Lions quiet on Akermanis

BRISBANE yesterday refused to discuss the possibility of out-of-favour midfielder Jason Akermanis playing out the last year of his contract with the Lions if a trade to the Western Bulldogs was not agreed on.

Chief executive Michael Bowers said it was club policy not to talk about players' contracts.
And he repeated his earlier stance that the Lions would need to agree to any potential trade.
``To undertake a trade requires at least three parties to agree,'' Bowers said.
``Any further comments are pure speculation until the beginning of trade week (October 9).''
Significantly, Akermanis will sit with other Brownlow medallists at Monday night's count and not with his teammates on the Brisbane table.
Akermanis said on The Footy Show on Thursday night he was only interested in switching to the Dogs and implored other clubs not to bother asking about him.
But Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said he would not be deterred by Aker's comments.
``We will be interested in Akermanis because you never know what might happen,'' Sheedy said in Hobart yesterday.
``He is still on a contract though. If the Western Bulldogs don't offer Brisbane much at all then it is not very good for Akermanis.
``A person trying to make sure he gets where he wants to go is always going to be in that situation where he is trying to convince everybody, `Please let me get there'.''
But Sheedy said the Bombers would not give up a first-round draft pick for Akermanis.
Sheedy is also still keen on discarded West Coast ruckman Michael Gardiner.
``I would think everyone would be interested in Michael Gardiner,'' he said.
``He is 27 and a very good ruckman who has probably overcome his injuries.
``Any club who would be looking at Michael Gardiner would say let's have a look at his medical report, and history tells us if you leave town you get better.
``That is (Barry) Hall, (Tony) Lockett, (Martin) Pike, Mal Michael. When they left their own city they went and played sensational football.
``Somehow it releases them from their local life in footy and they start afresh.
``You would have to say Barry Hall has been an absolute sensation for the AFL in Sydney.''
