft eg.player x from perth drafted to richmond. player z from victoria drafted to fremantle richmond and fremantle then can trade player x for z if it suits both.
this idea isnt a bad one as far as i can see
cheers

ok ok no1.
richmond select smith from WA in national draft
fremantle select jones from victoria in the draft
now richmond had its eye on jones but fremantle snared him.
unders sheedys plan richmond would talk to fremantle for a possible trade jones to richmond and smith to fremantle.
however that can only trade interstate players for the purpose of the players stay in their HOME state other words richmond couldnt trade smith to anyone bar fremantle or west coast and the same goes for jones fremantle can only trade with a melb based club.
hope this helps ya

The problem with that plan is that presumably Richmond must have wanted Smith to pick him in the first place. If they just pick up Smith as a trade carrot, they would be taking an awful risk because there is every likelihood that the other team won't trade and they are stuck with a player they didn't want. If Richmond had the pick prior to Fremantle in this instance, why didn't they take Jones instead of Smith? If Fremantle had the first pick why did they take Jones when they really wanted Smith?

It would take a monumental stuff up for any team to draft a player that they didn't really want.
