Sherman leaves Brisbane

If we got a second round pick for Sherman and didn’t have to pay his salary that would be a great result.

A common thread in all the players that are being rumoured as gone/traded are that none of them would be classed as having good (let alone great) skills or football nous.

Hopefully, this is a continuing trend and we look to draft players with football brains to see opportunities and the skills to execute what they see.

Not all that shocked/disappointed, but thanks Shermo for perhaps one of my top 10 lions memories - namely, popping one through on the run and raising his arms in a victory celebration, nicely timed with an F1-11 doing a dump and burn over the gabba as Riverfire was on the same night.

I will never forget that moment, but for the life of me can't remember who we were playing...

He also gives me one of my worst Lion memories - the 1 pt loss to Melbourne (wooden spooners at the time) - when he was running into goal and got run down by a hack demon ruckman.

Good riddance to this prick imho.

Not too bad news, we dont really need downhill skiers in a young team like ours over the next few years.
Like TBD im excited about all these draft picks

We should send Sherno to Carlton as they have a full deck of downhill skiers? It is quite ironic three years ago Brisbane were relying on Brennan, Sherman and Riska to take Brisbane back up the ladder after our earlt 2000s success but all really failed to deliver and now they are out when it gets tough and chasing coin.
I think Brisbane will be far better off with the 5 draft picks and our list will be more balanced in the years ahead. There will be some very short pain to get through.

This one doesn't hurt, at all. Had a poor year and can't seem him being more than a flash in the pan type player. Another with poor disposal skills, and again that's where we were so poor this year. Good luck to him in the future, but we're better off freeing up the cap space and drafting for the future.

A 2nd rounder plus the other club picking up his salary would usually be more than adequate compensation for Sherman but we have blasted a gigantic hole in our 24-28 year old demographic this year.

This loss of "prime-aged" players + Black and Power on their last legs (not derogatory) + contracted spuds like Raines, Buchanan, Charman, Stiller + an influx of teenagers will make the '11 Lions the weakest list we have ever had.

I'm usually against a team "rebuilding" - particularly as we can't afford the 2-3 years it takes at the bottom of the pile to do it properly, but we now have no other choice.

It's a bit concerning we have all these mid-range draft picks in a year not especially packed with outstanding young talent (by most reports). I hope we keep that Rischitelli compo pick for down the track.

Gubby Allen and Michael Voss along with a couple of others have created this mess. It worries me that Voss is on his last year of his contract needing to improve the side with all these tasty draft picks floating about. If he goes after recycled scum again this year on a SuperCoach trading spree to save face it will be the final straw for me.

Also hasn't the board said somewhere that Voss and co have been given free reign to recruit young talent ie they are not going to be allowed to recruit mature players without approval.

Any trade of Sherman must include Collins in the package. I am sure Shermo would be impressed with that ;)

Que sera sera. :/

Looks like we will get some major salary cap relief and pick 30 from Richmond in exchange.

Geez we're going to have some earlyish picks in this draft.

Assuming that the Sherman deal goes through, and we get say, pick 13 for Brennan, we would likely have...

Pick 10 (our original pick)
Pick 13 (Brennan)
Pick 27 (Rischa comp)
Pick 30 (Sherman)
Pick 31 (our second pick)

That is a lot of early picks. Hope Vossy doesn't start think about trading them. ;)

A lot of draft picks this year. We would be better to hold off on the Rischitelli compensatory draft pick in that case.

Also, isn't this years draft significantly weaker as the Gold Coast were able to take 9 (not sure on this figure) underage players (who would be in this years draft) last year?

Seems a crap year to be "rebuilding".

I see this indirectly a condemnation of our drafting over about a five year stretch. No focus on skills, no focus on football, no focus on ability to get the ball, instead we got "character" (Rischitelli, Adcock), "flair" (Brennan, Sherman) and "Queenslanders" (Mills, Proud, Hooper).

Yes and no. There's more depth here than last year (or so it appears based off my analysis of other posters' comments), but GC took 11 of the best born between Jan and Apr (of which three to five would have been first rounders, and the same again second rounders) and have another nine first round picks. Out of what's left, the picks to around 30 seem to be solid but it tails off rapidly after that. So it's definitely not the best year, but there have also been worse years.

Given what Hadley's unearthed deep into the draft in 2 years it is a fair indictment of the previous recruiting regime, isn't it?

Sherman to Sydney for Veszpremi and a second rounder please :thumbsu:. Patrick Veszpremi is a good young player who has been on the outer at the Swans this season.
As the old man in The Castle said, Tell him he's dreamin'. Vez and a second rounder is paying way over, given that you guys are up shit creek with your salary cap, and by most people's admission on this board, Sherman has struggled this year. True, Veszpremi is on the outer, but he has a year to run on his contract and a new coach to impress. I reckon he might stay...

Alongside Brennan with the most frustrating players to follow/watch. I am actually glad to see Sherman go, hopefully he can get his head sorted at another club.

What worries me about this is we need 25 to 27 year old players in a couple of years time, regardless of what happens with drafting and Fev, losing these players makes the hole for these age players bigger over the next few years.

In a word: Yes. Definitely an annoyance of mine, and IMO also responsible for where we're at now. An argument can be made that if we'd drafted better we (a) wouldn't have needed to import players last year and (b) wouldn't have paid over the odds to secure our best up-and-comers even though they all realistically have large flaws in their game, hence reducing our salary cap pressure.

Not too upset again. Rischa has hurt more than 5 Brennan's or Sherman's would and even that wasn't too bad. We're in the best position to get rid of these kind of players and we can always use more draft picks.

To be honest I wouldn't mind having a whole bunch of youth running around next year with Brown/Black/Power to support them. It'll be a bit of a rough year next year but I still don't think we'll get the spoon and might surprise a few people who will surely be writing us off without knowing that players like Brennan/Sherman are downhill skiers who haven't lived up to their potential.

I always liked Sherman but this season turned me off him. Would definitely follow him at Richmond or Sydney though, both clubs I enjoy watching and I think he would do well at.

Reaaaaally hope Clarke can shake off injury next year, we'll need him (27), Goose (26), Staker (26) and Drummond (27) up and about to add some experience around the ground. Also because I always loved X Clarke at the Saints and think if he could string a few games together it'd shut up a lot of naysayers.

Praying that Vossy has learned his lesson and goes youth heavy and that any trades are for promising young players instead of mid 20's fringe players like Buchanan and Raines.

Warwick,

I'm lead to believe that this is a high quality draft, but lacks a little depth due to all the 17 year olds pinched last year.

Having 4 or 5 picks in the first 35 would be a fantastic result for Brisbane, especially in a draft seen to be 'compromised'.

You would think you would hold onto the Risca pick for another year if you pick up first and 2nd rounders for Brennan and Sherman.

Bloody hell ... we are redefining basket case. So we have JB at CHF ( definately ) and LBerger in the square with Richie Rich and a couple of red heads. Anyone else who is both good enough AND definately staying ?

I think you've hit on Voss's plan! Make everybody else leave, then he can make a stunning comeback!

Pick 13 (Brennan)
Pick 27 (Rischa comp)
Pick 30 (Sherman)

I would rather have the players

Thanks for that.

Its certainly disheartening knowing we "topped up" last year so we could compete for a flag with Brown, Black & Power still around and while the next few drafts are compromised but what has happened is exactly what we were trying to avoid.
