Mike Shehan's No 1 Player is Wayne Carey. It has been for a few years. It might well be warranted but Shehan really loves him doesn't he ?

Carey is 29 so even Mike will have to drop him someday (though it doesn't look likely)

Can anyone predict who (and when) will dethrone Carey in Mikes eyes ? It'll probably be a forward (I base that on the fact that he picked Dunstall for a couple of years running)

My candidates from Hawthorn would be Thompson, Croad or Crawford. But I must admit Matty Lloyd looks good at this stage, probably as late as 2004 if Carey keeps going (possibly at FF by then)

Remember you need to predict Mike Shehan's mind (scary thought) not who you think it should be

Has the whole list actually been published, or just the top few?
If it's the entire list can someone post a link to it please? I've looked for it, but with no success....

Thanks.

Actually, it's his list of who he *thinks* will be the dominant player in the comp. He does another at the end of the year taking form and injury in to consideration and Carey has been bumped off in this a time or two IIRC.

My nominations?

Voss
Lloyd
Cousins

Current prospects:

Buckley (best player in my view)
Lloyd
Cousins (gun)
Mercuri
Kouta
Wild cards: Voss & Hird (if they can stay healthy)

Possibles in next 2-3 years:

Nathan Thompson
Chris Tarrant (2-3 years)

I'm a Collingwood supporter and I don't think Buckley is the best player in the competition. As far as I'm concerned it is Wayne Carey comfortably. There is no player who can influence a game like Carey. Buckley might be the most naturally talented player but he isn't as effective as Carey.

As for Tarrant, he has the skill and the class to become a top player, but I'm not so sure his heart is in it. He seems to be a very lazy footballer.

Buckly #1???? Number 1 overrated player maybe!

Youve got to be kidding - he kicks a mile, but does he ever hit a target?? He is like Bradley, shuts his eyes when he kicks.

Also, has Buckly (or bradley for that matter) ever gone near a hard ball? I cant recall either of them going close.

Carey is #1 by a mile, no doubt. Hird(when fit), Crawf, Harvy etc are all top players, but a level below Carey IMO.

Carey by a mile, he turns football teams ontheir head, no other player in the league gets 4 opponents every week. Thats at once.

The question is:

When will carey be replaced (and by who) as No1 in Mike Shehan's Eyes

I hate to dissapoint you Carey fans, but it will happen.

He is the best running around, but by no shape or form is he the best ever.

By his own admission (earlier this year) he said he aspired to be as great as Brereton, for example. So don't take my word for it, take his.

Depends how u look at it (also, as if HE is going to say he is the best ever - duh!)

For pure talent, he is the best ever. THe game is at its fastest and best right now, and he is easily the best.

But, its all relative, today they having better training facilities, more info re weights, training, computers etc.

But, I cant recall anyone dominating the comp the way Carey does. He has copped 4 on him for the -past 4-5 years and is STILL easily the best.

If he isnt the best ever, he is very close.
(and I hate him, gee he always seems to kill us, except for last week of course)

While I disagree, I think there is clearly only one candidate to dethrone Carey in Mike Sheahan's eyes.

The commentators have already started practicing kissing his arse and overrating him, just like they do Carey.

That player - Matthew Richardson.

Almost as overrated as Carey

Since you're all discussing him, any thoughts on who to play on Carey tonight? I don't know if the Jako-Carey matchup will ever be as good again, particularly as KJ (in all his wisdom!) has decided on giving Jako a run up forward. McIntosh? He has bad knees so should only play full-back, not HB.
Glass has looked good during our miserable pre-season, but KJ has decided to not to play him. (He has 1 or 2 years of top level Westar under his belt so he's not exactly inexperienced...) Any thoughts? Seems as though most of you love Carey to be beaten.
Bit of good news though, didn't he say he was definately retiring at 31? Two years to go!

Jako or Glass - you're right about AM - plus he's not match fit. Should be good game with North's forward line missing Scholl and Welsh (Crows).

