I really hope we recruit a tall defender. As good as leo and craig are, they do tend to struggle against the bigger forwards. Imagine how solid our backline would be if we had the likes of a darren glass or a tom harley or a ben rutten.

A lot has been said about our dysfunctional forward line, and our blue collar midfield, but IMO our backline gives me the most concern.

What is at the top of your list?

1. Tall Defender. Doesn't necessarily have to be a great KPP but just someone to take the heat off Leo, LRT and Bolts.

2. Young KP Forward to develop into our next CHF/FF

3. Pacey/Classy Midfielder to compliment our in and unders

Agree with your suggestions:thumbsu:

Don't we have players in the seconds who could fill some of these positions provided they were given game time; eg Jarrad Moore, Laidlaw, Grundy, Barlow?

Of the guys who are on the outs with their clubs, I'd say Ken McGregor would be a handy option on the power forwards, can also play forward and pinch-hit as a ruckman. Adelaide would probably ask a lot in trade though.
I've always rated Leigh Brown from the Kangas, their fans seem to hate him though and he can't get a game at the moment. He's never really lived up to his potential, if you could get him reasonably fit he would be a good cheaper option.
If they're serious about giving this group one last real crack they'll need a ready made big-bodied defender for sure. Luv Humph.

I like yor Leigh Brown idea. He has been in and out the the team quite a bit in the latter part of the season and he could be what we are looking for at CHB. He played that position for the Dockers. A key defender is definately a must.

We need some leg speed in the midfield. Would love to see Moore get a consistant run there next season. Not sure if we need to trade for this though.

We are in desperate need of a 3rd ruckman. If Jolly or Spider go down, we are in strife! Doyle just not up to it.

we certainly need a big key defender, but not sure about either brown or mcgregor, seeing as both have been on the outer at their clubs for most of this season....i used to rate brown but he's never kicked on, maybe we could get the best out of him, he's not too old....and i certainly agree our defence is the biggest worry, although i have faith in LRT, i still think he has time on his side and the potential to develop into a long-term CHB, and with c bolton alongside, we just need another big body....
jamie grayham at the weagles is tall, not sure if he's sturdy enough but he might be worth a crack, although he seemed to be played as a utility type player in 06, all over the place....
i'm not too worried about our forwards as long as grundy is groomed for a forward role and nowhere else, and we still have our guns as long as they can get fit....ROK can be used more as a marking forward option if we develop some of our younger mids and get kennelly back partnering malch off halfback....we DO need a running midfielder though, with a touch of class, say a cam bruce type

How many tall defenders are floating around these days? I'm just curious who you had your eye on.

I think every team bar Geelong need another tall defender. But the way the game is being played, they are a dying breed.

Ben rutten , Nathan Bok, Darren Glass, Chad Cornes
James Clement, Scarlett, Harley,Merett are the sort of players that may provide our backline with stability.

I'm also open to smaller defenders like the Burgoyne Brothers whom have exquisite footskills and good decision making

I would imagine if the Swans wanted too they could convince one of those players clubs to trade one of them.

Would not go anywhere: Rutten, Glass, Cornes, Clement, Scarlett, Harley, Merrett.

The only one of that list that would even have a chance of moving would be Bock. Maguire could be a chance though.

The fact is, there just aren't any expendable tall defenders around atm. At least 6 teams have mentioned they need a tall back, and most teams only have 1 or 2 genuine big blokes. They are as rare as hen's teeth.

Dont know if you are aware of this, but we are trying to re-build the team for the
future ! Not start up a nursing home for all the older players from other clubs!
if there weren't any other options, then we have to look at the older players. Mind you some of the older players can still be of value for a couple of years.

i just can't see our current backline withstand quality opposition.

for arguments sake,

Malceski and kennelly, provides run and does not play on a forward as such

Bolton, probly needs another year in the gym

Barry, gives up too much in height

Bevan, decision making is very ordinary

LRT, love the guy but still cringe when he has ball in hands

I reckon Chicky will retire if he won't get another shot with the Eagles. He did move to them from Hawthron initially for the "Go Home Factor."

LRT supported by Barry, Bolton, Kennelly and Malceski can hold down CHB. It's FB that is the problem. They could chase Maguire but L.Brown, McGregor, and Graham can't get a game at their own clubs. Why would we want them? We're only trading for 2008 because after that we have to draft very good young players -KP back and front and fast MFF for the next 10 years. They seem to think Grundy will make it but which midfielders are given the pat is anyone's guess.

It'll only be a matter of time before the AFL follows every other major professional team sport in the world, where there is a trade system in place. That is, the trade period is all about getting "stars" and you trade your stars to get them. Sooner or later, there will be a breakthrough trade deal that will make it all happen. For example, the Swans will trade Goodes and Malceski to get Cox and Priddis. Sounds unimaginable because it's all so conservative right now - but really there is no reason to think deals like this won't happen.

So my shopping list would include Cox, Egan, Hodge and Franklin.

Would Aaron Davey be of any interest to us? Would give us alot of pep and could play midfield/HF.

Cost would be an issue but boy it would be good to have some whippet pace in our team with amazing skill.
