Lions quiet on Akermanis
23 September 2006 Herald-Sun

BRISBANE yesterday refused to discuss the possibility of out-of-favour midfielder Jason Akermanis playing out the last year of his contract with the Lions if a trade to the Western Bulldogs was not agreed on.

Chief executive Michael Bowers said it was club policy not to talk about players' contracts.

And he repeated his earlier stance that the Lions would need to agree to any potential trade.

``To undertake a trade requires at least three parties to agree,'' Bowers said.

``Any further comments are pure speculation until the beginning of trade week (October 9).''

Significantly, Akermanis will sit with other Brownlow medallists at Monday night's count and not with his teammates on the Brisbane table.

Akermanis said on The Footy Show on Thursday night he was only interested in switching to the Dogs and implored other clubs not to bother asking about him.

But Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said he would not be deterred by Aker's comments.

``We will be interested in Akermanis because you never know what might happen,'' Sheedy said in Hobart yesterday.

``He is still on a contract though. If the Western Bulldogs don't offer Brisbane much at all then it is not very good for Akermanis.

``A person trying to make sure he gets where he wants to go is always going to be in that situation where he is trying to convince everybody, `Please let me get there'.''

But Sheedy said the Bombers would not give up a first-round draft pick for Akermanis.

Sheedy is also still keen on discarded West Coast ruckman Michael Gardiner.

``I would think everyone would be interested in Michael Gardiner,'' he said.

``He is 27 and a very good ruckman who has probably overcome his injuries.

``Any club who would be looking at Michael Gardiner would say let's have a look at his medical report, and history tells us if you leave town you get better.

``That is (Barry) Hall, (Tony) Lockett, (Martin) Pike, Mal Michael. When they left their own city they went and played sensational football.

``Somehow it releases them from their local life in footy and they start afresh.

``You would have to say Barry Hall has been an absolute sensation for the AFL in Sydney.''

There is no way in hell that Aker will be playing for essendon next year.
Gardiner is still a decent chance though (dunno why though)

Either he's putting pressure on Laycock to sign or Laycock has already said that he's gone. Well thats what i think.

Yeah well just on the Aker thing, I probably worded it wrongly, but what I really meant is that Aker will only want to play for the Dogs or no one else basically. I know he is under contract still with the Lions, but AFLPA has a clause that says players cannot be traded to clubs where they do not want to go, so it's up to Brisbane to work out a trade with The Bulldogs.
Just with Laycock though, the Bombers are better off keeping him then getting a 27 year old with a history of injuries and a questionable attitude (Gardiner)

There is still a slim chance Aker could make the PSD, as theres no way Brisbane will want him next year and if theres no trade agreed upon well i think he could be headed there. And on Laycock i agree but the risk of getting Gardiner could pay off big time to whoever drafts him.

Don't really have a choice if he want's to leave, although I don't know why anyone want's Gardiner, he simply can't ruck anymore and I'd be very dissapointed if we got him. Ryder will be a top-shelf ruckman soon so it may be a stop-gap solution

Hmm I suppose you make a good point there, but the problem is that it usually takes young ruckman a good 3 or 4 years before they become solid players (IE it took David Hille a few years to come good)
I did want Gardiner intially, but now with his injury problems etc, I don't think he is worth it.
For a young developing club like Carlton (and perhaps to a lesser extent Essendon) Gardiner is probably not worth, however the Saints (if they can get him cheaply) should do a punt with him.

Ryder is a little more developed than the usual ruck project, he'll be seen a lot of in 2008.

I wouldn't even bother if I was St. Kilda, especially if they want a flag, he simply can't ruck anymore, maybe a little around the grounds but not at centre bounces, if they want to try him go for it, he won't last very long, he is essentially a forward for the rest of his career

Brisbane will rather get an early/later draft pick for Aker from the Bulldogs then beign completley petty and refuse Aker's request to go to the Dogs. Having said that, it isn't the Lions fault that Aker is being so stubborn and screwing the club around IMO.
FWIW If he was still around in the PSD, I doubt Carlton will pick him up, he is not the type of player we are after, so you would assume that he would be a Bomber. But I doubt that will happen.
