One of the most unusual cases I've ever seen.
Nearly a year after Sherri Papini vanished while jogging near her home, investigators are still working to understand what happened to the California woman during her time in captivity.
Papini's 22 days long disappearance and eventual discovery on the side of a local highway mostly remains a mystery. Authorities on Wednesday shared additional details in her abduction, but the new information only seemed to add questions rather than offer any clarity.
No arrests have been made in the kidnapping, but the FBI this week released sketches of two female suspects in the case.
The day of the disappearance
The mother of two picked up her cellphone and ear buds before heading out for a jog in her Redding neighborhood — sometime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Nov. 2, 2016.
Her husband Keith Papini returned home from work before 6 p.m. to an empty home. He soon learned his wife didn't pick up their children, ages 2 and 4, from day care, prompting immediate concern.
With the help of an iPhone tracker app, Keith was able to locate Papini's phone, earbuds and several strands of hair about a mile away from their home.
He reported his wife missing and the Shasta County Sheriff's Office advertised a $50,000 reward leading for information leading to her whereabouts.
The Search
Police on Nov. 7 brought Keith in for questioning and confirmed his whereabouts the day his wife went missing. Authorities said there was no evidence to connect him to the abduction.
A few days later, he made an emotional appearance on "Good Morning America," where he said his wife "was definitely taken against her will."
By Nov. 8, authorities netted 150 tips in the case, Capt. John Hubbard told the Los Angeles Times.
And in the following weeks, authorities filed more than 20 search warrants
The Discovery
Alison Sutton, 43, was driving north on Interstate 5 near County Road 17 early Thanksgiving morning when she spotted Papini — her wrists and waist chained — on the side of the road.
Here's some CCTV caught when she was released:
Her long blond hair had been "chopped" off, she was "emaciated" and covered in "multicolored bruises, severe burns, red rashes and chain markings," Keith wrote in a statement following their reunion. Her captors also branded her.
Papini told authorities she was abducted by two hispanic women — one with straight hair, one with curly — but noted they either wore masks or covered her head with a pillowcase.
. Both Sherri and her husband have passed a lie detector test
. DNA of a man and a woman was found on Sherri's clothes. None of the DNA belongs to her husband.
When Sherri's family started to think the police were dragging their feet they tried something different. They raised a reverse ransom on the advice of an ex military man with a long resume training military and civilian experts – including teams of Navy Seals – in captivity, escape and interrogation technique. He posted a video offering the money which had an expiry. 115 hours. It went viral.
When nobody called to claim the ransom, another video was posted and he upped the ante offering a six figure bounty. “I told the captors the whole world was watching,” he said. “I wanted them to feel they were being hunted, that the money we were offering was so enticing they couldn’t trust their own mother not to betray them.”
The Sheriff's Department went ballistic. These people won't play by the rules.
But coincidence or not, Sherri was released the next day. She heard a gunshot and was then bundled into an SUV by the younger abductor.
