Sheffield Shield Round 5: WA v QLD @ WACA

Didn't make the most of his opportunities at ODI level. Finch has a good ODI record.

He is a comprehensively better batsmen than Bailey or Head...no reason he couldn't bat in the middle order. Even so, he should definitely be in the team before Finch...Usman's main problem is that he isn't 'one of the boys'.

Unless Usman can bowl and field better he isn't thing Head'd place. Head can also belt the ball from ball 1. Bailey is closer but I'd ideally rather someone else, even a Maddinson type (who actually had a great Metrador Cup). Usman's problems are that despite his improvements he's still very ordinary in the field and his running between wickets is pathetic still. You get away with these in test cricket.

Being a Thunder supporter you should know how well King Khawaja can strike a ball so there's no issue there and if fielding was as important as you're making it out to be then Maxwell wouldn't have been carrying the drinks on Sunday.

I'd be more than happy with Maxwell playing for Bailey actually. In ODI cricket you need to be great in the field. You can't hide useless fielders in ODI or T20 cricket.

Khawaja can strike the ball, but I doubt he can coming in at 5 or 6 where Head is, and Smith is a gun number 3 in limited overs cricket, probably 2nd behind Kholi!

Usman can find the boundary but he still can't turn 1s into 2s, 2s into 3s with his running between wickets. It doesn't matter as much in T20 when you need to hit boundaries, it gets exposed in ODI. T20 its not uncommon to have 50%+ of your runs in boundaries which just doesn't happen in ODIs.

Turner getting his act together, at least one thing from this season. If Mackin keeps some form that'll be two things.

Season to date figures below showing where they rank league wide. As mentioned, Turner and Cartwright have been impressive with the bat and Agar has done about as much as you could hope for with the ball (in some trying conditions outside of Sydney). The rest are rubbish. Bolded players are those who are injured or likely to spend considerable time in the Australian squad.

Batsmen
1st: Turner - 429 runs at 71.50 (2 x 100, 1 x 50)
11th: Cartwright - 330 runs at 36.66 (3 x 50)
18th: Wells - 254 runs at 36.28 (1 x 100)
25th: Klinger - 235 runs at 26.11 (3 x 50)
26th: Whiteman - 230 runs at 25.55 (1 x 100, 1 x 50)
29th: Bancroft - 216 runs at 24.00 (1 x 100)
35th: S.Marsh - 183 runs at 91.50 (1 x 100, 1 x 50)
46th: Agar - 115 runs at 19.16

Bowlers
6th: Agar - 16 wickets at 26.62
9th: Behrendorff - 14 wickets at 23.14
16th: Mackin - 10 wickets at 35.90
22nd: M.Marsh - 8 wickets at 27.75
35th: Moody - 5 wickets at 76.20
43rd: Nicholas - 2 wickets at 48.50
44th: Short - 2 wickets at 57.50
46th: Cartwright - 2 wickets at 130.50

No Coulter-Nile, Paris, Behrendorff and Tye. No wonder our bowling is struggling. The bats are just under performing - Klinger, Whiteman and Bancroft primarily.

Great to see Queensland doing well - hopefully they can close this one out and give themselves a solid post Christmas series. Vics & NSW are the teams to beat but the Bulls have a tendency to time their run in the back half of the season. Lot will depend on how the bowlers stand up, although they have reasonable depth at the moment.