Just clarifying my list earlier - it was in answer to a question - who's next to replace Carey? - clearly Carey (except in GF's) is the best going round. But with the exception of Buckley and Voss (if fit) the next three three best are at Essendon in Lloyd, Hird (if he stays fit) and Mercuri.

Dutchy dont get to carried away with your depth of talent! While I agree with you that on the level below Carey, Lloyd is the mane guy looking to be the best in the game. Hirdy was always (great player that he is as a given)below him and now would rate at his best alongside Buckley/Voss/Harvey and I rekon he will now be playing a very similar ,ie running type game as them.
Mercuri is all class but there are at least 10/12 players all around his ability in the game today.

Guess I'm a bit biased Grendel but I can't go with you on Mercuri. Crawford is a player as it Harvey but its pretty hard to stand out in a very strong team - something that Mercuri now does regularly - the fact that he came so close to a Brownlow with so many guys taking votes of him was a grat effort too.

Point taken though, its just my opinion and I've very biased.

I think that Carey will flounder this year. he is rattled, the umpires have shown they will not tolerate his tactics, by reporting him. Once he was reported, he played like a crap.He is not a big game player, seems to be asleep for them.
Also I think that Voss or Hird are the next big thing.
Voss in any match is a star, but last year he played with a huge rod in his leg, and played better than the majority of other players on the field. As for Hird his comeback matches show what he is made of.
Maybe another joint Brownlow this year eh.

I agree with most other peoples opinions that Carey is the best in the competition. He also takes on the responsibility of Captain very well and is a great role model for all other North players.
Players to take over from the King in the next 2-3 years:
Definatly Michael Voss if he stays fit.
Matthew Lloyd
Andrew McLeod
(Buckley, Mercuri, Scwartz are overrated)
(Sure Mercuri got close to the Brownlow but Schwass did nearly every year and he was by no means the best in the comp. Umpires opinions means jack squat)

Future:
Brad Ottens from Richmond could be anything, but so could have that backman/nightclubber been that Richmond got from Collingwood. Forgotten his name. Ottens I think will be far better than Richardson.
Trent Croad
Byron Pickett (Next Michael Long and possibly more (aggression wise)
Scott Welsh (I cant believe North got rid of him)
Wirrapunda looks pretty good.

I like Ottens as a player though, he has the most potential as a Carey type player. Tough call on Lloyd but I see Lloyd as more of a lead and mark player rather than using sheer brut strength that Carey and possibly Ottens will use in a couple of years. The comparisons between Carey at the beginning and Ottens arent too dis-similar. Carey ahead of cause but not by much.

Pete

North did not want Scott Welsh to leave. But Welsh wanted to go back home to Adelaide for family reasons, and so, he and the club came to the agreement that when Welsh's contract expired, the club would do everything they could to arrange a transfer to either one of the Adelaide clubs.

The kid has heaps of potential, so we're sad to see him leave. But I hope he does well in his career with Adelaide.

Carey didn't look too hot tonight! I know it's too early to say that Jak's Back, but it can only be good for the game if their rivalry could be like in the mid '90's.

I can't believe we won tonight! I know it's only one game, but to beat them over there for the first time since '94 is a pretty good sign. But it's vital we stay fit. Kemp, Banfield, Cousins, Matera, McKenna & McIntosh are all going to have to be managed well if a repeat of last year is to be avoided.

Agree in my opinion Carey's benn elevated as a great, he's playing in a period without great centre/ half backs like Van der Haar, Mew etc. Everytime I see him play on Jakovich he cops a pasting.

Well Don,

This may not be an era of the great centre half backs, but nonetheless, Carey usually has to contend with two or more defenders whenever he plays.

The only player that can consistently beat him one on one is Glen Jakovich. When both players have been fully fit, I can only recall one time when Carey has beaten Jakovich. But to my mind, Jakovich has clearly been the best centre half back in the competition in the past ten years. Both players are two legends of the game.
