This worry me a little that we win most of our games in Shoot-Out Fashion by us kicking 20+ Goals but they kick around the 15 Goal mark.

Can we win in September like this or even can we beat the Cats that way as they have the better midfield?

Really are still adjusting to our zone. Even as fans we aren't yet used to this attacking style

We need to tighten up Defense but pleasingly we never look flustered by a run on

The objective is to have the higher score by the final siren. The current plan is getting that done, why not stick with it? I agree that the defense is letting a few more through than we're used to, but I think that's just a side effect of the zone we're employing. Is it possible to have scores of 130+ every week and still restrict the opposition to 60 or less? Probably not, we're not that good. But our offensive strength is looking very formddable right now, especially when you consider the forward line had the big ? over it in the preseason.

You only had to listen to Heath Shaw and Luke Ball after the match, basically saying that defence is still at the forefront of the game plan so I wouldn't worry too much. That's why MM wasn't that pleased after the Kanga's game. It's a work in progress to get the balance right.

And to your OP Dave, I don't think it's that much of a problem, if you watch our games, the reason the other teams have scored 15 goals, is because we take the foot off the pedal with about 6-7 minutes to go and they get junk time goals.
In none of our wins (except the Melbourne one) so far this year have we been in danger of losing the game with 6-7 minutes left.

Surely when Presti comes back we will be tighter. Although it wouldn't have helped much last night.. but games against Carlton where O'pindick got 5 goals, Presti probably would have held him to 1-2

The main reason we are leaking is because we push so many numbers forward, which is also the reason we score so high... Freo were trying to do the same thing, but it backfired.. we scored 5-6 goals from free players in the goal square.

Another thing is, last night, we were 50 odd points up before we took the foot off the throttle and they kicked the last 3 goals to bring then from 70 something to 90 something.. So I'd say defensively we were very good on the night.

Back to Dave's problem with us conceding high scores, it can easily be tracked back to the young back line we have.

Last night our backline consisted of;

Nathan Brown = 41 games, 21 years old
Alan Toovey = 49 games, 23 years old
Ben Reid = 13 games, 21 years old
Harry O'Brien = 93 games, 24 yo
Nick Maxwell = 126 games, 26 yo
Heath Shaw = 99 games, 25yo

What I'm getting at here is without Presti as the "reliable old key defender" back there, we are starting to develop a new backline. Every week they make errors, which cost us goals, but every week, those errors get to be less in both quantity and cost.

I believe MM knows exactly what he is doing at the moment, allowing the likes of Reid, Brown, Toovey etc to get more games under their belt, so when it comes finals time, we have a varied choice of players who will be selected based on matchups.

I'm not too concerned, we let Freo kick the last 3 goals of the game last night, so 12 goals conceded wouldn't have been too bad against the top interstate side on their home ground.

Our defense is still developing, and will only get better, and we need to develop it, because Presti won't be around for too much longer.

We will "tighten up" as the finals approach, dont worry (be happy:D).

It is a non issue imo. After 8 rounds we are conceding 81 points per game on average. We have played 1 more game than 14 other sides as of this morning yet have had less scored against us than 9 of those 14. I would expect after the weekend we will be ranked in the top 6 for points conceded, possibly top 4.

This.

We're still relatively new to zoning. Added to the fact we've probably conceded a few cheap goals when our games have been all but over.

The boys will keep improving as the year goes on. We all know we're capable of playing the dour, low scoring footy. But it fell apart against the top sides.

I think that we need to really look at the easy goals that we're conceding, because the really good teams (such as Geelong), will really hurt us with them. That said, it's hard to argue against winning form!
