Would Aaron Davey be of any interest to us? Would give us alot of pep and could play midfield/HF.

Cost would be an issue but boy it would be good to have some whippet pace in our team with amazing skill.

Magical player but he had a pretty poor seaon in 2007.
If we want to inject pace into our midfield then the sort of players that I would want to recruit include:

1. Danyle Pearce
2. Wojinski
3. Aaron or Alwyn Davey
4. Andrew Lovett

For me, I'm actually not really worried about our backline. I have faith in LRT holding down the CHB spot and C.Bolton taking the other tall - he covered quite a few small/medium forwards in 2005 (e.g. he held Farmer goal-less) but I see him playing full-time on the big bodies (like he've done all year), especially in the current times when the monster power forwards are getting endangered - all the big bodies tends to be playing more as leading forwards rather than the wrestling plugger/alistair lynch era.

The only times that Bolton had ready struggled was against the super-quick leading forwards (e.g. Rusling) but otherwise he had a great year. With Leo, I'm much more incline in putting him as a loose man (when we play a loose man) or taking the third tall. Dempster, Richards will take the other talls with Luke Brennan as cover if he's promoted (he got a lot of stick for his poor performance against Rusling - but if Bolton can't keep him in check, there's probably very few people that could on his good day). I really don't mind 'under-sized' full backs as the full forwards these days tend to be smaller with the bigger bodies moved to more CHF/Hybrid spots (Cameron Cloke and Ashley Hansen are good examples).

What we do need, however, is a KPP-type on the front line that is a reliable mark. We are an amazingly bad over-head marking team - our best is probably Ryan O'Keefe and as great as he is, he shouldn't be the main marking target up front. Big Barry Hall, for all his size, is a better leading mark than a over-head/contested mark, especially with the new hands-in-the-back rule and his tendency to drop marks. With Magic coming to the end of his career, we really need to find reliable options in our front line. The new rules favours the faster/high jumping forwards (e.g. Westhoff) as oppose to power forwards and that's probably what we should draft/trade for.

But there's not really a lot of these types that we should go for in this year's market (e.g. mcgregor is definitely not someone we should go for), so I suggest we actually don't shop around this year and instead looking for such a type in the draft (or hoping the likes of Grundy and Jesse White to stand up) and see what the market will be like at the end of next year (We might be able to nick someone useful from Geelong due to a lot of players over-performing this year and with Salary-cap tightening).

What about Sampi? I'm sure we could do a 'nice' deal with the weagles, they wouldn't ask for too much!

Sampi is even more lazier than Davis, thats why he was dropped for much of this season. I think he also has a drinking problem.

plus I think we have good small forwards in sneider and davis already

I think the Swans management should pay close attention to the Judd situation. Whichever team picks him up will have a very tight salary cap and will most likely want to offload a player or 2. This could be the Swans chance to pounce.

I think the front runners for his signature are pies, dees, blues and bombers.

If Buckley retires then this will free up a lot of equity for the pies
Also given that Hird has retired, and Blues would want to trade Fev, then most of the front runners for Judd are perhaps not in the predicament that we would like them to be.

Maybe so but i get the feeling that Buckley will go on for 1 more season. There are a couple of young Pies players who i would really like to see in the Red and the White.

Yeh, I quite fancy Pendlebury, Didak, and Shaw. But I think Dale Thomas is a couple of years away from being the player that the media portrays him to be

Please forgive my ignorance, but what did chick do to bring about your disapproval

pole-axed nick malceski in the 06 1st final, from memory, that was one thing that stands out....pretty sure that was chick, and the commentators were saying what a good, tough act it was...malceski was looking at and going for the ball, chick was going for malch
he's juts a niggly prck, like hunter

LRT supported by Barry, Bolton, Kennelly and Malceski can hold down CHB. It's FB that is the problem. They could chase Maguire but L.Brown, McGregor, and Graham can't get a game at their own clubs. Why would we want them? We're only trading for 2008 because after that we have to draft very good young players -KP back and front and fast MFF for the next 10 years. They seem to think Grundy will make it but which midfielders are given the pat is anyone's guess.

Craig Bolton (Lions), Darren Jolly (Dees), and Ted Richards (Bombers) are three players that we have traded for from opposition clubs. All three players found it hard to get regular games at their respective clbs. Andrew Ireland and the recuruting staff have a great eye for identiying these types of players. No one is going to give up a Darren Glass or a Ben Rutten. If we are after a key defender we have to do our homework.

Of the above mentioned players, I cant see St.Kilda letting Maguire go, Leigh Brown could be a chance, whilst Graham recently signed a new 2 year deal and cannot be traded (new rule in place which restricts the trading of any player that has just signed a new contract).

i suspect buckley will play on, unless the pies win the flag
i just think he will feel totally unsatisfied by a "final year" that totals 4-5 games
carlton won't trade fev, unless fev asks to go

they're coming from a long way back but don't discount the dees

but there's definitely a big ripple effect to come from whatever the judd deal is....

Dawes has been injured for most of the season but had a reputation in Under 18's and I also liked the look of Reid. But are they available?

I think we need to bite the bullet as far as trades go for the future. The fact is we have alot of very similar "medium" size players at the club, that while all are good players, I dont think they are going to take us to our next grand final. I have thought about some "possible" trade senerios that I would like others opinion on, they are:
  • Jarrod McVeigh to Essendon for Kepler Bradley. I really like McVeigh, but we have alot of similar players coming thru (Laidlaw, Thornton, Brabazon etc), while Bradley I think is much maligned, hes big, young, and IMO would be a good fullback. (Besides he was a sydney fan and Jarrod could play with Mark)
  • Amon Buchanan to Geelong for Brent Prismall and Charlie Gardener. Buchanan is a star, but Prismall I see as a perfect replacement for Kirky while Gardiner can give us what we dont have alot of in our forwards, the "X-factor", he can play and only needs regular oppurtunities.
  • Nic Fosdike to Adelaide for Ken McGregor. Fossie is a great player, but as above, we have alot of similar guys already. Adelaide want midfielders, fossie is an ex-pat, Mcgregor can cover CHF/CHB at a pinch and he is only 25.
Dont get me wrong, I think all 3 guys have done sydney proud, but maybe we need to make "sacrifices" to move the club forward.

Reading stuff like that makes me feel more than slightly queasy. Bradley and Gardiner (especially) are duds of the highest order. McGregor is one dimensional and inconsistent. Forgetting about who we'd be losing under that scenario (Monty's one of my favourites and in 2005-6 was probably in the top 5 best performed players at the club - no reason to think he can't get back to that form after suffering lots of niggling injuries this year), taking up three list spots with those players would be depressing indeed.
